Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.
TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

I wasn't going to post this because it's babby's first drawing but I really like how it turned out. I was surprised how difficult it was in parts though, I nearly panicked when I got to the more detailed sections.
Are upside-down drawings worth doing regularly for a beginner and if so what kinds of pictures would be appropriate?
>>2773034
can you provide some examples of things. i dont really "draw things" i just practise exercises.

this is my first watercolor. I painted the girl first, then took a picture of her, then painted based off of the photo.

It's good that Artist is developing a deep understanding of a form like that; there's very little you can't begin to construct with the bare-bones model as boxes

i think it might not be developing that understanding. if you just mindlessly ruler to the vanishing points then surely it doesnt do much?

hi i made this this morning,it's my first try on krita my first try on """"digital painting""""" i am completly open for critiques of every type
serious question here.
how to make paintings from life looks like the Old Masters? I mean when I look at nowadays painting, it looks like something from Photoshop instant-effect plugins. What actually makes the Old Masters painting looks like "painting", at the same time, it looks so alive? Was it that era clothing? Or maybe the fashion?
similar question to >>2773304
but how do i get started painting? what are the fundamentals to learn when im trying to paint faces and figures?
>>2773304
The Renaissance technique was to "build up" colours from various constituents in thin, transparent washes. Most old master's paintings have that obsolete blending because they were very patient in securing many transparent glazes over the surface of the canvas, and paying attention to details they wanted to include at later stages of the layering.
They probably never used black; it might just be that the paintings originally had very high vibrance and by natural corrosion of the pigments it developed into brown, but nonetheless: if you're aiming for that sort of effect, try making all of your darker values not using a black colour, but by compiling red and a dark blue
>>2773244 speaking
I can't break out of symbol drawing completely and make very screwy proportions in most of my life studies; is there a way in which I can avoid this? Thank you in advance
Would really appreciate a Critique.
>>2773425
Nono that's good; well done. 3d but not to a degree greater than actual reality
There's poor hatching registry in relation to one another; if you want to do this in a study just in order to move fast and place some values then maybe it's not a problem, but if you wanted visual appeal then it does look a bit messy
I think the face and shoulders look a bit masculine because of all the sharp, non-sinuous edges.
Doodling is fun but I want to start drawing more realistic looking stuff
>>2773508
I'd like to let you know, from where I stand now: drawing more realistic stuff will be a painful journey to go on; it's not extreme amounts of unbearable mental trauma but it's frustrating and sometimes upsetting. If you want to pursue it you ought to consider having a strong motivational force at your back
>>2773153
>>2773061
tahts the idea
>>2773165
agreed, still wrapping my head around the concept of blocking in (and then still i'd shift values around in the sense that i didnt trust my own block-in)
>>2773448
The values are merging into one another (aside from the fact that your value range is so minimal). Quite unappealing.
>>2773408
If I were you I'd start with basic still life paintings. That way you get an idea of form and how to paint "into" the canvas. Human faces are too complex for something to start with.
>>2773535
Hmm idk maybe not then lol, I might just like the idea of it, but I'm still open to at least picking up a few things and not taking it vey seriously. drawing is just something to do when I'm bored but I want to get into making interesting stuff and eventually hand drawn album covers or crude posters/etc
>>2773884
I'd like to be able to create my own renditions of already existing fictional characters by the end of 2017. Is this a feasible goal if I stick with Loomis and practice drawing from real life?

>>2774056
shit you caught me, never. i basically learned gesture, then never used it. thats crazy that a lack of gesture can make a difference in how pose feels. ill try redrawing with gesture and see if it helps
Posting part of my portfolio. Am I any good?
^Sorry for poor image quality.
alright is this one looking any better
>>2774097
yes it is nigger, nice hand dodge
>>2774097
You haven't done gesture before. You think implementing it once and redrawing (however that'd work) would fix it. In reality, gesture is an entirely other beast on its own that takes weeks (if not months) to secure the core concept in your mind.
Not to mention the flat pose (regardless of pose dynamicism), chickenscratch, incorrect anatomy/proportion, and lack of 3D understanding.
You have a long way to go, and there's no other time to start than now:
Drawabox.com is a pretty good resource (regardless of what people say about it's author or subject matter) that is tailor-made for beginners to start grasping the fundamentals and what they mean.
A lot of people recommend Proko's gesture series as a good starting point but I think Hampton in his book (Figure Drawing Design and Invention) gives an approach to anatomy that is less daunting and a little more concise (and not as broad as Proko).

