Wait, is that from art? I currently make about $90-100k a quarter but it's off ad revenue from apps I've developed, so it's predicated to peter off in upcoming years - I'd gladly take half of that if I could do it solely making art.
>>
>>2780139
What kind of apps? Not art related apps?
>>
>>2780141
Apps that range from puzzle games to shopping experiences. Basically I worked for 'free' for start-ups, in exchange for partial ownership of the app/ad revenue.

I picked up art five years ago, I started at zero, and I mean, dead zero. I've made some great progress, but I'm still very much an amateur. I have this strong desire to get good at this hobby.
>Want to start a patreon?
Man, I absolutely detest paywalling content. I've only got seven hundred followers anyways. Maybe in another five years of improvement. I'd have to break 50k/year to even think about quitting my day job.
>Hate furries?
Lol no. There's a handful of individuals I'll probably murder as time goes on, but furries in general? Nah.
>>
>>2779918
>Are you making it?
Maybe? I have a lot of demand for my work but ironically the financial issues I've built up while leading up to this point that would go away if I could get the work done have been standing in the way of me doing more.
>Have a story?
Nothing in particular I guess. I've been trudging through the sludge slowly making more and more progress each year, gaining more pro work and interest as I go.
>Want to start a patreon?
Yeah or something. I want to do a side thing where I make porn comics and upload them a page a day or something like that, and let people donate for support rather than taking direct requests or commissions.
>Hate furries?
Nah, I draw some fur stuff. I wish a lot of them weren't as clingy as they are though.
>>
Why do so many of you hate furries when they are some of the only people around willing to regularly commission art?

Autism and meme posting. Back in the "golden" days on 4chan it was okay because it was cool and memey to hate furfags, but now that the meme died, there's actually no reason to hate someone that likes talking/standing animals.

And yeah.. Also they give a shitton of $$$ to us
>>
>>2781188
If your heart isn't in it, it isn't the easy money it was. Prices have changed and you have to be visible for years and damn near do it full-time to be able to charge what the popufurs do for the same quality of work. Unless you do fetish porn.

>>

Define "page", please.

Unless it's some c&h tier artstyle, doing 22 pages a month on your own sounds pretty bad
>>
>>2781704
>someone that likes talking/standing animals
That is not what furries are.
I love cartoons with antropomorphised animals, and I like drawing them, that does not make me a furry.

Furries are people who invent fursonas for themselves and commit to RPing 24/7. That is why they are cash cows, they do whatever they cam to immerse themselves in their fantasies.
>>
>>2781731
I made a Furaffinity and started out with a few fetish things (like gay fat fetish) but stopped after the first month cause I wasn't a fan. Only done a couple fetish commissions.
Now I have a gallery of pretty vanilla bara and am almost at 700 followers (I've had the account for 4 months with around ~25 submissions).
I make 60-80 per commission and have been raising prices by $10 every few weeks. Hopefully will be at $90 by the time I get 1k followers
>>
>>2781911

That's pretty much how it goes when a relatively skilled artist decides to step into the furry arena.

700 followers in 4 months is actually pretty insane though. Maybe I've been doing it wrong all along focusing on straight stuff. I think there's a huuuge audience willing and able to throw shekels at people drawing hardcore gay bara and all kinds of bara related fetishes.
>>
>>2781920
thats not that much, I think I got 250ish in the past week or so. It slows down when you get past 10k watches from my experience (currently around 17k). Though people who are better than me have blown past me into 20-30k pretty fast. You don't have to be that good to be a 'top' account on fa, just post a lot. At the point I'm at I can do all the commissions I can handle, which is great. full time jobbu.
>>
>Are you making it?
Yes. about $1800-$2500+ a month
Pics range from $50-$150 with 4-6 hour turn overs.
>Have a story?
I draw porn, and have no rules.
>Want to start a patreon?
I did
>Hate furries?
They literally keep me alive. Regular porn pays peanuts. Furries pay well. However, they're pretty awful people in general. Some are polite, but they tend to be very clingy, and looking for a friend. That only leads to "give me a discount, we're pals!"
So I tend to stay 100% professional and don't get close.
>>
>>2781940

