There are many issues with the body and her head looks oddly pasted on. I wish I could give you more crit but I'm not sure where to begin (there are problems with her arms / hip area / overall disjointment), just do some figure studies and you'll get there.

I dunno, using pitch black like this is bad in color pieces. I was that guy who painted the trees and rocks that got in the last thumbnail btw. If you study color more, the shadows in that piece would be more of a dark desaturated maroon since objects lit by yellowish white light(the sun) tend have the colors that get higher in brightness go towards yellow and desaturate while shadows tend towards purple and desaturate as well.

I try to give males thicker necks, because I think that makes them more attractive/manly. Feminine men get somewhat thinner necks.

Yeah I have actually on pencil and paper (trying different eyes). Funny story actually, I used to just used completely different styles of eyes for different characters but then my humans didn't look like the belonged to me as their robot overlord, you know what I'm saying? I tried going for one style but for one that could allow for variations like the old guy's eyes for example. I also play around with the eyelash thickness and roundness of shapes for the eyes. I'll still use different eyes for radically different characters but I think I've found a pretty decent solution to the problem of sameface.

I purposefully avoided hair to make sure I understood how to draw heads right via the methods on Fun With A Pencil (Loomis is a pretty cool human). I think I've improved as now I always see whenever I make the cranium too big or the mouth too low(looking back on my picture again I can already see some mistakes that I might've been too lazy too fix) and although I think I still need a some fine tuning on some angles, I think I know what I'm doing and can make the face decent enough without wanting to short circuit myself (although for extreme gay angles I gotta finetune with reference). However, if anon says I can move on to hair I guess I can put heads on the memory disk for now and practice them in conjunction with the whole body.

Applied what I learned through relevant studies and practiced with deliberation and intent. Try to draw cute girls from immigration, look like shit, want to kill myself, back to studying. I practiced 4 hours doing studies but once I learned how to construct I started to break down and draw the people around me in secret. I could make them realistic but do the inherent nature of how people move all the fucking time I had to resort back to my anime style to capture them. I think I've gotten bored of realism for humans though, I'm now honing in on the anime trash and now I have downloaded most of Vilppu's power onto my hard drive. Now I must apply it to my anime humans and my task will be complete. Robot anon will now resume his studies now, as the mere act of drawing itself has become entertainment for him.

Robot anon here, and although I am still educating myself in the animes myself I can tell you that what you need is proper fundamentals. Try checking out Fun With a Pencil it is actually very forgiving for what you're trying to do. But with other than that I do have some specific tips I can give you:
1: Your heads might have a little bit too much at the top. Try shortening them a bit.
2:You are not hue shifting nor changing the saturation your colors when you darken them, which makes them look dead and lifeless especially for the skin. Skin actually reddens and gets more saturated the darker it gets because of how the light enters the skin and reflects some of the red from the blood when it bounces back out. Most of the time (when the sun isn't down or is in sunset or sunrise) the sun emits a bright yellowish white light. Basically, what colors when exposed to light will go towards yellow white on the color wheel and the colors that are darker and in shadow will go towards blueish purple (because of the ambient blue light of the sky). If this sounds confusing, watch these videos and try color picking photographs or color pieces that you like the colors in. Be sure to watch the color box and color wheel when you do this and notice the direction the color picker in both them change towards. You will be suprised in how the actually move.

i feel like a lot of the body is very 2D and flat. theres not a lot of structure to it--especially in the torso. the legs look too small and stubby, and the arms are different lengths with the one on the right being shorter. The background also feels like a mess of random things put together and is distracting.

you should always learn from real people even if making something stylized. Just because its anime doesnt mean it has zero basis from real life. I suggest you use refrences and learn more anatomy starting with basic human proportions (where do hands reach down when at the side, how long the thigh is etc) also learn some colour theory/colour wheel

I use Clip Studio Paint and I use the Paint and Apply brush for basically all my shading. It is cool because if you swirl it around a bit it will blur the edges like a and if you press hard and slow it will produce a harder edge. For really soft gradients I use a custom brush that I downloaded from the new material downloader Clip Studio has built in. I think it was called Uneven Layering brush or something.
