How do perspective in my sketchbook when the vanshing points are off the page?

Tape more paper on. Or just mark the lines with a ruler and go from there.

why are people so fucked on trying to "make it"

Zyzz gave them a meme to dream when he turned dream into meme. It's mostly not serious, but fun to use because it gets you pumped and it's funny when autists take it to heart. I just want to be average as far as my own aesthetic tastes go and find my own voice to give my specific brand of degenerate boners with.

I don't know if this is the kind of question for this thread but what do I have to lose.

I did a paintover of someone's drawing for something simple but ended up going way past the goal and practically changed it into an entirely different picture. I spent enough time on it I want to get some use out of it. I'm not sure it would be useful to the person as a guideline anymore, in fact I really don't think it would be but you never know. I wouldn't put it on my gallery but I could at least get some critique on what I did if I post it in the draw thread. Should I post it for the original artist to see or should I post it in the drawthread and get a critique on it separately?

So months ago I was using a small Wacom intuos p s to dabble and complete art exercises of the sticky and the web, but now it stopped working. Tried everything. Maybe it's because I connected my pc to a TV screen and not a monitor

Imagine a spotlight shining directly down on top of a metallic sphere, so that as you move around the sphere the reflection from the spotlight seems with you. Now, instead of light particles, imagine that the spotlight is spewing out bouncy balls.

As the balls hit the sphere, they bounce off. If they hit a part of the sphere that you're in front of, they'll hit you when they bounce off, but no other balls will hit you, because you're not in their way. if you walk around the sphere, only the balls hitting whichever part of the sphere you face will hit you. Now imagine that you can only see the balls that are going to hit you, all the rest are invisible. if you walked around the sphere while doing this, it would appear that the stream of balls was following you, but in fact you're just seeing different balls as you move, creating an illusion.

That's how light works, light hitting an object will scatter in a wide area, but only the light hitting you(or your eyes, specifically) will be visible.

As for shadows, imagine the bottom of that sphere from before. you'll never be hit by a ball bouncing off the bottom of the sphere, because there aren't any balls hitting it there, a "bouncy ball shadow" if you will. you'd have to move the spotlight for that to happen.

So, in conclusion, reflections change relative to the viewer, but shadows only change relative to the light source itself. I hope this helped.

working on collecting the beginners list of books. What am i missing out of what i have? I ask because my mother wants me to give her a list of shit i want for christmas and if i can do better than just sketchbooks. im going to.

what i have so far

Keys to Drawing
Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain
Perspective Made Easy
Fun with a Pencil
Figure Drawing for all its Worth
Drawing the Heads and Hands

The only one i was looking at to add was
The Natural Way to Draw: A Working Plan for Art Study

Should i just stop here? Is there a book or two i could add?

Any recommendations on books or courses for art history?

I want to be able to respond adequately when given a series of paintings. I have almost zero knowledge of art, so any advice will be great thanks.
>>
>>2758358
i've heard that e.h gombrich's book does a good job of providing an overview, it was written in the 50's though so the scope is limited. there's probably a good mooc that covers all the basics. i've been going through a couple that are more focused and they've been fascinating
>>
>>2758358
Use wikipedia to get an understanding of the general art movements and the artists involved, researching individual artists further on your own. You should be able to recognize at a glance what time period a painting was done when you are shown it.

For specific analysis of pieces Khan Academy has some series of free short videos on art history. They're a bit limited in scope and a bit cursory, but they are still pretty good.

so what's the point of learning to stop symbol drawing? turning your brain off and putting down lines exactly where they are in whatever it is you're observing teaches you better observation skills, but once you go off to making your own characters in unique poses you won't be able to at all, since all you've been doing is turning your brain off and photocopying lines.

so you look up various poses for references and use those but again, you can't symbol draw, so all you know is 1:1 line placements.

