The typical ic artist
>unless you been drawing since highschool, Give up
>knows it's fundies and how to draw porn and space marines
>10,000 followers at most in life
>making it means making $30,000 a year off of fanart a year

Mike Judge
>some engineer that submitted doodles to a cartoon company in his 30s
>art style as well as stories are now known world wide
>makes over a million dollars a year off his creations
>ic still praises people that render dragons and mechs well
>>
>>2820970
OP got this figured out. We should all spend our life savings on lotteries.
>>
But maybe I don't wanna make cartoons.
>>
Your comparing two different things... But your right people on here are delusional.
>>
i'm working on fine art at the moment..(along with other non art things)...at least there is some infrastructure within art. I can submit to shows locally or across the country. I think my work is fairly unique in technique and medium so I could see myself possibly getting somewhere, who knows. And people like to passively look at art unlike a lot of things, so if nothing else i could at least sell some pretty nudes for a few bucks
>>

>>2820976
these.

People on here are mostly interested in concept art, illustration or other forms of art that require a high level of technical skill and are focused more on presenting a design or portraying a clients vision as opposed to telling their own story. 99% of American cartoons are objectively trash from an artistic stand point imo. The animation is shit and the drawings are middle school tier, the appeal is the writing and humor. No one cares about the art because that's not the point of these shows. I was watching a documentary on netflix recently about comic strips and a lot of established pros said that you didn't have to know how to draw to get your comic published in the paper, but you did have to know how to write. Well made art doesn't really appeal to the masses, at least not as much as a well written story. That's why interesting stories with shit art can take off while super generic stories with high quality art don't really get any viewership.

Mike Judge only started in his 30s? Damn that guys a beast
>>
>>2823586
But what about the fact that shows like family guy, simpsons, and beavis and butthead have a clear well defined style? A lot of ic's work fails in the creativity deparment where its either too realistic like a western comic or generic doll-face like japanese art.

Also, take a look at Seth Macfarland. I wont say that he knows his fundies, but hes someone that has been studying drawing since a kid and pursued it animation school. Plus, you're not taking in account the skill in drawing and writing of mangaka.

And a lot of concept artists just hide behind their amazing rendering skills from their initial sketch, which might not look so spectacular as standalone lineart.
>>
>>2823595
Its really some sort of miracle. A lot of his humor comes from just being a fan of class clowns at highschool and analyzing how hollywood presents a fake image of the grittiness of real life. If Beavis and Butthead came out today, it probably wouldn't have such an impact, same with Family Guy and South Park, but it actually scares me, how one guy, who goes from no tv writing practice at all, to being one of the best cartoon writers in the world just by living a pretty norm engineer/wageslave life. Im someone that doesn't believe in talent, but how the fuck do you explain that!?
>>
>>2820970
If you start late you're less likely to succeed.
Sure
That's atypical. Most have less.
Just making a living wage means you're making it on /ic/. Others have bigger goals- just not being a NEET is the bare minimum.

And, what is your point?
You really want to slack off for years and then pray to hit a jackpot. The guy was an engineer so he already was a draftsmen and had a career going.
>>
>>2823596
>And a lot of concept artists just hide behind their amazing rendering skills from their initial sketch, which might not look so spectacular as standalone lineart.

this is probably the biggest drawback to digital art. it's too easy to get sucked into using gimmicks instead of improving your skills
>>
>>2823596
>And a lot of concept artists just hide behind their amazing rendering skills from their initial sketch
>implying amazing rendering skills isn't what's in demand
>>
>>2820970
This was during a boom period in the post-Ren and Stimpy creator-driven cartoon market, as well as the animation industry in general. Also MTV had tons of money and was looking to fill its timeslots with anything they could get there hands on that seemed edgy. I'm not saying Mike Judge isn't talented, because he is, but he was also at the right place at the right time and his success story is pretty atypical. That type of media landscape isn't there anymore and the market is over-saturated with decent artists. I'm not saying this to be a sour-grapes /ic/ poster this is mostly based on having talked to people who have been in the movie and games industry for a while.

