>>2828725
hey im using the free tvpaint program you guys have and so far it's pretty good, but is there a way to make the pen tool much darker or add ons to have a more solid brush? i want to use it for linework but it's mild transparency throws me off so fucking hard
>>

>>

Can't you adjust it in the options?
>>
>>2829455
Thanks, was definitely going for a bit of an Adventure Time aesthetic.
>>
>>2829302
I've done simple animations in Photoshop before but it was a miserable experience. I'm not sure if it was a setting I needed to hit in the software or if I just wasn't using it right in general or what but every time I'd make a new frame all the previously created layers would be showing by default so I'd have to hide them all manually. At least that's how I remember it.

>>2829347
Yeah CSP seems good. I don't really like how you kind of have to run around in circles to copy a frame but it's certainly more stable

>>2829456
That's what Aaron Blaise uses so it must be good, but it seems like ToonBoom is industry standard now. For now while I'm just doing simple exercises I think CSP is probably the best option.
>>
>>2828749
Boring visuals, instead of walking and talking there should be zooms on faces on different angles but overall pretty impresiive work
>>
>>2829504
I see where you're coming from. All those walking and dialog bits can get a little stale, I think. I would have liked for there to be more animation too but I figured it's best to improve on that in the next project.
>>
>>2829525

Okay, clip studio is proving to be an adequate program to test simple animations on-but when you export the file itself, true to its name it seems all too willing to "clip" the hell out of the result. I can't really seem to find anything in the software or manual that might hint as to what I'm doing wrong but I'm also kind of dyslexic so I wouldn't be surprised if I missed something.

Nevermind I think I know what it is.

One of the first things I did was remove all of the visible margin guides and stuff that I erroneously assumed were for analog printing exclusively. Unless I'm mistaken it looks like I have to just leave those eye-sores visible and stay in the boundaries.

Not a fan to be honest but until Krita gets a little more stable it's still better than nothing. I'm glad I tested it with a ball instead of trying to do something more complex. Looks like you can't move multiple layers at once so.
>>
>>2829747
I can't be too much of help, since I haven't used CPS's animation tools in a year, but there's definitely a way to export it so the FPS remains smooth (I had the same issue as you and it took a while to resolve it). Dig around the "save as"/"export" window because there's a lot of options hidden in the drop-down menus and all.

Ah I didn't mean the fluidity of the animation was affected, rather I found that the size of the exported canvas is constrained to the "margins" that I had disabled shortly after which I was blissfully unaware of while I was animating. Would have been good to know beforehand, I would have been screwed if I made a "real" animation without being aware of that.

Not all productions use paper, but it is still much more common there than here.

It's funny, I looked into Retas when I learned about it. They tried to sell it in the US for like, one year, and then just gave up.

Also that's kid of cheating. Mob Psycho uses SAND animation for some of its shots. It's way more out there than most anime.

Why are you guys interested in animation? What converted you?

A lot of people like animation without being interested, nor even aware, of the craft, I feel like they don't realize the work behind it.

I wonder how most people interested in animation started to realize and be fascinated by this.
>>
>>2830793

No problem. That's a great resource. There's things in there I had no idea AE could do.

The scripting stuff, for one, still makes my head spin.

It's cliche, but blame Miyazaki. I was already interested in animation as an art form, but he was one of the first I saw that showed me what could be done with it.

Dunno, I was the kind of kid who saw something they liked, and wanted to do it themselves like cartoons. Had this old program called animpro on dos, played with it a lot. Then later animation came back to focus because of silly dreams of making games.

I really don't believe so, but I'm very new to the program so I'm kind of just figuring stuff like that out. So far I'm not a big fan of how it works but I don't even know what if anything I'm doing "the right way" either so I have to reserve judgment.

Apparently it has a bunch of poseable 3D models pre-installed though, and you can make and save your own poses. That's pretty darn nifty.