I guess my question is why does it feel like observational drawings and proper figure construction are two entirely separate things? when you draw a person's portrait you don't draw a circle, then the hairline eye line etc, you just turn your brain off and draw 1:1 observed lines and tones since you're drawing from life and the construction is inherit in their bones and bodies, but when there's nothing to observe except what you're "seeing" in your mind, what then?
>>
>>2758518
Before you can truly be effective at symbol drawing from imagination, you need to be able to effectively produce realistic copies of what you see from the real world.
>>
>>2758518
You shouldn't be turning off your brain when you do observational drawings, you should be learning.
>>
Everyone says I should follow Loomis but what did Loomis follow?

Is there any benefit from learning how to draw without any teachings?
>>
>>2758529
you learn everything through trial and error.
>>
How does hyper perspective in studio Gainax style works? I already know the basics of perspective, i can't figure how they manage to get such dynamic perspectives and still mantain the proportions.
>>
>>2758529
Loomis had a classical education copying the old masters and grinding draftsmanship alongside study of anatomy and figure with real live naked women and real dead corpses.

Without cracking a book or taking a class, you're still presumably looking at someone's art and using something from it, just without all the useful bits as to why attached.

Weird Question here.

I draw ecorche, but it always looks flat and anatomically incorrect. I want to achieve something like this where its not ecorche, but the muscles stick out. And Im trying to do it through linework and no rendering whatsoever.

Ive looked at (pic), peter paul ruben drawings, h george bridgman, and burne hogarth, and drawings of the hulk to try to get this effect. But I cant describe how its done.

So basically, Im wondering how someone like alphanso dunn or peter paul ruben knew the form so well for individual muscles and they dont look flat.

oh, and how to draw strong people too.

as long as you're honest about it i don't see why it's a problem. if it still bears too much resemblance to the original, give credit where it's due. if you think it's different enough, post it without commentary, and if you get called out just admit to it.

>>
>>2758338

I'm pretty mentally ill but I'm on meds now so I can function, and honestly Anon, if you have two panic attacks a week I think you should probably take some sort of meds. All that stress is just killing you and probably makes the process of creating art more miserable than it should be.

As for making art, when I stop being lazy and actually try to make something I'm fine. If I wasn't on meds I would probably be more stressed and insecure about my art. Always remember to go at your own pace, and this applies to everything.

Also in case you're wondering no I don't think the meds made me lazier....probably.

Why do you think that? Just get a cheap screen-less one. If you really get into it, then get the fancy one you want.

I only tried it for a tiny bit a long time ago, but I think drawing while not seeing the drawing being made directly from my hand was kind of weird and I probably wouldn't do as good of job that way.

The more time I spent on it the more I felt like I wasted my time. Just painting over it without laying down my own structural guidelines left the structure all fucked up. The rendering is probably mediocre at best; I'm pretty sure the lighting is inconsistent and edges and texture are weak. At this point I don't want to either show it in an attempt to help the other anon or as something for critique. Satisfying one person's curiosity is all this thing will be good for but that's enough for me to not feel like it was a total waste so thank you anon.

I'm of the opinion that learning on traditional media first is the best way and it's what I'd recommend. However when it comes to painting digitally I prefer Clip Studio over Photoshop because Clip Studio's tools function way more like traditional media. With Photoshop you need to learn a bunch of technical things to get certain looks. But I think learning Photoshop helps a lot with learning Clip Studio so it's really kind of open ended as to what to go with first. That's why I think it's best to focus on traditional media and fundamentals so you're not worrying about that on top of learning all this mechanical stuff. Just one opinion though.

1) How the hell do I stay on-model? Whats to be practiced to get better at capturing a style?

2) Im told my drawings are fundamentally bad, as if i did no construction, typically i start drawing with a gesture, use rounded forms like vilppu, it was recommended that I use angular geometric shapes, like boxes, ive tried and my drawings still seem awful, or even stiff. Whats needed to practice to get over this hump? starting over from scratch? learning from someone other than vilppu?

