Anyone got examples of top down view sprites?
I can think of Hotline Miami, but I was looking for something where it shows characters inclining their bodies while running, and possibly, looking sexy with females.
>>
>>2806792
That's a pretty vague question, there are many different kinds of top/down games out there.

What resolution are you looking and aiming for? 16x32? Have you taken a look at www.spriters-resource.com ?

>>2807124Brother, let me tell you something. Many a day I have lumbered here by this fence and looked at this world. These fences which border this small plot of mud seem to be the edges of the Earth. But I have gazed many beyond the fence. I have watched the hills of green and the tall, slim, terrifying figures who lurk and haunt the strange barn on the far side of the hill, who appear as spectres as the sun rises at the break of day and refill the Oats, and float away without a word. Often I wonder why we are not like them, why we cannot give ourselves the oats, why we are limited and chained down by the girth of our bodies and the uselessness of our hooves. And indeed for many years this sad truth, that forever we would be trapped in this shallow frame, alone, and without purpose or direction, banished forever to wallow in our own filth, this depressed me. But yesterday I realized something. Who are we to be ungrateful for existence in the first place? Who are we to say that this life is not good enough? Instead of oblivion we have the warmth of the sun and the coolness of soil. We have fair conversations and a good night's sleep. Who am I to say that these simple comforts are no better than death? Should we not smile like the sun and bask in our happiness as the sunlight warms the soil without question or thank. So brother, let us share oats and smile and frolick as much as our girth might let us. Let us see this pen not as a prison or a hell but as a palace in which we might enjoy the best our existence has to offer. Give me some oats brother, and let us dine together. I love you.

32 x 32 (px), around that size.

Googling "top down sprite" actually brings me a ton of results, but it's all gunmen walking in robotic style or point a gun almost always in the same way.
I just glanced at that site but I can't search for top down views. And by top down I mean a view facing exactly down direction, vector (0, 0, -1).

I'm trying to coin my own sexy female but I'd like to see references first.
I'd post my work but IDK how to take .gifs from GraphicsGale free version...

>Colours with so little contrast that they just blend into one, making the shading not register at all
>What is anti-aliasing?

Also why pick a completely new colour for the shading on the dress when you could've just recycled another colour from the palette?
>>
>>2807290

the jagged lines are caused by the lack of anti aliasing, or just poor pixel placement? i was under the impression that AA is not always required

and the green shading of the dress has the same reused value in the eyes, and was necessary to differentiate the identical blue in the hair and dress.

thanks for the input

It isn't, and this piece needs very little. Personally I'd ditch the dithering as well.

It isn't, most problems here are caused by bad pixel clusters.

> and was necessary to differentiate the identical blue in the hair and dress.

Even though they pretty much register as the same colour? I have a feeling you spend far too much time zoomed in on the piece, since all the symptoms would point towards that, IMO.

edit:
reduced the amount of colors by condensing similar shades.
increased the contrast
removed the dithering
shortened the torso. standing straight with one's arms at their sides, the tips of the fingers should be near the knees.
tried to better convey form by 1. thinking about the lighting 2. thinking in clusters
>>
>>2807358
oh, and if you're using black, you need to use it for your deepest shadows throughout the piece rather than in just one small area. otherwise the areas with deep shadows that lack any black will seem flat by comparison. it's tricky using pure black because it has a tendency to "punch through" the image.

well yea, for videogames it's a different story. you'll have backgrounds of varying hue and value, so unless you control for this in some other way, outlines will be the best way to make sure your sprites stand out no matter what background they're on top of. But I don't see that they're at all necessary for pixel art that isn't intended to be used as a video game sprite.

The first one could perhaps use to have a better shaped tree, I don't know if you can see it but the way the branch twists comparatively to the shadow just doesn't really match from where the camera is, we don't really feel like we're having a view from underneath, it just feels a bit odd. That's the only critique I have, I like the others and overall I like the colors you used.
>>
Let me repeat my question from before. Is there a place I can get my hands on color palettes from old RPGs or should I just guesswork my way towards the colors I'd like.