I just found it to be the best medium to tell a story, all my childhood I loved watching cartoons, I'd spend all day watching CN, Jetix and Ultra and even some german channels. Back then I had little to no understanding of english but I still loved watching nearly every cartoon, I was just fascinated by animation... so much so that I kept thinking of stories and characters I'd like to make. And then I found the gobelins channel whose shorts inspire me. Of all other mediums I find animation the most satisfying one, seeing your drawing move is something I could watch all day, it's the most fulfilling basically. The things I've animated so far haven't been the greatest but I'm hoping to improve :)

If you're interested in seeing what I've done so far you can find a link to my channel down below :) But yeah, in summary I can't really explain why I love animation so much, I really like to draw and feel the need to draw but just drawing never cut it for me, making your drawing move is like giving it life and that's the most fulfilling part. :)

>>2831388

If I recall correctly the brush actually stays the chosen size relative to the canvas when you zoom in/out now which is also huge. The fact it took them this long to implement that as a "feature" is astounding. Just one of the reasons it's not the animation standard anymore and probably won't be any time soon no matter what kind of bells and whistles they attach to it. I still might consider trying it out for a month or two though just to see what's up.

Yeah I'm really struggling with this. Actually getting one done-as bad as it is-has really helped demystify the process though, hopefully my next ones will be...marginally better.

I'm going to do a couple more "utilitarian" walk cycles like that to try and hammer the general idea of how it works in my head and then I'll try and do something with more character.

It took me literally 5 minutes to make this so it's really not that hard

1 - animate the thing with sketches before you start refining the drawings
2 - work on your keys and passing positions, if the keys are bad then it's all bad, same goes for the passing positions
3 - draw from life if you can, if you can't then just use one of those reference sites from which you can draw models
>>
>>2835500
Try removing or adding some frames somewhere in there, the animation feels evenly spaced out so it's kind of boring - watch out for that in the next thing you do

Also use a different brush with a bit of texture if you can, if not, use a thinner brush. Also, don't use solid black for your outlines, use a damped down brown or blue

Well, timing could use some work and the stripes and dashes to indicate speed are a bit distracting.

What actually happens to his flesh goatee? It stretching out beyond it's proportions just looks a bit weird since the animation doesn't provide any sort of reasoning.

Also,
>>
>>2831064
In a reverse round house the shoulders lead the hips which leads the leg. The body should twist and not be flat when twirling other wise it just looks like she is dancing, not kicking
>>
>>2832232
I like the art style. The animations look good except for the weight to the kid, he feels a bit floaty, but I don't know what you can do about that now since you are pretty close to being done? and yeah take out the cuts to black.
>>
>>2835233
I like it. One thing I notice in almost all your animations is that almost everything seems floaty. Try playing around with expressing more weight.
>>
>>2836153

To provide a counter suggestion to >>2836173 I like the stripe and dashes to indicate movement but, you shouldn't rely on them to express the movement. Try animating the movements first and then once they work with out the dashes, go in and put them in. (but really i think they work fine how they are)

Also for the wattle, if it stretches in the second turn (the left turn) shouldn't it stretch in the first turn (the one right)

>>
>>2836237
But if the movement works without the dashes and smearing, wouldn't it be better to leave them out?
If you want a rapid movement, I think it's wise to think of smearing right away as you are planning out the keyframes of the movement instead of pasting them over when you already animated the thing.
>>
>>2836250
>But if the movement works without the dashes and smearing, wouldn't it be better to leave them out?
It could just be a style thing.
>>
>>2836252
But if you want your animation to look solid and tight you'd have to think of smearing, just like squashing and stretching, as you think of the movement instead of some effect you paste over your work when it's construction is done.

At least, that's how I see it.
>>
>>2836259
If you want your animation to look solid and tight, sure you would want to think of using smearing like that. but If you look at stuff like >>2831229 or like Bill Plympton's work, you dont need your artwork to be solid and tight to make the animation work. If >>2836153 wants to explore and try new ways of smearing I'd say go for it. In the example he posted it doesn't work out perfectly (especially with secondary motions and follow through), but I think he is onto something that could be pretty cool.
>>
>>2836153
Everything is so evenly spaced out

The bat is drawn nicely, but your timing and spacing is fucked beyond repair.

Draw larger and feeeel the weight and the energy of that ball, there's just no other way to make it believable.
>>
>>2839276
If you are animating in 2s its basically 12 frames per second. However you absolutely want 24 for better spacing
>>
>>2839279

Oh Hi Richard Williams! I didn't see you there!
>>
>>2839244
Your timing is off. The ball is moving too slow to be hit by a bat, or pulled gravity. It's floating down, not being whacked down.

