Spending time to add hyper realism would only take away from the focus of the piece and would waste too much time. If he did add more detail, I could argue that it would be worse.

That is the difference between a pro and some kid studying art from their local shit tier public college. You don't need to make every little inch look hyper realistic. It wastes time and actually looks pretty fake and amateur. Even with your eyesight, you arent looking at everything with 100% detail. You have a focal point that you can pick apart and understand but everything else is just a representation of what it is until you focus on it.