>>2774277
Maybe this isn't your main priority right now, but later you should definitely look into colour theory. It looks very ugly when your shadows/highlights are just a darker/lighter version of the original colour. If you change them to a different tone your paintings will be much less gray and lifeless.
Can anyone recommend some other sources that teach the same things as drawabox, that can be found on CGpeers? Form and all that stuff. I've done the first parts of drawabox but somehow I can't bring myself to trust the guy, and I don't feel I have learned a lot so I would like to try a different teacher.

I don't really 'get' the "Pure Contour Drawing" (drawing the wrinkles in your hand while not looking at the paper) in DotRSotB and Edwards explanation didn't really help.
Is it useful? It seems like it could be a handy warm-up exercise if it is but I found myself going over bits that I had already done because I couldn't find enough wrinkles to draw in the five minutes.

Hey guys
What is the best way to show art I've been doing here if I'm drawing on physical paper?
Take picture with my phone? Or is there a better way?
>>2774963
The best way is to use a scanner but I just use my phone.
>>2774948
like redraw it? the problem is im stupid, like i cant see the mistakes with this one. so if i redrew it id still just mess it up. i mean, i see a couple little things wrong with anatomy/construction like the hangarm shouldnt bend like that and the shoulder is 'in' to high and ive fixed that but i cant really see anything else except the torso might be a bit too long
>>2774956
well i know i suck, see above. i literally have a hard time seeing mistakes. i think most my mistakes are small?
with pic related i can confirm the torso bit, but thats an easy fix, just chop in half and slide her up or down. i literally cant see anything else though, every thing fits. elbows to navel, proper head sizes (except for the torso bit), similar porportions of limbs with foreshortening as needed (arm going on back of sofa, upper leg of leg hanging off). the torso is twisted in a way that makes since and the perspective seems right
>>2774960
>>2774960
yeah i did. can i chose my own? i dont like those. pic is the one i have in mind
>>2774967
It's a very boring angle, the pose is kind of stiff and the colours are horrible. So yeah working on your fundamentals would be a good idea. If you do so you'll see yourself what's wrong with your image in a couple of months or so.
>>2774971
Sure. That's an incredibly ugly photo but that doesn't really matter. Go for it.
>>2774971
imo you should choose one with a wider range in values and do it in greyscale
>>2774976
im trying simpler poses because they're retard friendly. i cant even mange things closer the to above pic. pic related. whats wrong with that ref, you sound like a hater desu, also, i just picked colors from mine and that ref, and they are pretty similar, though ill acknowledge i dont have as much variety in my and i did concede earlier that i need to work on color theory
but the anatomy/contruction/ proportion mistakes are all minor?
anyways ill stop dragging this out. ill finish that and go do drawabox and keys
Can someone help me?
I can only draw studies upside down I am incapable of looking at right right side up, not to say I am skilled, rather it seems like I can tackle it upside down but when you show me right side up I get anxious and draw from what I think it should be.
>>2774993
he means stop drawing figures because your pre-fundamental fundamental skills are at this point non-existent
>you sound like a hater
is this the attitude of someone who hasn't improved in like half a year lmao
>>2774993
There are watermarks all over the photo, she looks incredibly photoshopped and the light doesn't make it a very good reference. Just telling you so that you might be able to find better ones in the future. But yeah, do that.

