I've been putting in time every so often for about a year with very little progress. I know it's my fault. But I'm concerned that I might not really love art, just the idea of getting good.

I don't know any fine artists or painters or anything. And frankly I kinda don't care to know them. This makes me feel like a huge fake only learning art for silly reasons(comics) while not fully respecting the craft.

Someone studying guitar probably has idols or knows other guitarist's names from popular bands, jazz, etc. Aspiring comedians probably have favorite comedians or movies. So doesn't it make sense that someone who wants to learn art would at least have favorite artists or appreciate fine art or exhibits in museums? Because I kinda don't.

This all leads to me feeling like a fake and questioning if I'm even learning art for the right reasons.

I do not like life drawing and I don't really respect it. I don't want to create that kinda stuff, yet I need to in order to get good. So if I don't like drawing from life that's probably a red flag right? I like the idea of creating my own comic, but drawing from life and making realist art that I hate JUST to make comics feels fake and wrong.

Is this a normal thing for people who only want to do cartoons? Or am I deluding myself pretending to like art when I simply don't?

I can handle the truth and I think this board is bluntly honest, which I would more than appreciate. I just don't wanna keep wasting my time if I'm in this for the wrong reasons.
>>
I should add that I have done a couple life drawing classes with the nude figure. I understand why it's important.

But I just don't love how much time and devotion it takes to even remotely be OK, let alone good.

I do enjoy drawing from imagination. Cubes, shapes, quick figure sketches... that kinda stuff is kinda fun. But I know that won't help me get truly good. No idea if most people don't like life drawing or if this is even remotely normal, or if I'm really just not cut out for art. Again I'm open to all opinions. I just don't wanna keep wasting my time.

If you love drawing enough to keep doing it as a personal choice, i think you'll be fine OP.
I don't know how long you've been drawing for exactly OP but i'll say that if you've been doing it for 1-2 years you've only begun.
Your love for your craft "matures" or changes over time as you spend more time in it and liking things that you previously didin't is natural.
>>
I'm assuming you are a hobbyist? Or maybe an aspiring comic artist.

>But I just don't love how much time and devotion it takes to even remotely be OK, let alone good.

Life drawing actually helps you get good more efficiently (when done correctly) since the reference is actually already in front of you. There is less room for mistakes, making the usage of your time more efficient = therefore smarter practice.

>learning art for the right reasons.
There is no right answer for this anon. Your reasons are just as good as any other person's. It's normal to want to do things that you enjoy doing.
For your situation though, you just have to ask yourself whether do you like the idea of getting good (I do, and I draw because of this) or do you like the art of drawing (I also do, but sometimes I just want to bury myself in a hole). Just be honest with yourself.

E.g. I love singing but that doesn't mean I will take vocal lessons or try to get a 'right reason' to do it. I enjoy it, therefore I will do it.

>>2822960
I'm the same as you OP, please call me if you find an answer.
>>
>>2822973
You might not have an appreciation for fine arts but since your interest lies towards comics, you should try finding comics/artist/works that you like. Study from them and see whether you enjoy that process or not.
>>
>>2822960
surely you have artists that you at least like and are curious about how they make what they make
>>
>>2822973
Yes more of a hobbyist, I'd like to make a webcomic but I make enough money doing what I already do(which I enjoy a lot). I do not want to make a living as an artist.

However I'd love to reach an artistic level close to "pro" illustrators. But illustrators don't just draw from imagination... their style comes out of life drawing. And life drawing is just such a drag for me(good practice but final result is just "meh")

I get your point, and asking myself that question leads to a big blank. I don't know if it's just cause I wanna get good. And maybe I'd like drawing if I was better?

The part that really gets to me is how other artists always want to get better. I'm not sure I'd always want to improve.

I want to get good enough to have a style and just use it. If I could improve slowly over a decade, great. But just being good enough would feel like such a relief and I'm not sure if it's worth grinding 4-5 hours a day every day through life drawings that I despise just to reach that point.

It's a love-hate with art and I'm not sure if that's normal or if I'm forcing myself to like something that I shouldn't even bother doing

Good question--I guess stuff like this. kinda wacky ,great for cartooning.

