I find myself spending 4-6 hours on a single drawing a lot of the time. And usually I don't particularly like the way it comes out most of the time anyways. Should I focus on producing more work instead of trying to make something look "perfect"?

I'll post an example of what many consider to be my best piece of work from last year. I actually do like this one, but I know it has some problems. And I haven't been able to really render or paint as well as I did in this image.

And this is something I did today just as a 20 minute doodle.

Oh, it's just a monster idea I had for this comic I've thought about doing.

it sounds like you need to take some time and loosen up. Try doing rough observational drawing. you're probably overthinking things, so just draw whatever's around you without thinking about whether or not it's good.

one of my professors started class with 20 minutes of this sort of drawing from some old national geographic magazines. it did wonders for everyone's drawing

No, it's just more of I haven't been able to replicate and build upon that level of quality. I sort of let it take a backseat to learning how to construct comic pages and to practice some animation again.
>>2811610
I'll try some of that then.
>>
>>2811434
No, you shouldn't. First off, try to make anything you draw or paint "read" in the early stages before going into detail.

if you produce 2000 low effort drawings, you would've wasted your time doing them.

if you hate the final outcome of your long drawings, it's probably cus you're over doing the strokes or line work. In most of your drawings, it helps to spend more time THINKING about your next stroke and ghosting the lines than just making lots of marks.

As long as that means you would still push yourself to do a little better each time, then definitely yes.

Skill is built on repetition.

I find that spending 20-40 hours on a single painting is very helpful. There are a lot of hurdles that can be overcome by trial and error

Eventually it doesn't take so long to get something to look right, and subsequent paintings in similar styles are quicker

Sloppy sketching pretty much only makes you better at sloppy sketching.. I used to do it for years