>>2775001
Honestly everyone struggles with this in the very beginning. Have you read DOTRSOTB and Keys? If not, do so, otherwise just keep practicing. At some point something will probably click and you will realize how to start seeing the photo not as a combination of symbols but for what it really is, and be able to copy that down. Maybe try something dramatically lit like this, where you can't properly see the features and symbol draw them?
>>2775003
well i improved at stuff other than figure from imagination. i posted them above. i only said he was hater cause he said "boring pose" and "ugly ref" and the colors technically more correct than not but he said those are ugly too. like all opinion stuff.

Yes; everyone has to do it; it's the hurdle before Observation and Sight. It's not that important, but it can make your drawing look messy. Here's a fantasy vidya sword thing I drew to try and acquaint myself with illustrator. I think I fucked up on the shading quite a bit though.
>>2775193
I forgot to post the image
>>2775195
Nice, I like it. What other kind of work do you do?
>>2775197
Not much else. I like unrealistic fantasy stuff, but I've only ever really drawn weapons. I'm trying to ease my way into more "living" drawings, like monsters and robots and stuff, but truth be told, I just can't get the proportions right compared to what's in my head.
This little guy (the future owner of one of those horn designs up above) is one of the first few biological things I've drawn. The idea is that his tongue is a razor-sharp blade, and he can be wielded by someone when he sticks his tongue out.
>>2775195
I like the idea, but put that in black and white mode and see how shitty your values are. I can barely see shit. Push for darker darks and lighter lights.
>>2775180

>>2775215
Yeah, finding the right color for everything was a huge pain in the ass, considering the layering of different levels of transparency. I'd find a color that looked right at 100% opacity, but I'd kick that down to 70% and it would looked like shit, so I'd have to mix and match colors until I eventually found something that worked. I definitely should have been a bit more drastic with how I shaded the different planes though.

It's better that we fail many times before achieving our goal. Without it: every victory of our intentions would be tremendously shallow. It's when we're feeling the most disheartened that we progress the most
Still a beginner working through the Edwards book, and going to go through the rest of the sticky. But also been copying stuff from youtube tutorials just to get an idea of the process and for fun.
Just curious as to why this turned out so bad even after basically copying it step by step. The original looked nice and painterly and my copy, as you can see, looks like she's a drug addict with some kind of skin disease.
I'm guessing the primary problem is that I haven't studied light, value and color theory yet, and I'm working my way towards that for sure. But I'm wondering if this isn't also partly an issue of simply sucking at using Photoshop as well. I had trouble basically just replicating a lot of the brush strokes and blending techniques he seemed to be using. Is it generally necessary to study photoshop tutorials at some point, or will all of those blending and color techniques come naturally by just practicing the fundamentals?

Draw thread is the advised place to go.
>>2775634
Try posting it in the /draw/ thread; if only that you'll get more rounded critiques from artists that have fashioned themselves a good visual language
tfw a bunch of people way worse than you post in the /draw/ thread and a bunch of people way better than you post in the /beg/ thread
really confusing feeling desu

