I decided to try something different with commissions from artists, after having some bad results from lost in translation explanations, I figure i'd find images where the pose or expression matched what i had in mind for the character and send this to artists for commissions removing any confusion about what was required.
Before going into custom characters i wanted to find out how artists would manage using a RL reference for more and more elements of a drawing and will post the results from the first artist.
I'd like some feedback and an explanation on the limits/ pros and cons of using detailed references for 2D art from an artists perspective. ie the reference providing 80-90% of information/ details needed for the result.
I'm on the 3D side of things and rely on 2D artists for concepts etc so what was important for me was creating a *model sheet* if you will to guide the 2D artist by the nose vs leaving much to their devices. No offence.
Image 1 reference, Wanted the artist to capture the light charm the woman has in his style.
Image 2
Image 2 reference, This image has allot going for it, Wanted to see if the artist could capture the look and feel with the transition. The 4th frame was meh 1st appealing by itself and feels separate from the rest others okay.

Image 3 v1
Image 3 reference. This image had a fun feel to it, More fun than lewd an interesting blend. The artists work took a bit too much of the edge off than i expected giving a blander result.
Image 3 v2 an alt for the hell of it.
Image 3 v3 last alt to see how far a change would go.
That's it for now, I'm commissioning more works from various artists but want to know from Artists if this is even a good thing, Are you guys just tracing and trying to match details in a frustrating way when the commissioner could have just ran it through a sketch function in Photoshop or something for the same result?
Is there value in this, How it is from the perspective of the other side?

hattonslayden does this exact thing and charges $70 b&w 2 characters. This only works when you are doing porn commissions as you're typically dealing with the lowest common denominator of people. Don't expect to be able to charge much though, developing your style into something that can't be reproduced and is aesthetically pleasing is when you can start making bank.

The art that you're posting here has a lot of shadow, form and texture removed, especially from the faces. Furthermore, the artist is only paying attention to the light and shadow in certain areas and omitting it from others entirely. That's lending a feeling of the uncanny valley in these images, and is also likely to remove any of the intent of the original images you're sending.
As for sending artists reference to remove any doubt of what they're supposed to deliver, that's fine, but you should make sure to tell the artists specifically what you're looking for from the source material and leave them free to interpret it. In the case of the first image, I think that both you and the artist failed to identify where the "light charm" of the woman originates from. It's not her voluptuous figure, but the slight smile and the way the light casts a shadow across her face from her hair. The artist paid no attention to her expression and changed the light source just enough above her neck to render her bland and devoid of life.
Since you're paying money for this stuff, begin the agreement by stating that you intend to have some editorial oversight on the work before it's delivered. The artist should show you a minimum of two in-progress images so that you can identify what needs attention before the piece is final. If you don't do this, then you're going to keep paying money for work that you're unhappy with.

I didn't notice that about the light for the first image, Very good point thanks.
It's an ongoing experiment so i tried my best not to dictate too much bar the pose/ expressions etc but again i see what you mean.
Anyone has examples of 2D ifying RL images to superior results?