I think you should make your shades more defined, and be wary of the pillow shading on the tire and pipes. Also, you have a bad case of stairs outlines, clean it.
You should probably study references, and be able to properly draw a tank before drawing one from imagination, if you want to make something really good. The volumes are not really defined and it makes it look like some kind clusterfuck.

How to download ugoira (aka .gif) from pixiv in good quality?

http://ugoira.dataprocessingclub.org/ is no good, pic related. Download it and load it into aseprite or whatever to get what I mean, that shit just .jpgize it.
I also use Ank Pixiv Tool for regular Pixiv downloads and while it's great for anything that is not a .gif, for .gif it also downloads each part in .jpg. It's cool to have each frame of a given .gif but having them in .jpg is just terrible if you'd like to study at a pixel level.
>>
webm is as shit by the way, and can't be loaded in pixel programs anyway so it's kind of worthless aside from sharing it on 4chan.

I'm more of a character designer than a pixel artist, but nonetheless here are my sprites. Thoughts?
>>
>>2815220

Nice silhouettes, you got a lot of variation in there. They kind of look like templates rather than finished sprites though. You need a strong light source and your color choices leave a bit to desire, they kind of look like they were all made in the standard paint swatches or something. Look up hue shifts.
>>
>>2813622
>>2813618
Pixiv sucks now.
They are moving in a direction that does not benefit artists...this is why their image viewer is so utterly shit and why you're stuck with pixel art that's been re-encoded to a shitty JPEG.

Also yeah webm sucks big time for pixel art, stick to gif.
There's a few techniques you can use to strip out artifacts in pixel art JPEGs, but they're too time consuming to be worth it.
>>
>>2815244
It baffles me how pixiv and twitter are the main websites used by Japanese artists and those can't even handle simple image or .gif sharing correctly, it's always a huge problem trying to download things in a simple and efficient way on those without the help of a tier program.

I wish they would gather to something similar to Pixel Joint but I think they're too deep into twitter to care about another platform. dA might have a shit community but at least profiles, galleries, submissions and such are uploaded and maintained in a clear and straightforward way, it has that going for it at least.

hey guys! so im trying to do a logo for a music project and i was thinking of doing something like this? its a game on the nes called barcode and i really like the gundam 32bit look too it. if anyone has any good referances please let me know!
>>
>>2817453
I'm sure some subset of the population won't care about shitty animation, but is that what you really want? Even most normies can tell an awkward animation from something with a real feeling of physics and weight, even if they can't tell you exactly what makes a good animation good.
>>
>>2817544
32 bit? Doesn't even look 16bit, seems like something you'd see on an 8bit console.
>>
>>2817575
what I'm saying is that I want to make a product before an artwork with this. glorious, lavish illustrations that just end up killing a project are not worth it.

normies don't care that much you know. Ever heard of south park? American cartoons? 3D animation replacing gorgeous 2D animation? The lavish praise for SF4 HD graphics, and the "meh" for KOF13 splendid sprites that were too "pixelated"?

so I'm trying to make something that looks decent while being fast, and find the best compromise.

None of those examples are as awkward as this animation though, South Park is primitive but really owns the simplistic style. I really don't think it's asking much to learn a proper walk cycle, it's usually a pretty big part of any game. If you're trying to make an actual game then it's true time is a valuable resource, but the vast majority of these "my first game" projects are never completed, or even make it to demo stage anyway, so this might as well be a learning experience, even if the game is completed it's not like your first game is your magnum opus.

It's your decision, but shuffle-walks are pretty awkward
>>
>>2817607
tb h, I found it awkward myself, so I don't really disagree with you.
The thing is, moving a few things around already take up quite some time. So I'm thinking what it would make for 10 chars, and that's a lot of work with little payoff, at least for now.

Once again, there's absolutely no difficulty going back and improve sprites later, so I'll approach it like a painting, broad things first and details later.