>>2775087
It looks much better than your figures drawn from imagination. Maybe keys to drawing wouldn't help you a lot right now, but I would still recommend quickly running through the first chapters to make sure you understand the basic concepts of it. After that you should start working with form, do drawabox and maybe try Peter Han's dynamic sketching videos.
>>2775556
Yeah this is definitely classic symbol drawing. For example, her left eye is barely even visible in the reference, so why did you draw the whole thing? Just keep practicing anon, and try to use the measuring techniques he teaches in Keys.
>>2774027
There are a lot of issues with this beyond just stiffness. Even if there are pillows, the arm would never rest the way it does in relation to the couch. You don't have a good understanding of how forms sit on top of each other. If her arm is hanging off the side like that, it won't be directly straight up and down like that. It will be affect and pushed forward towards the viewer on the pillows.
I would suggest finding a reference for this particular piece. Also, just practice more figures in general.
>>2774279
This is probably the best thing you've posted thus far. I would just focus on drawing forms for people and bodies. Again, not to belabor the point, but Loomis and Hampton would greatly help your figures. Gestures are important.
>>2774317
> some parts have high detail and others look like a blurry mess. consistency is key
This isn't true. Although OP could work on their rendering, having consistent levels of detail throughout an image is distracting and actually compositionally bad. You want selective attention to detail for focal points.
>>2774358
Good job so far! I would say pay attention to proportions. You changed the angle of his head a bit, but I don't see an issue with that. You managed to maintain the features pretty consistently so whatev.
Payne's face is longer than you've drawn it. The nose is a bit short and there's not enough space between the nose and top lip. The chin is also slightly short. I like your linework and shading so far.
>>2774279
>>2775698
> consistency is bad compositionally
That paraphrase makes it sound bad, but yeah. The trick is in being aware of where you're putting the details. For instance, the path is the noisiest part of the image, but who wants to look at the dumb path? It only draws attention to the fact that it fails to convey distance.
>>2774791
Not a bad start. You've drawn her face at a slightly different angle than in the photo and aren't adjusting the features for it correctly. Try to stick with what you actually see.
Her face is turned farther to the side, it's almost profile view. The point of nose actually extends past her cheek very slightly. The lips are too protruding. The bottom lip especially should recede back a little more based on this image. (Loomis has a very good section on this in his drawing heads and hands book).
Remember to pay attention to facial planes.
>>2774993
Actually, there is a lot wrong with your images. Your poses are stiff and you don't understand how anatomy works. This isn't like one or two mistakes that can be explained away. Focus on just understanding figures and drawing from references until you get better.
Don't worry about finishing pieces. I wouldn't even start to think about color yet. That's a whole different ball game. Focus on getting at least having a basic understanding of figures and construction before moving onto color theory.

The course is a mess. A ton of mechanical exercises to start with that are not only extremely difficult for a beginner but barely beneficial.
The meat of the lessons is okay, but again, too advanced, and expects too much of a beginner. I doubt any beginner has done the course and seen results. Also, the last thing a beginner wants to do is repetitive mechanical exercises over and over again.
It's outright badly designed, unintuitive, not very helpful, and a chore at best to go through.

After you read Fun with a pencil it offers some daily exercises where you draw some characters.
Maybe adding in some challenges, like "draw a surprised character, draw a sad character, etc"
Gradually working your way up to scenes with backgrounds and lighting.
Shit nigga I dont know, point is that drawing characters and doodling is way more interesting than drawing 98743 boxes.

any advice?
Is my anatomy correct?
How to value guys?
Any reccomendations?
>>2775926
Work on your eyes, there is still some form of symbol drawing.
The ear perspective is incorrect.
The nose is pointed downward too much + too long. You also missed the bump in his nose.
The dimple in his chin is too weak.
Mouth is too low.
Your shading needs work too.
Keep up the effort, you clearly have a solid idea of what you're doing. One piece of advice I can give you that helped me a lot is trying to view your drawings critically and forget it's something you made.
Not sure how to explain it. I guess, try not to get attached to a drawing, it makes you biased.
Keep it up.
>>2775928

More precise hatching? You might also use the lines in hatching to describe the shape, i like to do that
>>2775933
thanks, that helps a lot.

Are you visually impaired? Do you have some rare disorder where your brain fabricates images that aren't there? You should probably see several specialists. That's my insight.

Going to sound retarded but how I develop "taste"?
Sometimes I will find a picture on here or elsewhere and be impressed by it.
Then see it completely torn apart by the replies.
After reading their replies the errors / faults start standing out to me.
I'd like to be able to do that myself without relying on replies.
>>2775977
That's not even a matter of taste just having a distinguishing eye. That comes with experience, the more you experiment with the better you become at seeing flaws
I'm kind of unsure how to render this even further, is it even possible to archive the final result with only default brush? I tried rendering a tiny area at the bottom part of armor but it's still quite hard.
>>2775965
mike? why did you leave your containment thread?
>>2775999
Here's the tutorial I'm following, I changed certain area of the armor, feels like that makes it even harder to render. The demo ask to use colour dodge to add colour(pink hue) to lighted area, but I still more time with that tool because I don't have much experience it.
>>2775999
Yes, but use round HARD brush
>>2772998
just focused on the process 1.5hrs from croqiscafe photo archive.
doing gesture is exhausting and slowly killing me from the inside. what can i practise in the meantime to refresh myself
I'm getting close to finishing gurney's book on color and light, but there's a section of the subject it didn't go into deeper detail. I understand the basics of hue, and value changes now, but saturation remained a mystery for me. Any good readings on the subject?

