Style copying has always been a taboo in this community but I hope people will answer

Lets say I DO want to adopt someones artstyle like pic related for example. can I one day obtain it by copying the animated short frame by frame? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcchrgJgryo
>>

Why do you have such bad taste?
>>
>>2809842
Learn your fundamentals and style will come to you.
>>
>>2809853

You mean MY style which might be ugly or the style I WANT to have like that vid?
>>
>>2809862
There is no "might be" with what your style becomes. After, and only after you get a solid foundation with the fundamentals you can take the parts of humans that you like/don't like and begin exaggerating and changing shit how you want to. Your style doesn't just materialize as some random thing, after you know your shit well enough you make it.

Now go practice and jesus christ get some taste, that shit is not what you want to be copying as ""your"" style

what happens when you're done with this experiment? you're back at square one. you'd be better off studying gestures and going to an animation school

this is a pretty good, funny animation. I usually hate this kind of stuff entirely too.

>I usually hate this kind of stuff entirely too.

What do you mean "this kind of stuff"?
>>
>>2810329
western "funny" cartoons like fairly odd parents and stuff.
>>
>>2809842
Copy people with nice fundamentals. This guy has nice fundamentals. When I say fundamentals, I mean form and posing, which not what many people here get.
>>
>>2810341

Forgot your pic? Because OPs pic is trash. Anyone with that artstyle is amateur
>>
>>2810344
you dont make art please stop
>>
If you want to learn stylized art, the best way is to trace it. Just keep tracing the guy's stuff until you get the hang of it, it's like riding a bike
>>
>>2810349

When you say "trace" do you mean to print out every frame and put a paper against it and draw?

Or do you mean I can trace by looking at the frames from a computer and drawing on a piece of paper?
>>
>>2810360
That fool is trolling. Do the underlying 3d forms then build it up with details, don't trace. The sketchy stuff in this animatic already shows how the characters are made out of tubes and spheres. You however have to balance 3d form with 2d intuition that gives the characters interesting silhouettes. It's a tricky balance but you get better at it the more you do it..

well i dont know. To me that style doesnt look bad. Then again, growing up i didnt think would ever be able to draw like the artists doing Marvel comics. It looked way too hard! So i copied an easier to draw style. The thing was, at that time i didnt know about manga (not that it would have helped, manga was like super expensive back then. I could have never afforded it) and i wasnt allowed to watch TV, so no copying cartoons either.

The only simple art style that i could copy (apart from Donald Duck) was this shit (image). Almost anything is more visually appealing than that shit.

I wasted years aping that trash style, before i finally tried to draw from life and copy from photographs.

Anyways, if you (OP) want to copy that style because it looks easier than some more realistic style. Just dont. Listen to the other commenters. But if that really is your favorite style, then i suppose theres no harm in trying to learn that style. At least it looks better than the art style i wasted my time on..

This desu. By looking at the art style I thought it would be generic CN-Nick-modern Disney Channel bullcrap but it was legitimately entertaining.

To be honest OP that cartoon was actually really entertaining.

Aside from the writing, the animation style looks really good in motion. It's gestural and reminds me of 1990s to early 2000s Cartoon Network. Not the fucking trash like Adventure Time we have invading those channels now.

Do practice your fundamentals but not because "style will come to you" but because you will be able to better understand HOW the artist got their style in the first place. Knowing the process helps you appreciate it more, and it will help you when you study styles you like.

Honestly, if you're just starting out there really is nothing bad with just mimicking and drawing things you like, because eventually you'll find what works best and you'll finally developed your "style"

TL;DR Don't just ape a style, but try to study it and see how the artist draws certain things. Do this while also studying fundamentals and you will eventually have your own style.

When it comes to stylized art i think there's more to it than just copying what you see verbatim and then parying that somehow you'll mentally inherit this person's style through that mechanical action alone.

The whole point of stylized art is that it's representative. It takes forms and objects that exist in a 3D space and translates them to a 2D form that either represents a shorthand of the forms present within said 3D object, or represents the concept of the object itself in a more symbolic manner (this is usually the case with graphic, "television" animation).

So when you study stylized art you should be thinking critically at the same time. Why did this artist choose to represent this form with this line? What emotional statement are they trying to make about a certain character via the shapes that they construct said character out of? etc. etc. etc. You should look into learning alot about character design because it makes it really easy to, in some part, understand the thought process behind the choices made within stylized art.

idk. you could be doing that shit already. just keep thinking and studying and worrking and it'll all come to you dude.

Couldn't agree more, anon.
Cancelled my schoolism membership, sold my tablet, and threw away all of my sketchbooks.

Such a waste of time. And for what? It's completely unnecessary and serves no purpose.
Art is not needed, especially in today's society where the intellect, personality, and face reigns supreme.

To be honest, the "artistic lifestyle" seems almost like a childish endeavour at this point, and I don't mean any disrespect, but it seems like the most serious artists (asides from guys who are legit conceptartists/illustrators/porn artists but they represent a very low % of dedicated lifters) are also the people with nothing else going on in their lives.
I know this was true with me, I was biggest and most serious about drawing when I was still in uni, working only 15 hours a week, and pretty much just plucking around all the time, going out, with no real life.
To all you kids out there who are getting sucked into the comerical art , try to stop yourself.
So long as you have and maintain decent facial aesthetics, you'll be fine.
Art just not worth it.

Cheers.

Go ahead and copy the style for a while. Keep up with your studies and whatnot and make understanding their stylistic choices part of your studies. Study their influences as well and try to keep yourself well rounded with other influences of your own. As you gain proficiency you'll get better at determining what you want to keep within your own work and eventually develop your own style that fits your needs and takes inspiration from the sources you wanted.
