I am really liking your construction style. You have inspired the studies I will do tonight.
I went to Value Village and bought a couple photo books on animals. Tonight I am going to sketch them, but instead of copying the lines I see i am going to break them into shapes.
Even if they don't line up perfectly I will be learning construction via the blocks I break things into.
Then I will take the studied animals and do an original pose to test my knowledge so to speak.
Finally I will take the best and do water color studies.
Thank you for this inspiration! :D

If you want to critique my rendering quality, critique my digital art. The point of my pencil studies is to help me memorize more than it is to make them look pretty.
That being said, that wasn't a critique.
>>2803600
Great to hear I motivated someone! Do try to draw from life when you can. I bought a year pass to the zoo for this purpose.
Generally, I break down the form into chunky shapes to help me draw the correct angles and proportions of what i'm referencing. Way easier to draw studies when you see the subject as a bunch of lines, viewing each line in relation to each other to judge the correct proportions before you draw smaller details,
That original pose thing is exactly what I've been doing (trialing). You'll probably be disappointed going straight from referenced drawing to freehand, but notice your freehand is better than it was. Also helps greatly to push those referenced pieces into your mental library.
Good luck with the watercolours!

Actually conflicted by this one. he has shitty lines and good lines.
same with this guy(>>2800377 >>2800375)
The ones i pointed out earlier had the following;
overly darken areas(>>2803912) no consistency with line weight due to chicken scratching(>>2803262, >>2801779) and then you just generally have messy lines(>>2799400
>>2801455 >>2803793)
Keep it simple stupid, focus on your lines and less on being "painterly".
>>2804238
oh read the file name. its the same guy.
>>2804238
Well, thank you for taking the time to write a more detailed response.
Still confused on one point though: correct me if we have different information, but afaik chicken scratching consists in using lots of little lines where a continuous contour is needed, so... exactly in which areas of the examples you gave do you see that? Sure, there are unsteady lines, but I fail to see scratching.
>>2804238
Those were quick pet request sketches so your confusion is understandable. However, understand that not everyone that sketches is aiming to improve their sketching quality.
Particularly true when drawing from life: drawings of a moving animal will look like shit, but they are done to learn the life of the animal.

Cancelled your schoolism membership, sell your tablet, and throw away all of your sketchbooks.
Such a waste of time. And for what? It's completely unnecessary and serves no purpose.
Art is not needed, especially in today's society where the intellect, personality, and face reigns supreme.
To be honest, the "artistic lifestyle" seems almost like a childish endeavour at this point, and I don't mean any disrespect, but it seems like the most serious artists (asides from guys who are legit conceptartists/illustrators/porn artists but they represent a very low % of dedicated lifters) are also the people with nothing else going on in their lives.
I know this was true with me, I was biggest and most serious about drawing when I was still in uni, working only 15 hours a week, and pretty much just plucking around all the time, going out, with no real life.
To all you kids out there who are getting sucked into the comerical art , try to stop yourself.
So long as you have and maintain decent facial aesthetics, you'll be fine.
Art just not worth it.

Just practicing heads from ref so the ones from imagination will be better. The dude with beard looks weird on the photo. I promise it's not that fucked irl..
>>2822979
these are really nice, did you get to this level by studying loomis?
Kind of messy and low quality, but I like the outcome.
>>2822980
Ehmm not really. I have done the loomis exercises and I do think they are good. I see my mistakes very quickly due to atelier training so I know what looks off very fast.
Next to the atelier I looked through a lot of different head construction methods and took a little bit from each. I like the Reilly method the most and it added a lot to the way I think.
I think it's good to do some construction but not make a portrait entirely by constructing and using the same guides, like loomis. I usually construct where the eyes, nose, mouth are supposed to be and stuff like eyelids. It's very loose though. I want to get good at drawing faces from imagination though, that's way more difficult.
My advice is to just draw a lot of faces.

>>2823197
Ah I see. I will give you a little critique/advice. You should study construction and anatomy, but aside from that. The two ballshaped things on his belly, you can't clearly see what those are, it just looks weird. When you design, try designing for a purpose.
The thing I want to critique, you have very scratchy shadows/indications of detail, try thinking like. A line, it shows a big difference in value! So choose a lightsource, get rid of the lines where there would be less contrast, add some shadows where shadows are, when you add them fill them in nicely! No weird scratchy shadowy areas! Your drawings will look much better. Try imitating people like wesley burt when you are using pencil, it helps.

For the highlights on the face - a white gel pen. Forgot the exact type/brand, but a white gel pen allows you to make marks on top of pencil, which is good for drawing highlights on eyes.
For the white hatching background - a white prisma colored pencil (I think).
Having both the white pencil and pen allows you to be able to make marks wherever you need. Highly recommend using both!

Thought this would be the most appropriate thread to ask.
How can I avoid these lines that show up when I color with a pencil? They're like imprinted into the paper, I guess from my pencil before the ink. I use a standard mechanical pencil. Will real sketch pencils help avoid this?
>>2826657
you're pressing down to hard with the pencil and leaving grooves in the paper itself. draw lighter when sketching. i doubt switching pencils will help.