3) Is Drawing on the right side of the brain worth reading? is it really something that can help or is it just pseudo science and a waste of effort?

please, somebody help me.
>>
1 hour of basic exercises looks like 10 mins of effort for me and I'm never happy about it. Is this normal and does it get better eventually?
>>
Starting out are 10+ gestures a day decent
>>
>>2759686

It means that you aren't putting enough effort into those. Either work out to up your precision in those exercises or compound them to make more difficult exercises.

Say, the exercise with rotating a box and making a "sphere" out of them - try to do the same but with an arrow.

Or again, on blocky forms in perspective - try making some composition, say like pic related from letters.

It's good to find a site of some local atelier/school of drawing that prepares kids for architecture studies and then look at the gallery and see what kind of exercises they do.
>>
>>2759538
>3) Is Drawing on the right side of the brain worth reading?
is pretty good for people who think they can't draw it explain symbolic drawings and it also has some cool exercises to trick your mind for making drawing easier (for example drawing photos upside down, drawing negativr-space shapes, drawing with the eyes closed etc) plus the stuff on shutting off the 'analitic/rational' part of the brain it's interesting.

What exactly is a master study?

Is it just that I should be looking at old paintings and trying to recreate them? Is there a specific process I'm supposed to have in trying to learn from them? Any way to reliably do detail work in Corel Painter?

Is Loomis' construction method for heads (I haven't seen his body anatomy stuff yet) really good for beginners? I feel he's really wordy and doesn't give you specifics on what you should be practicing. I feel pretty lost when trying to replicate some of his stuff or just use his method.

What are other construction methods that are equally accurate, but maybe better explained/easier to follow? I don't mind putting in the work, I just feel like I don't know what work to put in with Loomis.

Picture unrelated.

Patreon kinda fucks over most copyright things people can throw at you (as unlikely as they are anyway, most companies don't give a shit, especially regarding porn) because you're not getting paid directly to draw that specific character, nor are you selling it to people. So it's a very grey ground, and as far as I've seen, pretty difficult for anyone to slap you with a lawsuit even if they cared enough to try.

So a lot of teachers, mostly Scott Robertson, stress the importance of being able to draw straight lines.

Why is this so important when a straight edge will always be present, either digitally or traditionally?
>>
>>2761079
It takes time to build up connections with clients. Especially if you are sending your work to art drop emails then there is a very high chance it won't be seen for months if it ever gets seen. Keep emailing and keep posting publicly, ideally getting your work on other sites like facebook too. Try to make connections/friendships with other artists and they can often give you a helping hand like mentioning if there is a job opening or giving you the email of an art director. Obviously make sure you are not coming across like you are using people to try to get work through them though--make friends and then see what happens.
>>
>>2761148

It's not about drawing a straight line, it's about the muscle control over your arm. It builds precision.

Which is important, but not as huge a deal as some teachers make it seem, thanks to the tools digital gives us. Pretty important for traditional, though.

I have a question.

Is it worth it going through Eric Olson's 16 week seminar on Perspective if you have Marshall Vandruff's videos? I have a data cap of 50gb and downloading Eric Olson would mean I will be without internet for an entire month. I really want to follow the ''git gud in a year guide''. Is Eric Olson fundamental irreplaceable?
>>
>>2761430

Get the Marshall Vandruff stuff now and begin working.

I'm 6 lectures deep in Olson and it is extensive as all fuck. So I suppose it's pretty thorough.

ANYWAY. You should get Marshall now and some books to read/work through. Over time, maybe the course of two or three months, parcel out your downloads of Olson if you think you need or want more. You know how you can only download specific chunks of stuff in torrent programs (I apologize for this insinuative question. I just wanted to be sure)? Get the stuff you can now and just pick up Olson by piecemeal.

