Reminds me of an old card that I always liked, Disintegrate. Simple and effective, and probably reminds me of Terminator 2 and pings my nostalgia gland a bit.

Monitoring this thread hard, since I would like to do this one day
>>2831976
Hard to say who is the best, but I think some of the older guys like Kev Walker have the strongest work for the format. He's got so many iconic artworks for the game, whereas a lot of the newer artists have nice polish but are very forgettable.
How the fuck pic rel got into magic, its literally deviantart tier shit
Always liked the old traditional art style in magic cards over the new overworked digital bullshit. They make card art that's too busy with with shit around that you just can't see in small card frame.
Nils Hamm's Baleful strix is one of all time favorites.

Cock magic
Drew tucker is GOAT
>>2832271
Art direction went to shit the past 10 years, because le video game concept art fad became popular. It's rare to have actual finished paintings used for cards.
>>2832271
the color makes it look like soup broth from the thumbnail
the best one
>>2834083
they are accepting tumblr art now?
>>2832829
>le video game concept art fad became popular
>becoming popular before being created
That's not how it works.

It's interior packaging art, would be surprised it it had 1/4th of the budget or deadline of actual card or key art.
>>2831976
anything before the 3d stuff. arabian knights was aweosme. i luv the opriginal artwork look. the art direction now is shit. i stopped playing coompletely.

That thumbnail doesn't read very well.
aethersworn cannonist is a nice one.

Lol, I run dragonsoul in my deck
Underrated Chase Stone
drew tucker was one of the best mtg artists. what happened.
he's got that impressionistic style and it's so badass
>>2836920
To think that I used to idolize that guy. When he paints stuff for himself he's great, but this is cringe tier
>>2837319
>cringe tier
Elaborate please
Is it just me or does most contemporary western digital fantasy art (including mtg) mostly have designs that seem to be heavily influenced by asian fantasy? Even if you look at things like the game Doom (2016) the demons look as if they were designed by korean concept artist. I think it's an awful trend. I love stuff like Paul Bonner though .
>>2831976
yes i know i am boring.
i will never draw like this and it's all my fault
>>2837411
>i will never photobash like this
Fixed that for you.
>>2836920
what happend to the art direction. they're so lossed
Donato Giancola - Already loved his mtg art and now I have the opportunity to take a couple of his classes. He works with oil paints, something I've been really focusing on lately.

How do you get texture like that? Or is he just autistic like Ruan Jia and zooms in 3000x
>>2837676
>How do you get texture like that?
how am i supposed to know, i am artistic trash
>>2837676
photobashing. The mossy rocks are taken from photographic 'reference'.
>>2837676
Just find lots of different brush downloads and start making some of your own. Different brushes helps a lot with getting textures and nice rough qualities. Making your own can be awesome too because you can create whatever texture you need or even stamps for brush and trees
Rebecca Guay is the only one that I still recognize and remember by name.
>>2837682
Looks like it, but it wouldn't be terribly difficult to achieve with a few different textured brushes layered on each other
>>2837319
I mean that all layers look like they are lit independently giving a overall flat collage-ish look. I know that some commissions are just to pay the damn bills, but it looks so uninspired compared to his other stuff in my opinion.
The older artworks are very hit and miss but have so much more character than the newer ones. Sad! Even >>2834072 or >>2834106 are endearing in their own way.
>>2839489
>loose brushwork in foreground
>sharp photo in background
t-that's not how you do it, anon
>>2839501
ok yea ur right. maybe it's been awhile.
Rob Alexander, Quinton Hoover (RIP), Rebecca Guay, Drew Tucker... these are the names that automatically pop into my head when asked about noticeable painters.
The current crop might be technically more refined, but I can't think of anyone sort of being quite as unique as those artists. I guess that's what better art direction does.
>>2839755
exactly.
drew tucker is something else. talk about down to earth and friendly. fucking cool dude.
