I never said it was entirely up to personal opinion. And what you're saying reinforces my point; you can have good composition and nice use of colour in an abstract piece which will still look nice without having any realism at all. Obviously realism does correlate with skill, however, its not a direct correlation. Why do you think that extremely realistic artists started falling off when photography was invented? The demand for realistic depictions had lowered drastically so now artists can focus on expressing more abstract ideas and forms instead of grinding for hours on end to perfect the realism of a hand in their painting or some shit. The problem is that because of the accessibility of art to everyone there is a ton of shitters who hide behind "Muh abstraction" and as a result a lot of people label unrealistic art as straight up bad, which kinda sucks.