really? wow... what am i doing wrong. do i just suck? i gain maybe 500 followers in 6 months. is there a time of day when i should be posting? do i draw too vanilla art? i've noticed the people doing 'normal' art don't get the same attention as fetishists and gay yiff artists.
>>
>>2779918
>Are you making it?
Not artwise, I got computer/it work that earns me a very decent living
>Have a story?
Yeah, I didn't draw much until I opened up a tumblr, then it put me into a routine into posting a pic every few days. I got people asking me for commissions but, I don't know, I just don't feel like I'm worth it to take money for my shitty art. Currently have 1400 followers on tumblr, account just turned 1 year old.
>Want to start a patreon?
Soon. I don't know what the fuck to offer, so maybe just use it for a tip jar.
>Hate furries?
The yiffers, people that are way too into it. Furry art is a-ok.
>>
>>2781920
>>2781940
Is that you, gabekun?

I haven't posted much for a couple months, though i posted a r34 pic yesterday and got 100 watchers over night. I think it got reposted on some blog. If I had more time I think I could probably build a bigger following.

I'm at a semi pro level with my real art and do freelance illustration/concept work/assets, but haven't been making enough to live off of yet. Doing furry on an alt account instead of getting a part time job has been really convenient.

Here's a PSA for those of you who are serious about making a living with art and are in denial about the furry market.

Anon A) and Anon B) are exactly the same. All comparable variables equal, except for the fact that A) is ok with doing furries and B) religiously objects to ever doing furry art.

Anon A) starts doing furry art on the side, to make a little money while he builds his serious freelance career. Anon B) gets straight into building his serious freelance career.

Anon A) starts a patreon too, and starts slowly building a fanbase and following for his furry work. Anon B) does not.

...fast forward 5 years...

Anon A) has a patreon pulling 3k a month from loyal furfag followers. To keep them happy he has to do around 2-3 pics a month, and a small batch of sketches and alternative pictures. This takes him 2-3 days total, assuming 10 hours of work per day. So we can estimate that investing in a furry sidegig has now put him at a spot where he makes 3k a month with 25 hours of work. 120$ an hour. Not fantastic pay by freelance standards, but still pretty damn respectable.

Anon B) has his serious career going, and lets assume it's going a little better than Anon A)'s because he had more time to invest into it.

Now ask yourself... who is ahead? I'd argue that anon A), having diversified his income and built a following of loyal autist direct-consumers is significantly ahead in the game. Maybe not quite as happy, but there's more stability in his diversified income. And clearly I'm not the only one who thinks like this, looking at some of the top furry adult artists you can almost tell which digital painter is hiding behind the alias.
>>
>>2782053
You are delusional on multiple levels.
>>
>>2782053
That's the most one-sided example I have ever read.
You just straight up ignore the fact that Anon B also builds a fanbase.
But you know, they are not furries but people that actually share his interest.
The only difference between the two Anons in you example is that Anon A is a cash grabbing whore who is selling himself out for more shekels.
>>
>>2782153
>>2782156

the point anon is making is that it's better to be making 10k via 5 different 'branches' each of which generate 2k a month, than to be making 10k via one branch which generates 10k. i think. it lowers risk. diversification of income is something that literally every freelancer on the face of earth talks about.

>Are you making it?
I live with my parents and currently going to community college. Certainly not making any money except from odd jobs from family. No money's been made with my art yet.
>Have a story?
Not really. Just a hobbyist with ADD that's not very dedicated with his hobby. I want to get to the point where I can get a decent job but can also make a decent penny on the side with art. Animation and comics have kinda been a childhood dream that wavered off since I don't feel like I have a story to tell to people.
>Patreon?
I'm not even close enough in skill to be legitimately worthy of that.
>Hate furries?
For the most part, yeah. I do know it's a market that's easy to tap into and make some decent cash. I just don't want to sacrifice my character or potential reputation to take advantage of that though.
>>
>Are you making it?
I used to do commissions for around $30/hr four years ago before I stopped drawing, but it wasn't a big source of income. I wasn't that popular, even though I had a loyal base of customers.