The mass of the ball changes constantly, most obviously at the bottom of the fall, where it suddenly quadruples in size and becomes a cushion.

prove me wrong retard. 1s are animated with every frame being unique. 2s have one unique framed extended to another and 3s have one unique extended to 2 frames. whats so hard to understand? the way you make it sound with animating in 12 fps is that you literally have to set the frame limit to be 12 fps. I get that you said 2s is like animating in 12 fps, but the fact is your still animating in 24fps. you made yourself even look more retarded when you thought you knew what animating in 2s is..

>>
>>2840451
How stupid are you. It is completely clear. If you animate in 2s with 24 fps it's basically 12fps. Though it is just 12 paintings per second while still 24 fps. This is in all sincerity the stupidest post I think I've ever read on this board and you're actually gloating about it. Sad!

I don't know what you think an exposure is, but the fact you referred to it as a 'buzzword' says it all.

1 exposure per drawing = the drawing is EXPOSED for the duration of ONE FRAME = Animating on 1s = 24fps

2 exposures per drawing = the drawing is EXPOSED for the duration of TWO FRAMES = Animating on 2s = 12fps

Good god, man.

you keep hiccuping. I did't say anything about animating in 2s = 12 fps is wrong. all im saying is you need to mention 1s = 24 fps and thats not clear in there.

>2 he means that if you expose a painting 2 times means it is there for 2 frames. How do you count?
to me it sounds likes hes saying every new drawing (which is the unique drawing (1))(per drawing) has two exposed drawings in between the unique frames like 1 1 1 2, when its 1 1 2.

ye-but proportion man. Holy hell unless this thing is a Japanese demon or a giraffe I think you missed the difference in spacing between your picture and the example.. Sure its a cartoon thing, and its not completely drawn out but I don't think its ment to be flying around, its just an exaggerated head turn
>>
>>2830701
you should spend more time working on your spacing instead

Pretty damn good anon. Only thing I would even really recommend is some more facial movement.

Is there a boom of popularity for the practice of animation? Maybe the sakuga enjoyment has created new interests in the community

hey guys,id like to start practicing 2d traditional animation and im not sure where to even begin.
i have a scanner, various drawing medium and alot of printing paper.

can i get some advice for a guy trying to start up please?like what software i should use when i scan them in tips and stuff

(on a separate note can staples substitute the hole punches for the pages?)
>>
>>2850798
I'd be up for it but lets be honest no one here animates.
>>
>>2851430
you should build a lightbox if you want to do it traditionally, it's really easy to build without having to buy a lot of material. I built one with a cardboard box, glass from some picture frames and an old desktop lamp.

You also need to get a pegbar, again this is something you can diy quite easily. The pegbar needs to line up with the holes in the paper. Stapling papers together is not a good idea because you need to be able to rearrange them for inbetweens and changing timing etc.

You don't need any special software to scan it, I use Photoshop to turn the frames into a gif but I am sure there are other programs for that too.

lots of shit to learn from on youtube if you search for "traditional animation"

Is there a crack for CACANI yet? I need it now.
>>
>>2851430
learn to draw first

>>2851612
no ya don't, get gud
>>
>>2851430
All you need. A 3 hole puncher, one of those things that can hold the paper after being 3holed, and a pencil. A light box only helps for inbetweening frames that resemble each other almost exactly, and most do without it. It's all about flipping. Holding frames between your fingers, and looking back at them constantly. while drawing the new frames.

Anyway. Animator survival kit. Get inspired, like seriously, have as much fun with it as possible, https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRTRqkhrehrY9hJJcLVUeRQ (Very talented animator that goes over some good habits and techniques to catch up on ), and again. Motivation is key here. I don't care who you are, after 5 minutes of drawing the same character, you'll get bored if not motivated or inspired enough to keep going.

>>2851775
Very productive.
>>
>>2851783
>Very productive.
Funny it is, even in the animators survival kit he explains at length how you need to be able to draw in order to animate, if >>2851430 jumps right in before even having the basics down they're probably just going to be met with frustration and won't get very far.
>>
>>2851430
I scan. I'll tell you my setup, but you probably won't like it.

