>We got two contemporary-art hacks to say they can't see the difference, so this is definitely how he painted it

The movie does make a good argument for the use of optics, however I suspect lots of the old masters did without them. We know for a fact that painters who focused on detail (similarly to vermeer) like Gerome didn't use them.

But they appeal to the authority of hockney and some other fuck who can hardly paint and are only called masters because any degree of objective recognition of skill or craftsmanship has been outlawed. These guys are clearly in way over their heads the whole time describing things they don't understand in vague terms.

hell at one point someone is like
>Look at that smooth gradient of light on the wall. it's 100% IMPOSSIBLE for ANYONE to paint such a smooth and specific gradient correctly.

NO YOU GODDAMN HACK-FUCK, IT'S IMPOSSIBLE FOR YOU. Any third-year student at a decent atelier could do it without unusual effort.

Coulda been an interesting documentary, but the whole "yeah we're obviously right, the old masters definitely did it this way" attitude it takes is cringeworthy and flat-fucking-wrong. It's become a part of the contemporary argument that modern hyperrealism-from-photo painters are in league or better than the masters of the 19th century.

Fuck this documentary.

I haven't watched many besides the Henry Darger one and honestly I thought that was pretty shit.

The painting out of focus stuff, the blue halo, the concave warping all seem pretty convincing evidence from within Vermeer's work. Then there's the fact that the mirror method works very well.

I mean, obviously it's vulgar to confuse technique with art, but it really does seem that these hairy middle americans discovered something about Vermeer's technique.

An atelier painter is almost as much of a hack as the guy in that documentary. Almost all of the current atelier system can produce students who can make very realistic works that impress normies and other atelier-taught painters without having to know much.

not a documentary but supposedly this is the first movie made only with paintings

lol, nice thug life ending. I love people like this that are simply honest. He doesn't give a shit about what he's supposed to say about this and that. I think that this freedom comes with the confidence that he knows better, or at least knows enough, to express his opinions without being afraid of jugdement.
