Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

>>2770436
Maybe what he meant was to exaggerate the pose. It's not exactly "stiff" as in how the average /beg/ draws stiff poses but try doing that pose yourself and feel where the tensions are in your body and push those curves and positions - as in to say, make it more dynamic than it already is.
>>
>>2770444
i would do that pose if i could mate, but unfortunately there is nothing around here for me to hang off of (also im fat as fuck and couldn't do it even if i had the means to) but i understand where you are coming from. i will try to exaggerate the pose a bit.

thign about stiff poses is some are naturally stiff, the dude is rigidly holding his torso straight so as to balance, he also has a taught rope for his arm between him and the wall. the rest just dangle in gravity. i think this pose is naturally straight. its also static (not moving)

>>
>>2770475
This is pretty good. I like the way you blocked out the forms. I would say that the body looks off balance in a sort of stiff/awkward manner. His right foot (our left) looks like it's slightly off the ground? The post isn't quite dramatic enough to look like he's actually lost his footing.

I'm new here and posted a separate thread on accident. I guess I'm supposed to post here instead.

"Hey everyone. I've been working on some figure/anatomy studies lately to try and get better at being spontaneous about drawing bodies. I've gone through Hampton, and I find that i have a difficult time figuring out what certain forms are "under" the skin. I've sat down and documented all the major superficial muscles and how they attach. But seeing it on an actual person, especially in funky poses, often confuses me.

These were done in about 3-5 minutes each off of various references. The top 2/3 were done from photos, the bottom 3 images were done from posemaniacs.

I think with photos, I'll often see shapes but not be able to identify exactly what muscle or ligament it's supposed to be.

I'd appreciate any critique or general advice."
>>
>>2770436
Work on line weight
>>
>>2770504
i found posemaniacs to be really shitty and not accurate. Look at actual figure drawing classes in your area. Work on getting faster. You should have waaaaaay more detail in those in 3-5 minutes.
>>
>>2770510
I went to it mostly because I was trying to figure out what the muscles look like and how they bulged out. But the models are all sort of flattened, so I guess that defeats the point.
>>
>>2770516
you need to hammer in proportions too my guy
>>
>>2770516
Stop trying to get too detailed. At this point, the intricacies of each unimportant muscle are the last thing you want to get into- focus on the fundamentals: Form, correct proportion, and the few visible/superficial muscle groupings.
>>
>>2770507

For any beginner who is interested

a series of tips to help compliment Loomis, mostly stuff i learned from vilppu and an anime bargue plate if you are interested, copying it once should solidify the knowledge you need and then you can just go back to symbol drawing animu peach keen
(In case you were like me and thought loomis drawings are butt ugly but find your anime drawings too flat and lacking)

The letter at the bottom is just my own experience with getting "good"
>It's not about putting in 10,000 hours; The "best" artists are not necessarily the successful ones. "Success" means something different to everyone. Know what you're good at, and PERFECT it, from every. single. angle. You'll know you're on the right track when more and more hours of work start to yield you less and less in "gains". The first 10,000 hours get you 90% of the way there. The next 10,000 gets you 99% of the way there. and the last 10,000, well?
I'm not sure. I'll let you know someday, when we're both there.

Godspeed anons and remember you are never are so special a snowflake to start a new thread on /ic/. Post in the respective fucking general.

How can you exercised through all of Hampton's book and still be this bad? You don't apply anything he teaches. Did you just quickly read through it without practicing? But even then you should show some understanding of the concepts. Seems to me you haven't even read the first chapter. Read Hampton again or get another book if his teaching style doesn't suit you.

And don't listen to that other anon, you don't need details right now, but gesture and andmark studies and basic form practice.

>>
>>2770727
cut out everything stressful you do with your hand that isnt important. use your left on your mouse, try and browse with your keyboard (qutebrowser), wank with your left if you can, minimise use, do the exercises people talk about before drawing and in bed before sleep. google it, maybe ice packs or something are good.

it looks like it took you five time to get the right line with an inking pen and even more with a pencil. You're doing small short strokes rather than long confident ones. Draw from Observation more only using a pen. Watch and be careful about where you put down your lines.

Never drawn before, want to start today, read the sticky and i'm practicing copying from real life but i'm running into a problem.

My eyesight has always been real bad, i'm a -6.00 for glasses and I have visual snow https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visual_snow

When I look at a reference object, I have a VERY difficult time visualizing the whole object, like my eye can only focus on a tiny bit of it at a time, and I forget every other part of the object when I'm away from it.

I can copy simple stuff like cartoons just fine, but physical objects kill me.

Is this normal for a beginner? Am I supposed to look at an object a bit at a time and draw it? When I move doesn't that fuck up my perspective? Should I copy photographs instead?

>>
>>2771040
It's tough to describe, can you perceive an image you are copying as a whole, or do you need to break it down into pieces and follow bits and pieces of the image?

If you see a face, do your eyes dart around to the eyes, the nose, the hair etc or can you perceive the whole thing at once?

I'm sure i'm overreacting but the instructions from the guide sound different than how I see.