>Opentoonz (Windows)
>Download FFMPEG support for exporting of gifs+webms
>Scans processed as jpegs (at least with my scanner)
>Use ezimba to convert to png, then make into transparency and actual black and white (make sure you convert to png first or you'll get a shitton of subtle grays you don't want)
>Load columns from locations on harddrive instead of the software-specific locations
>Name png files as [whatever]00001.png, [whatever]00002.png, etc
>Use Browser tab and rename option so that your drawings appear as one layer and don't need to be put into separate columns

Not for the faint of heart, but it works for me. It'll suck for a while before you understand how to do it
>>
>>2851612
CACANI sucks, draw on paper
>>
what are yalls thoughts on Animate CC?
>>
>>2851822
It's sad because I think it's the simplest to learn and doubles as a self-contained programming engine, but it's not very good for animation primarily because of its brush which they still haven't changed and show no interest in changing despite their users pleading with them for over a decade to do so. It's better than all previous iterations of Flash but it's still less than ideal for a variety of reasons.

Toonboom is the industry standard for a reason, but it's much more intimidating than Animate.

Luckily Adam Phillips has an awesome tutorial on it he released a couple months ago.

>>
>>2851832
different anon, thanks for the TB tut!
>>
>>2851832
interesting, i think i can see what you mean. I recently downloaded it as a means to teach myself animation. (watching Jazza's tutorials https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iXSQ8VcPcU)
so far i like the the ease and the workflow. could you elaborate on the problem with the brush? is it that it turns your lines into weird vector shapes? ive been sorta struggling with it but I thought maybe i was just bad and didnt know how to use it right.

i considered toonboom, but im a total beginner. like you said, i was intimidated. thanks for linking the tutorial.
>>
>>2851851
Yeah, it's mostly that the brush is obscenely bad. When you use TB and compare it to Animate/Flash it's like night and day. TB also has nice features like the ability to quickly swap out colors, create contextual color palettes, fill particle drawings just by lassoing them etc.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Q19QNBkh0Y (skip to about 16 minutes to topical portion of the video-and then subscribe to the guy's channel because it's great)
>>
How come the brush for flash mx is miles better than anything else they've done since?
>>
>>2851870
As an addendum, he's using the default brush settings. I think if you turn the smoothing setting down to like 10% or some really low number like that it's a bit better, but still not great.
>>
>>2851870
wow, yeah this channel IS great, thanks. glad i found this thread. I'll keep teaching myself using flash for now, but i'll probably jump ship once i feel comfortable with the basics of animating.

thanks for the advice all of you and i will take it,ill look into getting a punch ,and the flipping method.

as for the lightbox guy, that seems like a pretty worthwhile project to get into, but ill just practice the basics as is for a bit.
>>2851775
i agree, learning to draw fully will be rather helpful in this process, but as it currently stands i just want to learn animation and gestures alongside my unending climb of studies loomis and "git gud".I just feel like people whom hard commit to stuff like that without practicing what they started along this path for end up burning out easily,so im still just gonna go through with this
>>
>>2852005
i will get frustrated no matter what, when that happens ill break practice fundamentals some more then ill come back feeling better

>>2832232
Although the cuts to black fit with the timing, it would just be a smarter idea to tie jumpcuts to them instead of flashes to black. Or replace them with scenes of something else happening in the story, so we know there's a reason why this character is in this situation.

>>2850798

I'm sure there is. I just saw the opportunity of the open source software, started getting used to it, and figured it's probably better for the moment to mod my stuff and get a personal rhythm going instead of just throwing a shitfit and pirating ToonBoom. Plus the levels and stuff obviously lets me do a lot more than just importing the scans.

I don't know if I've ever posted this one on /ic/ or just /co/. This isn't quite Annecy-level form I'm employing right now.
>>
>>2855931
I know tvpaint has a scan cleaner tool that will automatically clean up any sequence of scanned jpegs, (tvp 10 is easy to pirate, i think its in the op links)
>>
>>2855931
>>2855964
Actually scratch that, I was playing around with that tool and it doesnt work how i thought. I hope you find an easier process eventually
