Likeness vs. Understanding

When doing studies do both. Go for understanding (making your drawing look 3d/human) then add the likeness. Likeness is overall a lot easier than making something look human so understanding should be your main priority. I hope you understand what I mean, but I can explain further, if needed.

So... Basically, you're saying get the form down first or try to understand what forms the referenced artist was thinking in - and then after I block that in add details to make it look like the photo/artwork as much as possible?

Yes, if you were solely to go for likeness, you'd just be making a copy of your reference and you wouldn't really gain as much knowledge from copying something line for line.