Hey man, that anon who gave advice earlier again. I think the one where the two legs are further apart is the better one, as it's easier to read. The other version could perhaps be used as part of a jumping animation. Also, watch out for her left armpit- it seems a little awkward. Apart from that, great job anon, it looks solid.

Also, thanks a lot for the advice, it'll certainly be beneficial. I should probs begin working on smaller projects- I often get a little too ambitious.
>>
>>2818656
Hotline miami could help you out. Lots of sprites, lots of different animations.
>>
Anyway to map individual frames to pieces in a sprite sheet?
Or do I have to do it by hand to test my sprite each time?

I'm using Aseprite/GGale BTW.
>>
>>2820353
If you did organize your sprite images naming convention intelligently, the best is probably for you to use Imagemagick through command line.
You make a script with something like
montage -mode Concatenate -tile 10x idle*.png walk*.png spritesheet.png
it's better this way so that you have a written trace of your process, and it's easy to roll out changes, etc.
it's also easy to integrate automatic sprite edits in the script.
e.g. convert -flop left.png right.png
so that if you later change left, you then execute your script and you get updated right automatically.

>>
>>2817391
You are already working on a resolution that is too high. Even if you were to do little, as inexperienced as you are, that 128*128 is overkill.
Also, try shadowing only after you finish and are satisfied with the animation.
The more you do it, the easier it will become.
Mind, I didn't mean to imply you should start from a blank canvas, but you must not be afraid to move things around more.
Like the other anon mentioned, when is legs are wide open, his height decreases. Also don't afraid to twist his pelvis/hips and his chest/shoulders a tad bit.

>>2817400
>>2817478
Do a duplicate, paint over the dithering with a unique colour, reshape the wings (very slight wider) then reapply the dither.
Aligning the feathers right should be the only boring task.
>>
>>2820800
hmm I'm not so retarded, and I've already done good pixel animation. problem is that I probably spent days on them.
the issue is that I was trying to see how much I can get away with to go very fast in order to do a full game.

>that 128*128 is overkill
oh no. I've worked with 64x64 sprites, and it was a nightmare. the entropy of each sprite is really really hard to manage. you really have to craft every pixel with care. I want to draw more than move pixels around.

anyway I'll see how things evolve. I'll redo it seriously in time anyway. with head bob, pelvis lowering and all that.

It honestly hurts my brain looking at this, I can't stare at it for more than a few seconds, to the point I'm wondering if you didn't do this on purpose.

But anyway I doubt you're trolling of course, so first I would recommend to flat out the sand the same way the grass is, that way the eyes have more room to rest rather than get constantly attacked by overly detailed tiles. The water might be no good too, the cliffs on the other hand are probably fine, but for now in that state they clash too much with the rest to really tell.

>>2824537
That's great.

Just my opinion but I don't think 2D RPGs necessarily need to be animated anyway (thinking of FF6 etc). Perhaps animations à la Pokémon Crystal / Emerald or HeartGold/Soul Silver.

This is much better, good job.

Next I'm getting the same vibe as before where it feels difficult to stare at the house and the pathway you made for it, the two don't match at all, it feels out of place. To begin with the pathway and its rocks are way too big, compare to the cliffs, there's no way you'd find a rocky pathway that big unless a giant lives there. The perspective for it is off too, which is why it's hard to stare at it.

Less off but I can't say I like the bottom of these cliffs, they don't seem to fit with the sand, so I would recommend trying to work on how to make them merge together, because as it stands now it feels as if the entire cliff was just floating above the sand a bit.

This might seem like advice that won't help you get anywhere- but it's the best I offer anyway. Try out different styles, techniques, coloring etc. When you experiment you tend to not only understand the things you are working with- it's also a step towards defining the artstyle that you prefer looking at and working with. Don't get me wrong though, I'm not saying that finding inspiration or looking at tutorials is a bad thing at all.

The second one s better but here again could be made tinier with better pixel placements.

Light can be broken down into different grades, when people refer to the highlight, they're usually referring to the brightest part of the light, or the brightest color.

