Go to a place which likes most if not all art and will give attention, deviantart for example. Even though it's a hug box, you don't want to get shot down while still a beginner. Just remember to not stop drawing, and once you feel like your good enough post your art in more places.

>Really just want to draw cartoons
then draw cartoons
in addition to the studies you are already doing
wht you want to draw should always be your main focus, and studies are meant to aid in achieving that

There is an improvement, but as it seems with many artists I've seen in these threads. Your poses go from dynamic to stiff, from action poses to standing at the viewer staring.

I'm not sure if it's just using tutorials that make you draw a straight af figure with 8 heads as the length blah blah blah, or something else. It sure seems like you/they are having the organic feel sucked out as you progress down a path of books and rulers. REMEMBER, it's important to use the fundamentals as a tool to create what's in your minds eye, not just to copy, copy, copy! I mean unless that's what you want to do...

The light mood you had on the left was better. The new one is all bold and dark and the shadows you added feel weird to look at because it's like you want detail but at the same time are trying to simplify it while the left one is just straight up simplified, so it's no problem.

you should do your "own stuff" as well as studies
otherwise art will turn into a chore and before long you have conditioned your brain to only think in the "normal" way and you are no longer creative

that's why there are so many artists but so few art around, don't train your brain to mediocrity please
>>
>>2840342
i do, i did not put them here because they are not this linear in time, some of them are longer projects and/or collaborations, also i have tons of unfinished stuff which i just abandoned because i realized i did not have the skillset yet to pull them off, and stuff that i come back to from time to time and change/improve according to my new knowledges

Anon, you can draw exactly 2 faces. Get off this board
>>
>>2834935
Idk if you're still here
But work on your hard edges. Remember cast shadows are hard, form shadows are soft.
70% soft 30%sharp too is a good goal because it gives you a focal point.
>>
>>2843540
What I see here is 8 completely different and interesting characters with relatively different styles. Only issue here is you're not consistent anon.. Great job otherwise!
What time period are these taken from? They seem very different.
>>
>>2841394
>mechs
It probably helps that I'm obsessed with robotics and all things related to robots. It means that I take extra care when drawing them. On the contrary, I hate people, and I never look anybody in the eye so I'm terrible at faces and figures.

General Mech tips
>build lots of Gundams models to familiarize yourself with joint anatomy and panel details
>70% panels 30% exposed mechanics
>practice gesture and figure drawing to get a sense of weight and keep your mechs from looking stiff
>>
>>2843552
I think the problem is the opposite. He relies a bit too much on two different head angles and a neutral expression. That's easy to remedy though.
>>
>>2843648

>>2843653
Yea, I essentially stopped. I've drawn like 4 times since inktober.

These are made in the range of 3-4 years, and don't include any sketches and studies I've made meanwhile. Also are character concepts. You don't go wild with such as its not required..
>>2843543

>>
>>2844035
...I don't get it. Your first one is much more polished and has very good techniques while the second one has better use of colors. It's like you went in two directions at the same time.
>>
>>2844035

2014 is better anon. Even the color could be fixed easily, it's not enough of a change to make a fuss over. The gesture, flow composition and stuff really fell off, and it looks like you took up a tumblr-esque cartoony style. Neither are terrible, just a really weird change.

What I notice about this progress thread is you can really tell the artist inspiration or what they probably like from other artist. Like their weaknesses show off that they're not following off of other artist that have strong composition, flow, style, or perspective, but instead just nice renders (or maybe just not taking that into consideration). So many of these could be incredible if they really worked with the perspective/flow, to get some neat dynamic images. I love these types of threads though, keep working hard.

but I did make a tiny bit of progress by cutting off coloring and focusing more on drawing better; faces look less dumb (it's more noticeable in my studies of realistic faces but I have a bad habit of deleting them).
I'm also getting out of my comfort zone by drawing random shit like cars etc.

I'm glad I don't have a job in art or else I'd be fucked.

