I'd like to start drawing mechs and other vehicles of that sort of /m/ aesthetic. What sort of fundamentals do I need to get gud at to do it well? Are there any good books on mecha to check out?

Check out SinixDesign's design lab on yt and Jake Parker's videos.
What you need to learn is perspective, both measured and freehand. Knowing animal anatomy and shape language helps a ton, too.
