Probably because anime and manga are huge industries that produced lots of great artists alongside all the western Deviantart tier shit. Anthro art can also be fairly respected as long as the artists aren't blatantly expressing their disturbing sexuality through it. For example I have yet to see someone who is interested in comics talk shit about Blacksad just because it has animal people in it. Or a character designer or animator talk shit about Milt Kahl and other legendary Disney animators who worked on those animated movies that accidentally gave birth to furries. Or various cartoonists and children book illustrators etc who still use animal people. It's always the sexual aspect that disturbs people and rightfully gets a kneejerk reaction.

Everything we draw from imagination has a reference, it might not be just one but a combination of stuff but no matter how hard we try we can not draw something which we haven't seen - for example dragons, we haven't seen dragons but we've seen snakes and lizards and birds and you get the point

My suggestion for designing outfits is to not only save pics of clothing styles from around the world and throughout history but also save lots of pictures of things of all kinds. I have a folder specifically dedicated unique objects and I find myself going to it for inspiration more than most other folders. I'll look at a thing such as pic related and try to incorporate some aspect of it into a character design. The secret to design in general is not to come up with something brilliant out of nowhere but rather to combine existing things in a fashion no one has seen before.
