Is there a better easier book about descriptive geometry?

Maybe. But I would advise you to try the exercises as best you can. You may learn a thing or two instead of twiddling your thumbs looking for a shortcut.
You could try working through Ernest R. Norling's, Perspective Made Easy and then make your way back How to Draw.

t. Scott Robertson
If you want something to get your feet wet before How to Draw, read through Fun with Pencil by Loomis. Though there probably isn't a better book that goes over what How to Draw does.
You might also try the How to Draw Cars the Hotwheel Way, which is also by Scott Robertson and it simplifies some things.
If you're having difficulty with that book it's most likely because you haven't put enough time into developing a rudimentary understanding of perspective first. If that isn't the case and you're still having a hard time following then I recommend you check out his video(s) on form drawing.
There's been a nice book available for almost a hundred years.

Not as a replacement, more of a stepping stone.

Oh yeah I can definitely agree with that