If you spread the brightest color around too evenly it looks flat. You have to study the form of objects to understand where to put your bright and dark colors. Here's an edit to show what I mean.

Look up "light and value in art" and read the sticky.

Dude, what you're doing right now is pillow shading. You're simply filling space with lighter colours towards the centre of the shape. What you should be doing is shading according to a light source or from a specific direction, pic related is a good example of how much better it could be.

Been trying to improve; 1 is from a while ago, 2 is an attempt after brushing up on some tutorials, trying to use some better anti-aliasing and shadows that make a bit more sense. (And a better palette, and shaded lines.) I know at the very least there's still some things I need to fix on the silhouette, but I'm trying to pin down a good style/light source before going back through the other sprites.
>>
>>2842395
No. You could work in those styles while making pixel art though. Painting has thousands of years of history, pixel art really only has a few decades. Movements in painting developed as cultures merged and developed through different eras (classical->medieval->renaissance). They also developed as reactions to dominant modes of painting in the past/academia, or along with nascent philosophies as new ways of seeing the world or art itself (impressionism, abstract expressionism, etc.)

Meanwhile pixel art has developed during the modern/post-modern era when there are no rules just tools. Those tools do more to define styles than any "movements": dithering is more common in older art, different computers had specific palettes and other limitations, etc.

The moon is behind the tree. However the moonlight on the tree makes it look like the moon is a little light source in the left front of the tree.
Also, you totally forgot to make the bonfire light on the grass!

Still, I would really appreciate some criticism on how to improve some more. For example, here's a quick one I made a few days ago. I just know it could be way better.

>>2841967
I use Pixly. It's pretty damn nice and runs well on every Android device I own.
>>
>>2843886
Don't completely agree on the moon part, since the ambient lighting from the moon can be pretty intense. Though, it could be a tad too intense here, I gotta admit.
Completely agree with you on the campfire, looking at it now, it gives way too little light. (Also the fire itself is a bit too dim now that I think about it).
Thanks!
>>2841647
Cheers, mate.
>>
>>2843918
>Don't completely agree on the moon part
not the guy who mentioned it but yeah
you're a fucking idiot, read some loomis and learn how light actually works
>>
>>2843923
>lol read loomis
>don't actually point out the exact issue at hand, and provide actual feedback
So should there be less lighting from the Moon over all? Should the lighting be more uniform and not focused on the side of the tree the Moon is closest to? Or is the lighting provided by the Moon too intense?
>>
>>2843943
when you're as low level as most of the fuckers here who are trying to do pixel art to cover up the fact that you can't draw, going back to basics (you know, what Loomis is great for teaching) would do you guys a world of good more than helping you polish your turds

how the fuck does light work? you have the moon casting light from a 3/4 angle above and to the front of the fucking tree with an amazing fast fall off

stupid shit like that and the fire affecting apparently a small area around and MAAAAAAAAAAAAAGICFUCKINGALLY hitting the tree (with light that isn't fucking warm at all) show that you know shit all about how light fucking works to begin with

so yes
go back to loomis
learn to visualize shit and after a few years of that then you can focus on your bullshit "muh palettes and dithering" to polish your turds once more
>>
>>2843947
I don't think at any point have I claimed to be anything more than I am, which is something you seem to be implying here. I assume the problem here is you assuming my tone to be more arrogant defense rather than pure curiosity?

Learning from mistakes has pretty much been proven to be the best way for a human to learn shit, but in order for that to work, there needs to specifics. You can't really just go "lol you're shit" and expect someone to learn anything from it.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback, mate. Even though you seem real butthurt about giving it.

While you certainly have a point from a technical perspective, it is in no way beneficial to be condescending like you are. Tell me one thing- when you fail, does getting shit on encourage you to keep trying? This is a genuine question- I'm not implying anything here. I'm not to speak on the behalf of anybody- however, I do know, when I'm taking critizism like that, it neither inspires nor strengthens me in any way, whatsoever.