The shadows are way too gray in tone, you should choose something with a slightly different colour than the skin itself. And that pink colour looks absolutely horrible, use much less of it, in a more neutral shade.
>>
>>2770704
I read through it and did some of the exercises. I didn't post anything I did from the book.

I have a difficult time applying it without having it right there. Understanding wise I found his teaching style very helpful.

But thank you. I have a hard time quickly putting down landmarks.

Also, as a matter of speed, someone mentioned I should be drawing faster. Should I force myself to just do whatever shit I can in a shorter window? Or would it be better to just do slow/longer studies until I get more comfortable?

Not too bad, but the facial proportions are a bit skewed. If you haven't read keys to drawing already, read that and especially the section about taking measurements with your drawing tools. Using those techniques would help, as well as simply practicing.

>>
>>2771335
I have no idea what you're talking about. I'm personally glad nobody sugarcoats things and I've gotten (mostly) harsh yet constructive criticism as a beginner that has helped me improve. I can't remember the last time someone's made me "feel bad." Give bants, take bants, don't take anything too seriously, take crits with a grain of salt and draw.

I think your expectations of this place is too outworldly. We're on a Siberian basketweaving messageboard.
>>
>>2771359
not them, but I wish this place had more constructive feedback. it has a bit, but I think it could use more. it would really help this place I think. now let me explain the type of feedback I'm talking about before everyone starts shouting about hugboxes yada yada word of the month.

I mean feedback like, your perspective is spot on, your anatomy is good for the lower half of the body, you did the values really well here. not to be nice or make people happy, but so they know if they're doing good shit. pretty much everyone here is a beginner minus a couple of people, so if they do something right they might not even know they're doing it well.

one thing about negative feedback is that it's fine but a few side notes. your perspective is shit, your values are garbage, etc. this is perfectly fine. your shit sucks, get the fuck out is also fine but much less helpful and more conducive to making literally everyone you critique into a worthless troll or end up leaving this place instead of contributing. if it sucks you should at least bother telling them what sucks, and if everything sucks then fine tell them everything is shit.

this post isn't aimed at you, I just replied because it's somewhat related.

Don't pay attention to weird outlines, I just played around with layer opacity. Cleaner lines? Just get basic jawlines down? Draw shadows that make sense?

Honestly, it's okay to feel like shit or be sad about critiques. Sometimes it's hard to get negative feedback. Frustration is natural.

As long as you know it's kind of a knee jerk feeling and you work past it you will get better. Some people here are total trolling assclowns, so you gotta mentally filter.

I think you just have to take this place with a grain of salt.
>>
>>2771560
don't
>>
>>2771445
You can achieve this just by lower the opacity on a brush and painting correctly. It's important to not become reliant on brush gimmicks and such to do your work for you. Before Sai, hell, before digital painting, people had to do all their blend effects completely manually.

There are a lot of issues with this where doing a redline or specific correction wouldn't really help much. Draw less from imagination. Look at faces and learn how to draw them the way they actually are. Not to be a meme, but Loomis actually really does explain this well for head construction and planes.

Well, features are different on each person, but for the eyes there was a basic "rule" that was something like "run a line from the corner of the mouth upwards, and that should give you the place where the eye starts" and to know how big an eye is, remember that the space between the two eyes equals one eye. But as I said, this isn't always the case, I suggest doing a lot of faces and trying to see the relationships yourself.

>>2771587

It is, but I get the impression that the pose is broken

The other person did a good rendition. Part of the issue is that you drew her face at a slightly different tilt than is in the photo. So, you can salvage this without redrawing just by logically mapping out the angle you have based on the shape of her features.

*The ref's head is not as turned away as yours.
*Your drawing has a slightly higher camera angle.

Features should line up on a sphere.

The legs look a bit off. I feel like you'd be able to see some contour of the leg that's behind the character's left knee.

Hands look a bit flat. The raised on in the middle is okay. The other one looks like it doesn't have bones.

Folds on the sleeves on the rightmost image look off. it almost looks like the fabric is stitched too tightly on purpose. If it's flowy fabric, the folds won't form like that just on the bottom. They need to result from a pressure/bunched up point.

Different fabric will fold differently:

Dumb question but... I want to learn to cross hatch on portraits. Is there a 'best' direction for the hatches to go? Like wrapping around the form, or against it?
>>
>>2771967
thats just for low test tumblr users, keep grinding.
>>
>>2771972
Wrapping against the form destroys the illusion of it. Learn about light sources and apply your hatching in wrapping lines in the shadow areas. Use cross hatching for core shadows. Be wary of your crossing lines, they should both follow the form from different angles. Don't use straights in portraits, there are no completely flat planes on organic forms. Push your values to the max to get the most out of this technique, don't try to hatch everything unless that's the style you want to go for.
>>
>>2771941
I am not very far yet, but yes, most definitely. But as a warning, the course is long and Olson repeats himself quite a bit.

LOOMIS

Naw but seriously, there's no food that will make you better at art specifically.