You can totally learn perspective without Olson's lectures because a lot of other people have. It's just another good resource.
>>
>>2761439

I am about done with Vandruff, and it's been very useful. The thing is, when I look at Olson's individual files on the torrent, it seems like he deals with the same topics as Vandruff, but the seminar is way longer. Which is confusing, how in depth does he go? I think I'll try downloading a bit of it and finding out myself.

Thanks for the idea, Anon.

So I was thinking of studying for a degree in Graphic Design. I want to do creative work for a living and am very confident with my communication skills and business sense.

Okay, I'll level with you on this: he repeats himself and a lot of the lecture themes a looooooot. It's information dense but a lot of it is his old school style of teaching where the instructor lays out the information over and over and over.

As a person who has terrible ADHD and impulse problems and a tick where repeated phrases drive me batshit, it's a little much to take.

But it's thorough, is all I can say. He's very... Very, very thorough. You probably won't be privy to some kind of advanced secret knowledge he has that no one else does.

He's Station Point heavy and drills into that a lot.

>>
>>2758616
Ah, classic. You're learning anatomy and expect form to kinda come naturally, which is not going to happen. First learn how to draw form, then you can apply it.
The key to drawing anatomy right is to always subdue the smaller forms to the larger ones.
Start your session with drawing loads of random shapes and feel them using cross contour lines. Drawabox helps a mile.

>>2758603
They don't maintain the proportions, they break them while being very conscious about it. That's the privilege an artist gains after getting through Vandruff's perspective series, Scott Robertson's book and drawing about a million of boxes.

>>2760147
Recently I had a "click" with drawing hair and it went from a chore to a fun exercise.
Don't worry about hair and learn gesture the way it's described in Hampton's book or Vilppu's videos - guiding the eye in a rhythmic lines as if it were mere waves of water or air. After you're really, really good at this, you can apply it to drawing people, clothing and hair. There's no difference.

1. warm-up
2. studies
3. personal work

Start by warming up your muscles, straight lines, curves, form and shape, still life drawing, ellipses...
Get a good book and read through it, copying and analyzing photos. Watch a video lecture, apply it. Study anatomy, gesture, perspective etc.
Draw something fun. Don't leave out this part, it's vital. Draw porn, design a character for a video game you made up, anime, fanart, vehicle design, whatever. Have fun.
>>
I have a problem, /ic/, and it's a vicious circle that I can never seem to get out of.

>Draw something and see improvement (no matter how slight)
>Worry about drawing again in case there's no improvement or in case I've regressed
>Put off drawing for extended periods because of it
>Draw something and see improvement (no matter how slight)
>Rinse and repeat

It's not like I'm worried about letting anyone down or making a fool of myself because I'm the only one who sees them. Will this ever go away? It's like this for most of the things I learn, do or practice though and I end up surrounded by unfinished projects so it might be something of a deeper, underlying issue. I just would appreciate if anyone else had a similar experience and what happened about it/how they "fixed" it.

This is what I believe you are talking about.
Creating divisions so you know exactly where things are in your field of view and therefore know how far something is in relation to another object.
>>
>>2764525
Exactly.

Does that same principle would help me to depict a cube of YxYxY units on perspective?
>>
>>2764530
Definitely. Check out the other parts of that tutorial and it explains a lot about perspective in a quick and simple manner that you could have gain through reading a book.
>>
>>2764237
Do whatever, just do it to completion and keep working with what you learned. Keys should come first, working with shapes, forms and perspective next, and light reading in anything else on the side. FwaP wasn't to my taste but is okay--Michael Hampton is better for figure drawing, and anything to do with photoshop gets in the way of learning how to actually draw at that point.

>Also are there any milestones that a person should reach by a certain time?
If you put in continuous effort, you should be better than when you started after a year. It's hard to say much more than that. You should be halfway competent with most fundamentals. The second year is the most interesting milestone. You start getting diminishing returns and have very uneven skills, you've probably taken up painting and are improving slowly. None of your skills are reliable and this is the point that those that didn't give up a week in quit. It hits everyone differently. Some feel hopeless, others are too deep in the grind to notice the moment.

