Face features, such simplification doesn't work. Notice that shadow under nose and over upper lip look in both cases like those girls have moustaches. Also noses drawn like that look just bad. Last but not least, you can generally notice laziness there, with folds of skirt, with sloppy linework etc.

It's the same problem a lot of western artists who mix western and anime style end up having. They don't understand the simplification or the aesthetics that makes anime look appealing, and they just randomly mix and match features. This means you usually end up with the oversized eyes that you often see in anime, but combined with facial features that are far too detailed or too large, which makes the characters look ugly, old, wrinkly or just weird. You'll find the same shit in a lot of 80s fantasy art that tried to combine realism and cartoons.

The French and the Japanese have a very close history as far as art and animation go. France adopted anime before the rest of the western world, and they also worked together on various animation projects in the 70s and 80s.
While I wouldn't say Joel draws in an anime style, he's clearly inspired by it.

His fundamentals being solid is already a forgone conclusion given the quality of his work, what else are you suppose to comment on? When an artist reaches a certain level, aka a competent understanding of the fundamental building blocks, stylization is the only thing to comment on, which is only ever subjective. Disliking JJ's style isn't an invalid stance. Just like hating anime stylization isn't an invalid stance.

Granted, I guarantee the people hating on JJs faces probably think typical anime faces are more appealing even though JJ's faces actually read and look like they have dimension to them while most anime faces read as being flat as a board, with no real features whatsoever.

The people using these vague terms are probably just /a/utistic weebs. There is no real way of defending the flat and uninteresting faces used in most mainstream anime styles. You can argue it makes animating easier, which is valid, but it doesn't speak for illustrations themselves, only the animations. Most westerners who are inspired by anime at least have presence of mind to try to make their characters look remotely human in the face like JJ does. Great bodies, but terribly flat and boring faces with no real features. That's all most anime illustrations have to offer. All of them aren't like that, but most are and it's a style that's popular among otaku.