I'm not saying to give up but manage your expectations. Making comparisons who broke into the industry in the 90s isn't realistic because of how dynamic and expanding the industry was and what a shortage of talent there was at the time.
>>
>>2823623
I think making it would be having your original story and characters made world famous.... like touhou.

Mike wasn't exactly slacking off, he was transitioning between what he wanted to do. I believe he first wanted to do film, then drawing, then stand up comedy, then he did his wagecuck jobs, and then finally he went into cartoonist.

>>2823635
not saying its not high demand, but i why would anyone get joy from it? If you tried hard enough, anyone could learn render 75% as well as peopl like ruan jia, kr0n, or sakimichan. But how do you go about making a story with a unique style that becomes world wide famous? And dont say you have to get known first by publishing fan art because that may be true, that still does not excuse the fact of so many other mangaka and cartoonist making it off of oc donut steel stories.
>>
>>2823640
no. you make a good point. But I think theres a potential gap in any time period really, and the true artist has to know how to fill it. Like for instance, adventure time and Stephen Universe were cartoons with subpar but unique artwork that appealed to the boom of sjw and tumblr culture(not that thats a good thing). Patreon just came out, the first artists to take advantage of it made it big. You can say the same with investing in bitcoin. So, i guess what im saying is, dont limit mike to the 90s, think of him as someone that knew how to fill the gap. And the secret is, a lot of people aren't aware of the gap there is.

I think actually, 2020s cartoons is going to appeal to a culture of internet thats a backlash to sjws and generic calart faces, like how adventure time and SU were backlash to the stale 2000s caricature art and parody humor, so there will be less politically sensitive humor and better drawn faces in kids cartoons in the future. (no, im not saying this is necessary a good thing, because im not pol, just a prediction)
>>
>>2820970
It's not just the art itself what sells a cartoon. It's also what you do with it, and Mike judge had some damn good ideas that went well with his half assed style.
>>
>>2823651
I agree I think the upcoming 20s will be a definitive era for entertainment and media
>>
>>2823640

Weren't Ren and Stimpy and Beavis and Butthead concurrent with each other, relatively?
>>
>>2820970
he isn't known for being particularly good at drawing though

just look at that fucking picture you posted
>>
>>2823602
The person who comes along with life experience and general knowledge of culture, history etc might come up with a better show than the guy with refined drawing technique that knows the history of every version of mickey mouse.

>inb4 it's weeb, but...
Look at One Punch Man. One's original work is fucking horrendous, but the man knew how to tell a great story. That's why it got picked up and made into an instant classic.
>>
>>2823643
Ruanjia's rendering skills are lightyears ahead of Sakimichan and Kron.
>>
>>2824097
>Kron

Please tell me Kron is not Ilya Kuvshinov
>>
>>2824105
He is. What is your point?
>>
>>2820970
And today lil anon-chan realized that success is subjective.
>>
>>2824130

Quoted the wrong guy sorry

Point is anyway ... How can people put Ruanjia and Kron in the same league ...

Or Sakimichan with Kron...
>>
>>2824141
not the same leagues. but all three were memes on ic and have a huge ass following, maybe not kr0n,
>>
>>2823929
Does anyone have information on the original artist? Like, did he just start realising one punch man and it became a hit, or did he have to get popular first? Because, that would btfo a lot of fags who like to claim you need to be popular to release a hit.

So, does this mean that if i realease ch 1 2 and 3 of a story with subpar art, and it does not get a following, i should just create a new better story until i strike a hit?
>>
>>2824164
Yes. No. Maybe.
>>
>>2824164
persistence is crucial
If you're work isn't what you like or what people like, do more work.
>>
>>2824164
It's a bit of luck, but yeah. It has to sort of be relevant to the audience of today, like you can't be writing Shakespearean shit and expect it to be hit.

CAN YOU REPEAT THE QUESTION
>>
>>2820970
well this is what you get when the majority of ic users is made of 11 years old people physically and many more mentally.