>Have a story?
I stopped drawing for four years, got back into it recently. I've saved a good sum of money so I am planning on neeting it out for a while and focus on art instead.

>Want to start a patreon?
Eventually. I'll have to learn how to market myself first.
>>
>>2779918
>Are you making it?
Made $4 this year after my art was stolen, and I was paid back for what sold.

>Have a story?

>Want to start a patreon?
Probably not. Kickstarter might be more applicable.

>Hate furries?
Haven't met any.
>>
>>2782210
No, the point he was making is hurr durr doing furry porn is actually smart you guise, whike also pretending you can have a loyal following with 2 pictures a month, and that pros do furry art.

Diversification has nothing to do with furry shit. In fact, you need to commit to furries to reap any real benefits, which is the opposite of diversification.

I finally have the time to study something other than R/SQL and related languages in my spare time and it feels good. The learning curve for art isn't what anons make it out to be. It's steeper than other things I've done, but the results you get as you go along 'work' even though they're shit, unlike programming or analytics. .

Not him, but it is. At the end of the day, you're selling a chemical release. On a biological level, it's not any different from selling expensive food at a restaurant. You're paying for the flavor quality to get an endorphin release.

Also, I don't know about you, but getting up at 2:00pm, not having to wear a shitty uniform/abide by a dress code, being your own boss, using drugs if you want, and not having to spend hours in traffic is awesome.

And it's an interesting job too. I've gotten laid just by being a well known porn artist.

Stay salty, wage cuck
>>
Just curious, did any of you guys try to make and sell stock photos? If you make some generic shit it's a nice and steady income, it's less than commissions, but then you only make it once and it earns you money constantly.

I'm pretty horrible at vectors, but I did some sketches and one guy turned them into vectors for me. I uploaded them to shutterstock and I'll get a 100$ from there every now and then, and it's just a handfull of pictures.

If you know how to make vectors and you're willing to spend some time making that, plus you have a good idea on what would people buy, I'm guessing you could make a couple hundred $ every month.

You'd have to spend a lot of time building your portfolio to make it a full time thing, but hey, it's not like you have anything better to do.
>>
>>2784101

Fuck, I meant stock illustrations, not photos, obviously.
>>
>>2784101
Hos easy is it to get into this?
>>
>>2784105

Really easy? I think you just have to have 10 vectors with clean, closed lines (all the info is at shutterstock guidelines), you send them over, if they're okay then you're good to upload whatever you want, whenever you want.

Basically you have to know how to make vectors and then you have to figure out what would people buy. I made most of my money on a set of chinese zodiac signs and a bunch of cartoony purses.

I've thought about it. But mostly buying myself a camera and taking my own reference material then selling it on the net to pay back my camera. Haven't done it yet. I've seen a friend pay back his camera by taking pictures of people at bars so I know it's possible.
>>
>>2784160

That's how I started - I have a culinary blog so I uploaded some food pictures. Then I realized my food pictures are not good enough, there are people way better than I am. So I took a different path and took some pictures of obscure things that are just rare on stocks. I have sold a lot of pictures of a wolf skull, for some reason.

I don't know about pictures with people though. They always require a written permission of the person who is on the photo.
>>
>>2784168

>Hate furries?

I hate that they never ask for a SFW commission of their character doing something, it's always fetish related and they all ask for the same thing so I stress trying to figure out how to draw the same scenario a different way five or more times. Then I hope they accept it and not see the other ones and demand I redraw it so it's different enough. Some of those fuckers dictated me down to the last stroke, too.

Can't believe I have to write the word "commission" again. But I'm gonna suck it up for the good of my car.