Will Terrell is the only illustrator I know by name that I really love his work. But I don't make time to look at other illustrators... can't be bothered. I definitely do not appreciate fine art which seems like a huge red flag.

For comics I think owlturd is funny. But I don't necessarily love his art. I love his sense of humor.
>>
>>2822986
if will terrell is someone you like I'm pretty sure he has videos on youtube of him going over his process and experiences i the business, free pdf's of his sketchbooks on his website too. that might be helpful for you to watch
>>
>>2822988
I do understand but this is like watching someone draw and expecting to get good

The fundamental issue isn't the resources or educational opportunities. It seems to be my genuine interest in art as a whole which seems weak compared to by genuine interest in comics or funny drawings

Although I do get your point. I suppose it just doesn't answer the bigger question, and I don't think anything/anyone can answer it but me unfortunately
>>
>>2822986
>unironically liking youtube artist

kill yourself and your dog and if you don't own a dog your neighbors dog
>>
>>2823047
it's not that. you're just watching a video about a guy that does what you supposedly want to do and hearing his advice or experiences. if you can't be arsed to do something so passive and easy is that, you're probably right, you won't be able to listen to an instructor and get better at art. maybe I'm wrong, I do spend a lot of time on the internet and video tutorials are my second favorite thing to learn from other than books or looking at art I like.
>>
>>2822986
Will Terrel is a fucking hack. He has a face drawing tutorial where he completely miss-aligns the eyes (among other things) and at one time it was one of the first results for "face drawing tutorial".
>>
>>2823081
This is my point, everyone kinda sucks. Nobody is perfect.

I'm just saying it feels fake that I only wanna go so far... I do not want to be "the best" artist or even in the top tier. But good enough would be awesome... the concern is my lack of interest in most other art

BTW Will Terrell does storyboarding for WB so that hack is getting paid gigs in animation
>>
>>2823084
what the hell do you mean it feels fake. what IS this thread son?
>>
>>2822960
Couldn't agree more OP
Cancelled my schoolism membership, sold my tablet, and threw away all of my sketchbooks.

Such a waste of time. And for what? It's completely unnecessary and serves no purpose.
Art is not needed, especially in today's society where the intellect, personality, and face reigns supreme.

To be honest, the "artistic lifestyle" seems almost like a childish endeavour at this point, and I don't mean any disrespect, but it seems like the most serious artists (asides from guys who are legit conceptartists/illustrators/porn artists but they represent a very low % of dedicated lifters) are also the people with nothing else going on in their lives.
I know this was true with me, I was biggest and most serious about drawing when I was still in uni, working only 15 hours a week, and pretty much just plucking around all the time, going out, with no real life.
To all you kids out there who are getting sucked into the comerical art , try to stop yourself.
So long as you have and maintain decent facial aesthetics, you'll be fine.
Art just not worth it.

cheers

>what the hell do you mean it feels fake

A true artist would want to continually get better. There's always room to improve, draw every day, etc.

I just wanna get good. Good enough that I can draw without struggling--not wanting to push myself further feels limiting and it makes me feel like I'm getting into art for fake reasons(just to make comics) without wanting any of the real stuff(actually learning art and growing as an artist)

I think I just gotta suck it up and either do it or don't. Nice thread btw appreciate the replies

OP, go read Art and Fear
>>
>>2822960
Well OP, maybe it's time for you to create art not only for yourself, but also for other people.

And no need to draw from life all the time especially if you don't like it. That's fine, as long as you invest all your thought and effort into your art. Art is inspired by life, not a duplication of life. Don't let your inspiration become dictated by /ic/uck elitists who stare at naked men all day to fulfill their pointless pipe dreams, that would make your image fake.

Stay truthful to your own artistic vision. What kind of image is your ideal? That's the direction where you should improve your art upon. Being photorealistic is not the only existing ideal. It's not all about the skill, it's also the spirit and idiosyncrasy that everyone seeks. Being skillful is good, but skill without imagination is absolutely bland.
