I wanna make a patreon account
any advice?
>>
>>2768472

You need a user base first, you don't aquire the user base by having a patreon. So you'll need a few thousand followers atleast on other platforms before even thinking about Patreon. Source: guy with successful patreon that I asked
>>
>>2768474
How?
>>
>>2768496

That is something you largely need to figure out for yourself. If you need guidance, study and emulate the online social presence of successful artists you like.

Social media is a skill just like art & design, and it needs to be practiced like one. Do it, pay attention to what works and what doesn't, and build off your mistakes.
>>
>>2768474
This.

>>2768496
Post your best, use tags, keep posting.
>>
>>2768496
Make a Tumblr and a DA and draw, draw, draw. Keep a lil' focus on current trends, fanart and off course your own interests (tag your stuff) AND work on improving your art and skills. Socialize a bit, comment on other peoples art, make gifts, do some requests, just get in to it. If this sounds like too much work/not interesting, then forget about Patreon!
>>
>>2768507
It sound interesting
oh fuck is too hard
>>
>>2768472
this nigga finally did it? ugh
>>
>>2768507
>a lil' focus on current trends

Another anon here asking, is pumping out fanart based on flavor of the season anime, every season gonna cut it or do I have to stay up to date now on vidya?
>>
>>2768671
Dunno anon, do you think having a follower base mostly composed of weebs is a good idea?
>>
>>2768674
Fuck no.
>>
>>2768686
Well there you go.

Also, I'd think popular video game fanart stays relevant longer than anime fanart, anyways.

Just make nintendo fanart. That shit never gets older and will attract easily impressionable people.
>>
>>2770859
one day nintendo will find out about patreon and people making money from naked pics of their characters and will take them down, mark my words. nintendo is a very dangerous company to do fan related things to.

>>
>>2771170
they most definitely don't have the manpower or time to shut down every porn artist out there but if you were to be one of the unlucky few that got struck it would really suck
>>
>>2770859
Nintendo is one of the few things to NOT make fanart of. I guess this concerns their first-party stuff and not third-party games under their lineup?

So stuff like Xenoblade, Bayonetta or whatever is fine, but first-party stuff extending as far as say, I dunno, Kirby, Mother 3, and Pokemon are a big-no-no?Is Fire Emblem considered first-party?

Lastly, I don't know exactly how it goes with holding the rights to IPs if developers co-produce with other studios, so can anyone clarify?
>>
>>2771144
Depends on everything Shlomoh.
What platform your followers come from, what you draw, how many followers actually click on your shitty patreon and finally how many are willing to pay for your art.

>>
>>2772536
1 rich autist. Or 1000 poor ones.
>>
>>2772467
To me it seems like Nintendo is so damn big that you'll get lost in the sea of other fanartists, anyway.

Unless you're a really big fish, it seems like a better idea to go with a smaller pond.

That´s how much I´m at right now. I have around 10k on dA and 15k on tumblr (2k on pixiv and 4k twitter followers) I draw fanart and I would say I have a somewhat unique style. I post a drawing every third day on average. I don´t have any patreon exclusive rewards however. It´s just a tip jar.
>>
>>2772567

>>
>>2772567
you mean 100 people are giving you $1?
>>

>>

I know someone getting $2,000 monthly on patreon, started with a new name and new account just 11 months ago. been drawing for 2 years. Currently has 9,933 followers on DA.

she draws nude + yuri fanart (no originals) and posts something new every 2 days or so.
>>
>>2772630
2k monthly = 24k per year...

Why even bother
>>
>>2772640
Seems like more than what you'd make at a manual labor 9 to 5 job
>>
>>2772644
Just get a real job and give up, then you can get a 24k bonus
>>
>>2772640
>>2772655
For posting something once every 2 days, that's almost no effort at all for $2k per month. You can easily have a real job and still keep the patreon thing running.
>>
>>2772567
>>2772630

So nude and lewd artwork in general gets 10x the money is what I'm seeing here. Fucking /ic/ trying to make me believe otherwise.
>>
>>2772682
Link I want to see their quality and know you're not bullshitting.
>>
>>2772640
>Why even bother
here 300 monthly is the norm, which makes 3.6k pale in comparison with 24k
>>
>>2772709
Well lewd art and cute art along with actual media like comics serves a general purpose to consumers.

Cool landscapes or dudes in armor don't really serve any purpose unless they're a design for someone who commissioned them.

her quality is absolute shit. that's the best part. she's a shitty sakimichan copycat who learned *everything* she knows from sakimichan's tutorials. i suspect she either traces or heavily references porn pics for all the poses, because there's no way she knows the first thing about anatomy.

i dont get why people pay for this subpar shit when they could be watching real porn or getting real girls
>>
>>2772682
If you had a regular job, then you wouldn't need a patreon, seems greedy and half hearted if you do art for money instead of just doing it because you enjoy it.

the need for validation through monetary compensation devalues the act of creating art.
>>
>>2770859
>Just make nintendo fanart.