Very good techniques? Are you kidding me man? You gotta be pretty amateur to think that. Those shitty-ass lines, that wonky anatomy, that formless random blending, those dumpy proportions, that random shading on the metal bits, that lazy overlay filter like the other anon said...That is not good technique. Just look at Sonic's eyes in the old one. The new one is a lot tighter, has better colors, and more energy. The characters look a lot more appealing. I seriously can't believe anybody is saying the old one is better.

I disagree. The shading is a lot better in the 2014 picture, where the gradient emphasized the roundness of the head and body, and the shading on the metal makes it feel more like textured chrome. I like the robotic eye, too. 2014 pic looks like they put some real time in it. 2016 is like a 15 minute redraw.

It only looks that way.
I used to do stuff like this without any fundamental knowledge.

It looks way better than how I'm currently drawing, but I'm certain I'm at an intermediate stage before I return to how I used to create. I need to master the fundamentals. I was very intimidated by creating a figure out of nothing, and I believe it's showing. The pelvis was originally intended to twist in the progress picture. You can see it if you look carefully.

TL;DR
I was "good" at drawing before I picked up the fundamentals, but I was severely constrained as to what I could create, and I was merely good at concealing that constriction.

Can't say I agree, but you know how it is. I definitely did make some alternative style decisions in that time and I think my art was better for it. I dropped a lot of bad stylistic habits. It's weird that you think the new one is more tumblr because my style was a lot more influenced by tumblristic tendencies in 2014, while I moved further away from that in 2016.

6 years of drawing once every 3-4 months as hobby. Just recently I decided to start studying and really focusing on becoming good. Hence why i decided to post as all i get usually is "its great, awesome, amazing" At least I have eye to see why its shit. I need to work a lot more on anatomy specially, and the hands are utter trash. The rest is obviously shitty half assed rendering. The whole thing took me about 3 hours focused work.. At least I've got two contracts at the moment, which is why I can give a fuck on actually improving...
>>
>>2846454
What the fuck where do I sell me some contracts??
>>
>>2845790
Talent because I can draw like this without reading any books nor do I draw very often.

I grow just looking at images that are better than mine.

Not a gloat but if my city commissions and I've got a few contract jobs from a comic company and small mmo at ages as low as 15, It's a simply reality that I was talented when I see people train and study for years to still not be able to draw what I can; I didn't say I was a AAA studio art god as the only reason I'm on this board now is that I realize I can be better and wish to gain that status.

>Triggered by the world talent

Ignore that are progress images spanning 4+ years of 20+yr old anons busting their ass to get better and some 15 years olds on instagram that's never opened an anatomy book are f same skill or shitting on them.

Talent exist what are they suppose to call it, training can just get you anywhere if you invest enough into it.
>>
>>2845790
Dumbass those "drawings" are not even 1min doodles and are smaller than my thumb so I'd know how I wanted the character to look now, the progress is the facial render.
>>
>>2846791
>and some 15 years olds on instagram that's never opened an anatomy book are f same skill or shitting on them.

Where do you get that weird idea from? If you have good anatomy, chances are, you have opened an anatomy book or studied anatomy one way or another in the past. Talent means you learn things faster, it doesn't mean the universe is pouring knowledge into your brain while you sleep, you dumb fuck.
>>
>>2846829
Not same anon, but untrue I had pretty good anatomy before I ever opened an anatomy book, i had decent proportions because I drew an awful lot, when I started using anatomy books it mostly help me with things beneath the skin like muscle.

Cmon anon, you're better than that.
>>

> I had pretty good anatomy before I ever opened an anatomy book,

That's called Dunning Kruger Syndrome. I mean, I'm not saying you have to study from anatomy books, but you have to have learnt proportions and anatomy from something if you ever were good at it. Whether that's studying from life, being observant, studying other artists or whatever, you don't magically get good at something out of thin air, that's just not how talent works.

