I read it and did all the exercises. It's just that the book was all about drawing from reality and references. The OP pic was drawing from imagination without references. I plan on doing keys next.

The fun crazy shit about using references and reality is that you /learn/ to draw from imagination. If you don't know shit about how to draw anything, you're going to draw shit from your imagination.

What you're basically telling me is that you did all the exercises but you retained fuckall from it.
The exercises aren't just 'one time boom you're done' things. You're supposed to /practice/. Until you /learn/. Which means your brain /remembers/. So then you can draw from your /imagination/

I know all this and am also drawing from reality. But I didn't know I'm supposed to put off drawing from imagination alltogether until I get better at drawing from reality. Also, obviously when I draw from imagination it doesn't come from nowhere. The eyes I draw aren't inspired by anime or anything but by real life femme fatale make up.

Here's what you're not understanding WRT Right Side of the Brain and what you're supposed to get from drawing from reference and life drawing:

You don't know what real life looks like.

Read that sentence like 4 more times. I'm serious. Then go reread what Right Side has to say about Symbol Drawing and what the brain does when it comes to relating the world to you through your eyes.

Symbol drawing isn't just a lack of experience and defaulting to drawing something like a flower as a line, circle, and 4-5 arcs connected to the circle because of it. If you symbol draw, that IS what your brain sees a flower as. Your brain literally defaults the real world to basic shapes in your memory that just get hazily filled in when recalled.

Life drawing and drawing from reference is what gives you the tools you need to actually make your brain stop storing images as shortcut style basic symbols. You will never draw a decent picture purely from memory until you can accurately draw from reference and life. You literally do not know what the human body looks like yet.

That's not to say you can't try drawing from memory/imagination until you can photo-reproduce a scene from in front of you, and in fact you should practice it. But don't try and fool yourself into thinking you'll be progressing at all.

Drawing from imagination without learning and grinding the fundamentals is like trying to make a house before finishing all your civil engineering courses (architecture is a bullshit art). You can go ahead and do it, but the result is not going to be functionally nor structurally sound.