The "Just make x fanart." people here really think that making fanart will automatically make you popular?
>>
>>2772941
It will.
>draw oc - get 3.5k views in six months
>draw fan art and post it on Reddit - 35k views in a week

>don't really serve any purpose
this pretty much

Your art needs to hold value for the consumer if you want to be successful
>hey this guy makes shit that is important to me and my interests, I will support him
>>
>>2768496
Coming from a freelance writer/art consumer perspective:

1. Nobody wants 2 hour tutorials. Nobody.
2. Make everything brief but detailed
3. Find an untapped niche, be it a subject, style, or material used
4. Do not ask for money at all (except for commissions ofc) until everything is fine. Make sure your Patreon is finished, don't unveil half-completed pages.
5. Ask, "Would any of you guys want to donate on Patreon to support my content?" then you know exactly what to do.
6. You already have the Patreon set up. Get a resounding yes? Go live. Get absolutely no positive feedback? Wait a bit longer. Repeat 4-6.
>>
>>2772820
>using faces like xD ^^ >.>
>makes shitty sakimi copy faces on absolutely horrible bodies
>name is customwaifus
>improper value, perspective and anatomy mistakes glaringly obvious
>makes 2k month not including commissions which they post as part of the content that earns them 2k a month

Thank you sweety! I'm excited for her too she's going to be soooo cute look at her little pout lip looook at iiiiit ^3^ ^3^ ^3^!!! <3

No, I refuse to believe this. How far is western IQ slipping? What the fuck is happening in this world? God damn it.
>>
>>2773120
Nothing changed. That's just a typical day on that side of deviantart.

The artist probably acts extra retarded to appear more relatable to her followers, as well.
>>
>>2770804
This.
>>
>>2773118
You can donate 1000$ and just decline the payment on paypal. Patreon isn´t responsible for that. The rewards are unlocked without paying for them.
Remember Breeding Season? They distributed the latest version of their game through Patreons reward system which lead to like 60k monthly. They only received a tiny fraction of that.
Always be suspicious when an artist let´s Patreon handle the rewards.
>>
>>2773203
these days most of the payments are automatic and the payment goes through right away, plus I'm sure most of those people do pay. I don't want to believe it but then again I do because it means that people will support artists, even ones who might not normally get support. maybe one day I will be able to achieve this, and if I do I hope my patrons truly support me.
>>
>>2773203
idk about that, but Sakimichan herself waits until all payment is processed before she distributes the rewards. i was her patron for a while and that sometimes took 1-2 weeks after the actual date.
>>
>>2768472
1. Create yourself some kind of superficial and over the top personality.
2. Open a youtube account.
3. Review every single pen, brush and paper you're using.
4. Collect millions of followers.
5. Profit.
>>
>>2773537
don't forget to make brush packs for photoshop which consist of "highly customized" brushes you use in all your pictures
>>
>>2773537
>Create yourself some kind of superficial and over the top personality
this sounds like the worst part of this whole business.
>>
>>2773537
don't forget pretend to be a qt girl
>>
>>2772539
yikes I think this is actually the best answer on all of /ic/
>>
>>2772655
nigger what fucking job pays that much
>>
So what I'm gathering from this thread is that you absolutely cannot make it on patreon unless you have a massive following to begin with and/or are drawing porn. Actual serious and inspired stuff will never get noticed right?
>>
>>2773973
Pretty much
>>
>>2773594
no kidding
>>
>>2773821
Basically any job in tech, and you get stocks and stuff.

Best part is: the work is chill and hours are lax so I can spend time drawing when I feel like it, and not worry about starving to death

Worst part is: not everyday is fulfilling my soul with quality work. Some days I feel like I'm wasting my talents editing documentation in latex.
>>
>>2773983
Then why am I even trying kek
>>
Asking here to avoid making a new thread:

How do you organize a patreon??? I'm having trouble figuring out how to send out rewards to people. You can't even attach several pics to posts...

How do you guys do it???
>>
>>2775258
Pretty sure you can find your answer on google/youtube
>>
>>2768496
basically you'll have to be a fanart slave for a while.
>>
>>2775282

I don't think this is a 'what's the right way' type of question. More a 'what efficient way have you guys figured out' question. Patreon feeds can become a cluttered mess very easily...
>>
>>2768496
If you post work that's interesting and you put a lot of effort into, and if it's good enough, people will begin to notice.
>>
>>2775292
I guess the best approach is like most of art blogs are meant to be run: minimize anything off topic or text posts, don't upload too many WIP's and focus on drawing to be able to upload on a regular schedule.