It's very easy to prove this as well. Go ahead and draw a random animal that you've never drawn before from imagination without looking at reference. Take a careful look at that end result. This is what you call your "talent".
>>
>>2846927
>good at something out of thin air, that's just not how talent works
No anon, that is how talent works.
Talented people typically can't tell you why they can do what they do, so it's assumed it just comes naturally to them through a similar experience or genetics.

A child with a photographic memory won't be able to tell you why he never takes notes but always does better than most the class on a test or why they draw much better than the rest of the children like that 6 year old boy that paints landscapes, that's talent.

Seems IC just get's upset with the word, it's a legitimate way for one to explain why they can do something they haven't worked at others fail to. It doesn't mean they think they're better than you so throw your syndrome memes out, they aren't indigo children blessed by god they just have a higher base aptitude towards the subject.
>>
>>2846954
>they aren't indigo children blessed by god they just have a higher base aptitude towards the subject.

That's exactly what I'm saying you retard. Higher base aptitude means you can learn faster and understand certain concepts more easily. You still have to learn them though. My challenge still stands. If you want to prove me wrong, oh talented on, go and draw a moderately challenging animal that you've never drawn or studied from imagination without looking at references.

>Enjoy the learning/creative process, not the result.

This is the part I struggle most with. I have a standard for myself that is too high (Given the amount of work I put in), and I know that. People keep telling me that if I just work at it then after a ~2-3 month period of being shit and hating you will get to a point where you are ok with things.

I have been drawing/painting **Off and on** for years now I still feel bad. I WANT to like the process, I WANT to be an artist, but so far everything I have made makes me feel really bad about myself.

I recently got out of digital and back into pure traditional (water color) and there are new challenges associated with that, but I am willing to try.

Just feels like things are way more of an uphill battle than they should be. If I could get myself to enjoy things more then I feel like I would want to make art more regularly. Currently I am holding myself to an "At least one finished Painting a week" But maybe that isn't enough?

Like in a year they might do 200 finished pieces.

The anon above did 300 total. That is the difference core difference + other things.

The studying turns copy is actually somewhat accurate now that you say it is makes sense.

Besides just *Draw more* (which I would likely end up with the same problem.)

What are some tips to keep my studies "Studies" and not fall into copying?

>>2847827
I'm the person they are talking about (I made the

Artwork. I understand the idea of studies turning into copies, but not how to avoid it.

Correct use of studies is you walk away from things understanding something about the subject you didn't before. To the degree that you can either do it better next time, or that you understand it well enough to render it from imagination. (Or learning something new about light, color, edges, anatomy etc.)

So when you start painting something with a Goal of improving X, but in the end just paint something mechanically that ends up looking like the thing.

What I want to know is how not to get lost along the way. haha :P

Imaginative drawing is good, but it's just fun that makes you less likely to burn-out, it doesn't help you draw better. Do it in the spare time.

wouldn't you rather be able to draw whatever you wanted from your head rather than going through the hassle of finding references for everything?

Besides, when I draw from imagination it feels more free. I know the information already, I'm not tied down to a reference so it comes out more loose and gestural, which I think is a good thing.
>>
Something recent.

I remember getting a critique on the 2014 one my friend said: Why does it look like he's holding 2 dicks in his hands.

Needless to say the more time you spend on something the more well rendered it becomes, I'd say 2014 was roughly 120 minutes and right is double that.

I had to look up the "Bill Burr" show you were talking about. You're pretty spot on man, lol. I disagree on the FOP though, for the most part at least. While he is the same yoked character archetype as Von Strangle and the silhouette isn't too far off, that Hartman style is all about ditching form in favor of a flat, graphic shape.

Rather than FOP I may have inadvertently channeled Hoss Delgado from Billy and Mandy, or perhaps one of my many other supposed influences I won't come close to emulating in my lifetime. Looks a lot like that John k. Ripping Friends sketch from this chart I made over a year ago, in fact. I never would have noticed until you pointed it out.

