Talk about markers, post nice marker illustrations, or your own.

Does anyone know what kind of paper O'Maley uses (or something similar)? His copic drawings look solid but they have a nice texture to them. Everything I've tried so far is either too streaky or too solid.

I got a bunch of copics for my birthday but I have no idea how to use them to their full potential.

Any good youtube videos about them?
All I can find are girls coloring in anime pics.

What kind of stuff do you want to draw with them? I've had a hard time finding good tutorials as well.

The best way to do it is probably just experimenting. Find an image that appeals to you with a nice color scheme (pic related for example) and try to replicate it with your copics to get a feel for how they layer and blend.

I use copics a lot. The only downside is how expensive they are, but once you get the refills its not so bad.
>>
>>2789326
looks like he just used instagram filters to make it look better than you think
>>
>>2789781
Ever though he used filters, you can see that it's less streaky than >>2789770 , where you can see almost every single marker stroke (no offence to that anon, it's just the paper). Either way, ignore that image, it's not the best example.

Just wondering if anyone has suggestions on paper that works well with copics? I guess i'm looking for something that looks toothy, but isn't absorbent, if that's possible.

Thanks for trying, but there's more than one type of marker paper.

I mean, If anyone's experimented, what's a good weight and gsm? Do you a favorite brand?
>>
I'm using shinhan art markers (should be fairly similar to copics I've heard) and canson smooth bristol 250g or canson marker paper. Marker paper is transparent (really nice for underlay), non-absorbent and the ink doesn't bleed through one bit. But the markers smudge lines drawn with fineliners and (some?) india ink on this paper. Pilot pens don't smudge.
Bristol paper allows for some fun with blending and mixing color. When you apply new layer of ink the old colors get pushed away and into the paper. I don't really know what is actually going on, but that's how it looks like. You can lighten colors this way or erase small mistakes with colorless marker. Though when the paper gets oversaturated with ink it creates ugly uneven splotches. You can use this to create some texture if done intentionally and in controlled fashion.

Posting my ugly animu art.

This is my favorite here. I use it all the time for illustrating designs for class. Has a great smooth feel to it and has just the right amount of absorbancy for blending.

Thanks for the info. But yeah, I think the paper I'm using is similar to yours, in terms of low saturation point. It saturates too quickly so you get those uneven splotches and the color displacement. I think I need to look for something thicker, (but I think it doesn't blend as well if it's thicker? idunno)

I already asked this in the artbook thread but maybe here's a better place to do it.

Anyone have "Creative Marker Techniques", "New Marker Techniques" or "Quick and Easy Marker Techniques" by Yoshiharu Shimizu? I would buy it from Amazon but the shipping costs are 3 times the cost of the book itself.

Anyone have it? Care to share? thanks in advance!
>>
I don't use markers, but for the people having issues with saturation and bleeding, have you considered watercolor paper?
>>
Does anyone have recs for non-alcohol based markers?
>>
>>2790100
Wouldn't watercolor paper just suck all the ink out of a copic? And probably make blending very difficult.
>>
>>2789363
thats watercolor though
>>
>>2790480
I know, but it would be easy to reproduce with copics, to get a feel for how the colours interact, and how to blend. I have trouble picking colors when i'm using copics, I tend to go crazy and use hues that are too strong, so Iooking at watercolors like like this shows me how to be a little more subtle.
>>
>>2790595
Just use watercolor. Or if that doesn't interest you, desaturate. Always desaturate.

Could you explain what you mean by desaturate?

I do use watercolors and I like them for specific projects, but I generally prefer copics.
For no reason other than I have fun using them. I like having more control. So i'm trying to figure out how to use them more effectively.

>Could you explain what you mean by desaturate?
It's a basic slider you can push up and down on just about any image editing software. Draw in copics, scan, desaturate the image in gimp or what-have-you, more water color look. Atleast I think that's what he's telling you, more power to you if you like using markers and their more markery look.

Ah, ok, if that's what he meant I already do that. I'm gunning to learn how to make an appealing image without having to throw it into something like gimp (which is what I use unfortunately)

The problem with taking that route is that it dulls/desaturates everything, including the elements that you want to keep sharp.

Using copics with the right paper you should be able to build a subtle overall "wash" as you would with watercolors then use deeper colors to create contrast in shadows, without the paper feathering or getting muddy, etc.

What would you recommend for Architectural/Landscape Visualization? I'm leaning heavily towards Chartpaks, mostly because most of my renderings tend to be 24"x18" or Larger.

-Mastering New Architectural Rendering Techniques by Matsubara
-Presentation Techniques by Dick Powell

Can someone here enlighten me on what the point is of copic have an A, B, C, D and E set of 72 colors? Like, looking at each one, none of them seem so deficient in anything. Is there some kind of theme, or consistent color palette? If one is not enough what 2 would you recommend a person buy that compliment each other best while covering all the bases? Why buy one over another? What kind of madmen buy all of them?
>>
>>2794478
Copics are addicting. 72 x 4 = 368 or however many copics there are. In theory to have them all you can collect them by set. I wouldn't recommend that. Personally, I built my collection off of 12 piece sets and then got other colors to compliment as i went along. I currently have around 220 markers and just bought a bunch of refills for the ones that I have that I use a lot of (skin tones mostly). Some I've had for four years.

This should help explain the Copic naming convention a little. Basically, the Letter(s) indicate the overall color group, while the numbers specifically reference the color and shade.

>On Copics
As someone who has used, collected, purchased and repurchased markers for both hobbyist and professional pursuits, know that certain marker brands are better suited to specific applications. Strengths/Weaknesses and all that.

Copics (especially the brush-tipped 'Sketch' line) are great for small-to-medium projects that involve a lot of fine detail with very organic graduation and variation of color. Because they are a system, all kinds of peripheral materials such as airbrushes, gouache & papers are available and work great with them.

Prismacolors are the most readily-available and cheapest option, and work as a great general-purpose markers for learning and getting used to the medium, and they do last longer than copics.

Chartpak AD markers last 100 years, but have the worst bleed of any of the three and require a pretty advanced understanding of technique to master. I've found them most useful in large projects (Architectural Rendering/Industrial & Commercial Illustration), using Bienfang marker paper as >>2789921 mentioned. Chartpak's also seem to work the best with other media, such as gouache & pastels, but that could just be because I've used more Chartpak than anything else.

As soon as I have time, I'd like to scan one or two of my marker technique books. Unfortunately, none of them are really "General" technique, but rather offer general techniques as related to a specific industry such as Architecture or Industrial Design. Which are you guys more interested in?

Also, feel free to ask any marker-related questions.

This one's sloppy but I'm pretty fond of it, thanks for posting.

The first two you shared from that artist are weak though. I think the white backgrounds with lazy color smudges really kill them (but it looks like the artist just gets bored and gives up when coloring anything other than face/tits/stomach).

I only mention this because I see it happening a lot with copics. They seem to be great for drawing figures, clothing, and hardsurface, but when it comes to environments and landscapes, everything just seems to go to hell.

I get the feeling that copics are more successful when the background is subtle and intentional (insinuating space without coloring everything) or when the page is almost completely taken up by figures. Pic related.

Maybe anon's architectural rendering books can save us from the scourge of crap backgrounds.
