When artists draws well without looking at a photograph, you might think he's drawing from imagination and not using reference. Sure, it might look like that artist isn't using reference, but it's not true, the artist uses memories, which is based off of references. In a lot of art communities it's often times refereed as the visual library. The reason why some artists can make up characters without looking at a photograph is simply because they have a very expanded visual library off the figure and have an understanding of the fundamentals. Usually they may not necessary be able to see what the character looks like before they actually draw it, because the knowledge is usually in bits and pieces. Fictional beasts are the same way too, they have a very expanded knowledge on the anatomy of animals and they can create remixes of that knowledge and understanding.
There are some artists that can perceive what their drawing will look like long before they finish it off, but this is because they are simply familiar and experienced with the subject matter. For example, if I was drawing a front face of a blonde with a ponytail, I'd probably know what it would look like long before it's done simply because I've drawn dozens if not hundred of front faces, blondes, and ponytails. Heck with that combination so generic, I could've drawn that already hundreds of times. From this familiarity it's no surprise that I know what its going to turn out long before it's done. But drawing from experience is different then drawing from imagination. Simply because you've done the work before.

And to note the "build up" methods of course are a lot less predictable then certain other methods of art, and it becomes incredibly difficult to draw things exactly as what you see in the imagination (your more or less just drawing from theory then imagination). But that's kind of the beauty of it all, it's a mystery not just to the audience of how it will turn out, but also to you.

All this mental gymnastics.
stfu and go draw

What's wrong with thinking about how drawing works?
Plus this is hardly mental gymnastics.

>Drawing from imagination is largely a myth
I get what you mean, but how about seeing it as your imagination consisting of memories, rather than those being used instead of imagination?
After all, what most people mean by saying that is drawing from memory or simply without direct reference on hand. Else, the only people who could draw from imagination are blind. And even then, they couldn't really, because the don't see what they are doing. The term would become obsolete.

Also, not being able to replicate what you envision in your mind is the worst anguish.

Okay that's nice dear now go draw
>>
Everything that's imagination is a morphed view of things you've seen in reality. Drawing is no different. But seeing more things and references allows you to manipulate things in ways you haven't seen before by combining multiple images to produce what you want.

It seems OP can draw but sucks at writing.

I dont get the point of this thread.
What exactly is a myth about this all?

Anyways drawing from imagination, I get images of cartoon characters and creatures pop in my head all the time and I can observe them if I know what I'm looking for (forms, anatomy, shapes, proportion) and I draw them.

Often when I am designing somethi g,the mind and the hand barely are in communion . I let the forms drift out of the pen,as surprised at what appears on the paper as anyone looking over my shoulder would be. I may have a vague idea when I set out,but its a lot of experimenting that makes an image coalesce.

This image is the single most triggering example of "I'm artsy so I put my tools in the shot" that I've ever seen. It illicits actual anger from me when I look at it for too long