All you have to do is clean up your shit more.
>>
>>2849426
You need more thicc lines. They were very appealing. Also just noticed this is only two months apart. You need to catch your appeal from left even though right is cleaner.
>>
>>2849428
Hmm, you've given me something to think about, Ill definitely try with thicker lines next time

Push your values go darker and lighter, don't just randomly stroke shit, follow the form. remeber the direction the light is coming from and put shadows where the light has no access to and light where the light would hit in the drawing. Values = light and shadow my mans.

if only you didn't copy kr0npr1nz and other anime artists and instead looked at a real person for once

Its not thicker lines, its about lineweight.

do you have a blog or some method of contact?

Well, a painter has other skills besides painting, composition, how the eye flows looking at the picture, how the colors work together.
From the people I've asked, such improvements are happening as I make more of these.

Thanks I'll work on understanding line weight

You didn't improve in that time at all. You've drawn a lot so you're that skill, now completely plateaued.

Looks great! What sort of technique d'you use in your brush strokes? I've seen it often but haven't figured out the proper way to execute them.

It was first after 2012 in my second year of highschool that I started to consider making a career with art. Not going to do it the traditional way though but I know for a fact that I will make it cause I believe in myself and that is all that matters! Nobody can ever stop me from doing what I love.

Don't have an artblogg but I have an instagram.

I think I plateaued pretty hard around 3 years ago and have hardly improved since then.
>>
>>2851233
still a progress tho, nice work
>>
>>2850820

I just try to paint whats on the screen, I don't think about technique as consciously as many people might but this is also my greatest weakness. I'd say just learn to use different brushes to achieve certain results; like hair rendering, skin rendering etc.
>>
>>2851233
Everybody plateaus at some point, especially when you start getting into the higher skill levels. Just keep going anon, you'll keep improving.

I still get commissions every now and then and I'm working on a comic that I'll probably publish eventually though

Fix the face, lower the bellybutton, work on background, go darker on dark areas, and keep on drawing, you're doing a good job.

>>
>>2843844
check cgpeers, i've found the portrait and figure course on there
>>
>>2852727
Honestly it looks like traced shit. Hope it's not the case, though.
>>
>>2852601
>>2852727
I dont trace the photos, I obviously use them as reference but I draw them and when I finish the sketch I superimpose the photo and see what I did wrong, then I remove the photo and do it again until I think it looks similar to the picture

And dont understand the decent and shitty garbage at the same time
>>
>>2852781
Bollocks. I hope you're trolling.

And what's with the hand covering the eye one?
>>
>>2852879
Why? Is it bad to do that?
That one was quite easy, I did it on Inkscape
>>
>>2848262
Cool.
>>

>>
>>2852902
You're actually autistic, sad!
>>
>>2852902
Yes, aren't you?

There is no way that someone who could draw something like those trace drawings would also draw that hand covering the eye.>>2852607
>>
>>2852906
Yes it's possible because I did ...
I dont understand why you think it's trace, I can draw the others just the way I made the eye
>>
>>2852914
I mean the eye the way I made the others
>>
>>2852914
>I dont understand why you think it's trace
Because you clearly don't know how eyes or hands look. I still don't think you're serious.
>>
>>2852919
The hand and eye was me trying something more simple, I see why you say I dont know eyes or hands, because I dont really know

In the others I was looking to the picture so even if I dont know hands really good they dont look that awful
>>
>>2852937
You either traced the drawings or you're joking with the eye one.
It's not simplified, it's wrong. Just tell me you're joking and we can both move on with our lives.
>>
>>2852945
Ok, the drawing is worse than I thought It' s a joke
>>
>>2852781
>I superimpose the photo and see what I did wrong, then I remove the photo and do it again until I think it looks similar to the picture

Quickscope tracing is now a thing?

I used to post on /ic/ almost everyday. Got into drawing in 2013, I'm 30 now...

Thanks for the accolades - I started drawing again after a 3-4m hiatus, I'm hoping for a comeback, but don't want to jinx it.

/ic/ discord is neat. People are a lot less strict there but they'll still talk shit about your art cause they love you.
