Looking at it closely I think it's simple enough. it has pretty straight forward lighting and color; it's basically all local color and doesn't dive too deep into colorizing shadows and temperature control and things that would take more color theory. The rendering is pretty simple and sticks to 3 main values to show form, the lightest, midtone, and shadow. It's a clean, polished illustration without too many advanced flourishes. I think I can come close to matching it. Whether I do or don't that's where the feedback comes in. I'm only wondering whether to make my own thread for this or stick it in the draw thread or somewhere.

It's not bait. While reading back through the posts though I realized I muddled something. That picture isn't what the ultimate goal I would be aiming for would be but rather the starting point. I chose it for the starting point because it's the minimum I need to be able to do to start working toward the end goal I have in mind. The picture has virtually no color theory in it but I can tell what digital methods they used to create the look of light and shadow and I can practice that while I'm reading up on and practicing more advanced color theory. I'm not worried about the art being "wrong" in the sense of not looking like traditional master works or very realistic to start out with. My main problem is polishing work and I want to start with that. I can always add more complexity over time which is the whole point. And I love anime so I won't be avoiding its influence but I will be drawing in my own way.

In my case I didn't know I wanted be an actual artist until I was practically already graduating, and didn't know how to get there, at all. My art teachers didn't help, they had their favorites already (don't blame them, they didn't know me cause I had just joined art classes that year) and didn't have the focus or drive to get into one of the big schools on my own, figured if I couldn't do it at 18 then it wouldn't happen for me at all. I'm halfway through 24, and only thing I excel at is imaginative stuff but am worlds behind with most basics. I get mad at me for not being serious sooner too but don't exactly regret it- still learned a lot about myself the whole time bumbling around. And at least I never completely stopped, I'll give myself that much.