I know this is retard level stuff to you all but I'm honestly impressed the progress I made from Loomi-thingy #1 and the last one.
Currently on page 18. So this will take a while.
Feel free to shit on my poor attempts, always looking to improve.
>>2776079
can you be more specific about features? Thanks.
>>2776083
Thanks.
I fell into problem most newfags have, i only sketch all that time (6 months) and complete like 1 pic, i cant understand how to make clean art look interesting, i know about lineweight but cant understand that i need ink more thicker and what thinner/
Growing up, I've always had a penchant for sketching (comic book / fantasy type stuff, mostly character drawings). I went into graphic design, and I've never been able to bridge the gap between sketching on pen and paper, and digital painting / rendering.
Professionally, I've been stuck doing layout, logo design, and other printshop minutiae (photoshop and inDesign). How do I start into doing "digital art'?
>>2776233

'bout to throw my pc from the balcony and cut my right arm off (drawin with a mouse = huge pita), so I might just aswell post this

How the fuck did you draw that with a mouse?
>>2776396
1px default brush with 12% opacity 0 hardness on 3750x7550 canvas

>>2776413
Nope, as you can see here.
I'm just trying to hide my inability to actually draw, since I lack the courage for trial n' error (read: practise)
>>2776416
i think you have potential.
1. stop using your mouse. do traditional or buy the shitty $50 wacom. this is actually important.
2. do some fundies
3. do loomis head construction

I've always wanted one, but my concerns are unfortunately on getting food over getting a wacom.
Will do 2. and 3.
I've gotta get my shit straight if I mean to do progress.
I'd also like input about the style and details, since I've been looking at it for ages now and as you know, "became blind" to it. Feels like nothing is coming out and fixing stuff feels like working.
...maybe I just need a break and another way to kill boredom
>>2776432
>way to kill boredom
fill out some captchas and buy the shitty $50 wacom
>>2776428
Well, at least the approach is original, eh?!
Never studied a thing, never practiced a thing. I've just been doing what I've been doing, as stupid as it may be. This is actually the first time posting anything to be publicly ridiculed so I'm very excited but very anxious. (Also pretty much the only posts I've ever made on 4chan)
>>2776439
you sound mad but also generally aesthetically pleasing
your drawing is ok too
do you live in a van?
>>2776432
Then do traditional, honestly. Doing that with a mouse must take such a long time, you're never going to be able to complete enough works to improve. Also you're going to destroy your hand.
Your works are good, although the one with the white haired woman has badly rendered hair and skin and in general incorrect facial structure. With some practice with the fundamentals however, especially form, you'll improve a lot I'm sure. If you would manage to invest in a tablet I'm sure you would in a few months of marketing yourself be able to earn money from art.
>>2776440
Not in a van at least!
Just generated a debt through long term substance abuse to cope with depression n' shit.
>>2776442
I guess I've gotta pick up the pencil. It takes ridiculous amounts of time, even though I say so myself, and I can feel the strain on my hand(s). Playing guitar sure doesn't help...
Thanks for the kind and encouraging words! I've gotta learn to live with failures. I used to draw traditionally ages ago, but went digital 'cause it's much more forgiving. Still takes from months to years to pick up a work and never seem to finish a thing.

Proportions. Maybe start with boxes or something.
Also, finding the hard lines helps you shade and thus brings up more form. Leaving out face will most likely leave you with a head with bad position, posture and proportions.
What comes to shading, for example the left breast looks twice as big as the right one.
>>2776000