Right around the 2 year mark, something clicks while you're chopping wood or carrying water and everything comes together and makes more sense than it ever has. Everything levels up through symbiosis and and there is an ease that wasn't there before. Your skills level out and you start improving exponentially for a while.

This is assuming you're taking a well-rounded approach and actually focused on improving. This is more or less true across multiple disciplines like music and cooking. You're shit up to a point around two years in, then you get out of it all the work you've put in, only in a much greater volume. Practice right and fuck around productively and good things come out the other side, slack off and masturbate artistically and that's what you get back.

>>2764551
If you practice good habits, you get good habits in return. You understand your natural 'style' and it comes fully under your control. The downside is it's really easy to get complacent at this point and never improve. Everything you do from that there is much more subtle and difficult to master.

If you put in shitty effort and >muh style to practice and learning and manage to hit critical mass, that's what you get back and you either have to relearn everything the right way or become Dobson.

Ignoring the last part which is more the realm of rock guitarists and webcomic artists, you come to a point where the real work begins. You have to learn a different level of skills that take years to acquire as you begin working towards and eventually through a Journeyman level of work and once you get there, you have to fight off complacency or risk resting too heavily on your stylistic laurels.

Basically, you haven't got gud yet and it's easy to stop giving a fuck before you do.You're still an apprentice as far as skills go.

How do you start promoting your own artwork from scratch if the end goal is to make enough connection to get commissions?

How do you do it with the social media? How do i find the fanbase to tap into?

I've been using a genius mousepen 8x6 for years and I'm afraid it might die so I would like to start saving to get a replacement

You draw good stuff and post it. Someone will eventually see it and want a commission. Tagging in tumblr and twitter is good for social media. Never try to target fanbases, just draw good shit.

Thanks for the answer, anon.

So, regarding tagging stuff in social media. How do you do this part exactly when you're not doing something related to tv shows, video games, etc. ? I don't usually do fanarts and most of my stuff so far that i've uploaded are just random things that has nothing to do with any content from the pop culture(i live in 3rd world country, little exposure to western pop culture etc.). I don't mind start doing one, but i'm just curious about taking the next step. So is doing fanarts something that a beginner should do in order to gain some traction at the beginning?

pic is unrelated but it's mine.

How do I into landscape/nature/architecture painting? I can draw separate objects, but I just fuck up every time I try and make a full composition.
Any suggestions, books, tutorials to look into, preferably digital?

I've just started drawing gestures and I'm going to make them a daily thing.

Currently I'm doing 40 60s gestures a day. Should I work on increasing the amount or is this adequate for now?

The times on croquis cafe are more standard. Shorter gestures are good for working the rhythm, but 2-3 minute ones give you time to define the forms and put thought into every mark. I do 5-7 1-minute, some 3's because fuck being against the clock, then pick one I like, rework it and go deeper over like 10-15 minutes.

It's the quality and what you learn from them that matters. You get a lot from doing quicksketching, but it's when I slowed it down and worked out the flow of the forms that my quick sketches improved the most. 40 minutes is more than enough for gesture, just mix up what you do in that time.

Can you people give me a good study plan? I have a lot of free time this period but my problem with art is that I don't fucking know what to do to improve.
I'm not a total beginner (pic related is some stuff I did today) but still I don't know where to start. I feel like books are a bit useless but I fear that if I draw just random stuff everyday I'll never progress. Help me please
>>

>my problem with art is that I don't fucking know what to do to improve
Draw.

>I'm not a total beginner
Yes you are. Just keep drawing.