Just try to eat so that you have energy to focus for long periods. What works best varies form person to person, so I can't give you an exact answer, but don't eat too much, try eating more greens and fish, and try to avoid fast carbohydrates that will spike your insulin and blood sugar (personally, I find that hunger helps me focus, so try fasting until you're done with your studies for the day).
>>
Am I allowed to use a ruler while I begin to study from life an photo references? Is that something I should avoid entirely because it's a bad way to get comfortable in thinking?
>>
>>2772095
who told you this? why would you think this?
>>
>>2772097
Someone said it would help me be more thoughtful in the placement of each individual line if I stopped and measured every once in a while during a study, so I though it might be good to use a ruler as a component of the drawing equipment explicitly to create plumb-lines and iterate to the greatest accuracy humanly possible what the measurements of the reference photo actually are; to try and transcend the fallible comparative measuring technique that's used more often
>>
>>2772095
If you mean using the ruler to find the scale of things, I'd suggest using the ruler only after you've attempted eyeballing it.
If you mean using it to draw long straight lines, then go ahead, but remember to practice drawing steady lines freehand as well. There are things you just can't do with a ruler.

I think you're trying to bite off more than you can chew right now. I mean you can do more finished figures for fun if you want, but you're better off spending that time on the super basic construction shit right now.

I lost it, it was one of the first results of 'model fashion', that's how I generally find references, just browse google
>>
First: start thinking in the most dry and indivisible mathematical forms. Do not concentrate on whole shapes but the individual composites that make up those shapes: lines. Record what the lines do when they join, where they are from one another. Ask yourself the total limit of what you can create using different sinuous and uniform lines insofar as it takes you to allocate it with the final value of a perpetually cavernous and monolithic void of withering, writhing cognizance that even if one committed to etching on every googol scroll in-lieu to your own brain's electricity currently functioning as paper: you'd never grasp the true signifiers highlighted using our friend the everyman line; his various shades and fetters and quirks burnishing their veins across every piece of papyrus we've ever owned.

Drawings become an ethereal organism crossing over multiple continents, connected together nervously by the aesthetes. Their designs are printed on to swords and combust parts of themselves and their perpetuators

Sorry I meant go read Draw A Box

>the very first book in your drawing journey is going to be a chore

Sorry for saying this unironically, but with that attitude it's going to be really hard to make it. Some might say you're 'never' going to make it.

How are you supposed to discipline yourself over the course of the initial /beg/-tier learning stage if you find something like that a "chore?"

If I were you, I'd rethink that I'd really want from delving into art. What do you want to create? What are your goals? Do you enjoy the process more than the end product (and if not, why)?
>>

Complete beginner working in the Edwards book, this is one of the hand drawings, early exercise. Middle is the reference picture plane outline. The left is initial attempt, looked fucked up so adjusted the length and width of the palm on the right image. Not sure if I even got the picture plane image right, looks a bit off to me.

Anyways still doesn't look exactly right to me, not sure what else I'm missing. I think the pinky and ring fingers are a bit too small, and some of the other lines don't look perfect, but I'm not sure what else to fix, what am I missing?

Should I even be too worried about it, or is the idea with those books to kind of just keep going?
>>
>>2772413

Keep going. Don't get too caught up with making fantastic or correct art. The early books are just there to facilitate early concepts and skills to beginners.

If you get caught up making things "perfect" then you're missing the point of the books.

Those look good btw.

So I'm trying to learn anatomy and, as a first step, how to build the skeleton in 3D. Proko's lessons are great but holy shit the spine is kicking my ass. I feel like most of the battle is just getting the ribcage and pelvis blocked in while properly visualizing the flow of the spine in 3D space.

I've read enough Robertson to know how to approach such things technically, if I need to project a curve into a well-defined cube or plane or whatever I can do it. But a tube fluidly curving and flowing through space at all sorts of angles is a different beast. Is there some exercise or technique that helps visualize this sort of thing intuitively?

The ribcage is the worst because I know it's rigid, but I swear it really can look like it bends or twists or whatever

The old fashioned way is to memorize the anterior, posterior, lateral and superior aspects of the bones and start rotating them in your mind and drawing them in perspective. Then figure out what the spine does and where and start rotating different poses.

Just drew this and first time at art while using loomis but I think i'm not doing it right
>>
>>2772579
Yeah, that's what I'm doing for the parts, locate landmarks in perspective (ASIS/PSIS/Sternum) and construct. This was hard at first but it's getting easier, I'm actually starting to feel OK about the pelvis.

My main issue is with the spine itself and how the ribcage/pelvis follow it, as well as getting the right proportion/overlap between the parts. The spine as a bendy tube can be surprisingly hard to get right, because when I'm drawing a "line" it's easy for me to start thinking in 2d and mess up foreshortening or overlap.

I can always get through the difficult bends by drawing every vertebra but I feel like that probably shouldn't be necessary for a non-retarded person. Oh well. Once I finally figure out how to unlock "3d line drawing" in my brain I expect gesture and hair drawing will become much easier also.
