I mooched off this art for such a long time, now i am giving back. Dumping this fellows art. no idea what his name is.
Beksinski. He's practically a meme.

on here, yeah i am sure.
This has to be a joke. He is a meme because of how well known and overposted his work is. Why are you posting if you just started lurking? And why are you posting a bunch of well known works by a well known artist on a board mainly for critique and advice?
>REEEEEEEEEE
This is by Zdzisław Beksiński.
He's actually a pretty interesting artist.
>he was a very average normal man who painted horrid figures and landscapes.
>he documented all of his progress from sketch to finished work.
>none of his paintings have titles. nor explanations.
>he once burned hundreds of his own paintings because
he said some were not good enough. and some were simply to personal to be shared with the world.
>he was murdered by his caretakers son because he refused to let him borrow $100.
pretty cool guy, Even if he is just a meme.

I just don't get how he made his pictures.
With no formal training, how did he make fantasy landscapes with figures in? This was hard core even in the days of classical painting.

He was very intelligent and meticulous with a great eye for painting.
If you watch his video diaries you can actually kinda see his process even though it never actually shows him painting. it does give you an idea of how he built these figures up and came up with the subjects.
he calls them "visions"

Beksinki fanboy here, I studied his stuff quite a bit and what I've found out is that he did tons of thumbnails and studies before starting a painting. He generally made an acrylic underpainting and used cheap oil paints for the block-in, then worked quite a long time on each painting.
His method was very non-linear, as he did rework the paintings (as in, completely re-painting shit over) if he felt like it didn't work. I'd say his work method was even amateurish at times, as he very rarely went from point A to point B. Lots of messy exploration and repainting.
He complained in a video that he "licked" the paintings too much (oil painting jargon for blending stuff too much and destroying brush strokes). This thing seems to have been one of the major forces that pushed him toward abstract expressionsim later in his life. You can see his later paintings still have amazing form but they're mostly non-figurative.
His signature characteristic is his fucking fantastic grasp of scale, empty space and atmospheric perspective and that's what makes the paintings so eerie. Which is also why his imitators fail so pathetically when they go "rawr, monstahrs!" No you idiots, can't you see that even his abstract paintings still scream Beskinski?
I fucking love Beksinski, it's like I have a personal connection with his work. My nightmares till year 2004 looked like his paintings (I discovered him only a few years ago) and it still freaks me out, it's like someone painted what I had n my head at the time, creatures, landcapes and everything. Had a dream exactly like pic related once.

His photography is not that amazing.
late in his life he became obsessed with photoshop and fucked around with photography and photoshop. and most of it isn't that remarkable, especially compared to his paintings. but he truly was just making art for himself, to satisfy himself and no one else.