> like books are a bit useless
They are at your point of progress. Just keep drawing and draw more, I think this is the second time I see pic related. Try out stuff, do something fun, draw with intent.
>>
>>2765163
Thank you dude for responding but my problem is this, I really don't know what should I draw. I don't know to be able just to copy stuff, I want to build me a solid base, problem is that I don't know how to organise my routine. Should I draw 10 loomis heads, 5 braque canvas, etc. a day or should I stick to learn a think a week etc.? With what should I start?
I just need a rigid schedule to know what to do day by day
>>
>>2765175
Sorry for the typos. Also yeah I already posted that but if I remember correctly nobody responded to me
>>
>>2765175

Not that anon, but I think it's like this.

Draw the thing you've started drawing to draw. The thing is, you can do drills and copy from books all day, but you need to apply what you're learning and make mistakes.

Then when you've made those mistakes, go back and see what you could do to not make them.

That's what "drawing with intent" means. Have a reason, have a goal, and move towards that (those) goal(s).
>>
>>2765179
Probably I'll try getting into anatomy, first learning basic proportions, then head and then stundy in the deep the various parts. Should I just use references or read some books?
>>
How does Anon survive while training to be an artgod? Flip burguers? Or can you get a job becoming a hack like Feng or Maciej in a month and photobash a portfolio and then improve you art while you are already in the industry?

How do rounded shapes intersect?

For months, I've been trying to figure out how I can join rounded forms like spheres together to make something close to the picture on the left. All the clumps, folds and volume look so convincing, but I just can't understand how they did it. I tried learning from Drawabox, but they didn't make rounded/sphere intersections clear at all.
>>
>>2765156
A bargue copy should take more than a few days of hard work to finish, you aren't really getting the point of the exercise if you just doodle them out like that.
>>
>>2765187

You should definitely, if you haven't, stick with fundamentals as a basis for your work. Hit perspective hard if you haven't.

Apologies if that's presumptuous. I skipped them and suffered for it heavily. I'm old and can't draw shit.

References and books are hand in hand. Books will break down what you should be learning when you draw from life. It's a kind of... Two and one thing. Even technical books. You treat it like learning math or language in school. You'll do boring drills to put the methods to finding your answer or proper corrections and then have to apply them later.

Like... Breaking down a person you're drawing into a way that helps you understand why they're made up the way that they are rather than simply drawing them blindly.
>>
>>2765218

Where should I start with bargue plates?
>>
>>2765214

Have you tried copying the drawing that has the effect you want to achieve? Your own inventions doesn't look like anything like the reference. If you feel totally lost I suggest that you give tracing a try, it can help your eyes quite a bit. Keep in mind also that the particular style uses warying line weight to indicate differences in the forms in relation to each other.
>>
>>2765236

http://www.learning-to-see.co.uk/bargue-drawings

Do the eye plates first. They have no shading and quite simple. You'll still need considerable effort to get them just right though.

I'm just gonna copy and paste what I posted on /g/

I'm in need of a laptop and I want something with an active pen digitizer, since I like to draw and generally do art.
I currently have an x220 tablet, but with all the issues I've been having with it, I'm thinking about throwing it on ebay if I can find something better.
(issues: screen pressure spots, brittle and creaky plastics, rubber trim pieces falling off, very inaccurate digitizer, meh performance, chugs in applications like photoshop, 2.5-3.5 hours of battery life (at best) on power saver mode, etc)

The Elitebook 2760p looks seems to be better built, but has most of the same issues with performance and screen accuracy, the Dell XT3 is supposedly a time bomb before the digitizer dies, and the x230t is the same as what I have, just with a better cpu/graphics.
I don't mind buying used if it's in good shape, I just want something that'll work, and if new, I'd want decent warranties or support if in case something goes wrong, which is why I ruled out the Cube i7 stylus, as decent as that seems.
I have stand alone graphics tablets and they're fine, but I don't work as well with them as I do with an active display.

Anyone know of any good laptops or tablets (better than this at least) with an active digitizer for <$300?

what brushes could have been used to paint this skin? there's a very subtle texture to it, you can see it most on the shadow of the hair. the artist is chinese, so i'm guessing it might be one of the brushes they commonly use.
