As an digital illustrator, how do we actually make art?
All we're doing is trying to make aesthetically pleasing drawings.
I'm sick of it, I want to make things that are about the ideas that I have but I don't know what platform to share them on where people will care more about what I have to say than how my pictures look. (i want them to look good but that's beside the point of them)

lol why am i oddly turned on by this pic
anyway if your story is good and engaging, you don't have to be extremely good. As long as you're not stickfigure-tier.

Twitter, tumblr, instagram, pinterest, facebook and deviantart are the ones that come to my mind.
The most mainstream ones where normie stuff would fit like political cartoons or alike would be twitter or instagram.
More undeground stuff but that there is a fair share of normies that starts to blur into hobby-specialized territory, would be pinterest, where there is your fair share of normies and your fair share of basement dwelers.
If you want porn, tumblr. If you want to pander to normie like porn (like pin-ups), try famous porn pages where you can post your stuff. If you want to sell it, try this thread: https://warosu.org/ic/thread/S2744131
If you want you full blown basement dweller, go to deviant art or tumblr.

So is a story the best way to communicate an idea? Does that mean it has to be a comic book/animation? I've always thought this but then I got into trying to convey something with just one illustration.

story is one way and the one I am most familiar with, but it's not necessarily the best way. Depends what kind of ideas you're trying to convey. There are some art pieces that's interesting and engaging though not "technically skilled".
Tell us about your ideas anon.
