Are you blind? It's a faux-van gogh, and colours manage to be way more fucking hideous than that deuteranope dutchman. A kid could find that maybe, you could have picked -even randomly- a combination of colors that is not so eyes-bleedingly offensive.

>>2745317
i'd say my value scale is pretty accurate, leaning towards brighter brights since digital is better at that than traditional. my darkest dark was a more mid tone blue than what he was using, but still pretty close. his blue was almost black, but i wanted to keep my palette a bit more chromatic than he made his.

>>
>>2745352
The setting and the lighting don't go well together.
It looks like you have about 4 different light sources all working against one another: one shining down upon the figure, behind her, the staff, and a random light on the right edge of town. Maybe 5 if you're going to put in some blue magic in her hand, which is what it seems like you were going to try. Too many light sources here.

Honestly, it may just be best to start over. You could keep the setting; it's cool and has a nice depth, but the background especially makes no sense to me. What's with this random light on the edge? Is there a fire? Is the sun setting? If it is, why is this blue light appearing behind the subject? Is there a storm? Too much missing information.

And the gargoyle is strangely lit as well. It has a stronger light source shining on it than the main figure, which is drawing my eye to this secondary character more so than keeping my focus on the awesome detail you put into the woman.

Cool concept, poor execution. Just try again, m8.
>>
>>2745352
I admire your commitment, however I think you might have muddied this piece with all the different lighting and having nowhere for the eye to rest and actually take in the detail

I'll forgive how silly that sounds.

Looking at the original, I think the brightest bright should be brighter, and darkest dark should be darker (slightly on both), but I'm not a fan of the direction you took it. That's of course, just like my opinion, man.
>>
>>2745375

Aye... I'm with you 100%. I'm all good with lighting a simple object/character with 2 lights but this was just too fucking complicated for me.

>>2745390

>>2745407
>>2745419

Cooling down the BG would also be a great idea along with killing the lighting on the gargoyle statue thingy (was going to do that anyway but it's still nice to see it pointed out). I might even try doing that just so I can get something out for fucking once.

I feel like I'm such an asshole posting this shit here when I know It's not really going to work even though people are going to help me but I fucking need to see how I fucked up from another point of view just so I can grow. I hope you guys don't feel like I'm wasting your time here.

I fucking hate myself for the shit that I'm trying to put out. It's like I can do all the parts that would probably make a good/mediocre illustration but I can't put it all together. I can do a fucking portrait of a monster or a spaceship with 1 light or what ever as long as it's just that BUT when ever there needs to be an elaborate background I just fuck up... Any tutorials or whatever on Youtube or somewhere that I should watch?

Sorry for the Tl;dr rant and thanks guys... Feels Bad Man...

also, for further reference, here's a hue comparison. Yours is more 'chromatic' as you said, but most colors are also shifted. This may have been on purpose, I have an appreciation for radical colors thrown into paintings, but I'm not sure what the purpose of the study was if you changed the value, hue and construction.

I guess my point is, this doesn't seem to be a study anymore, just an experiment. And that's fine, but it's helpful to you to realize that.
>>
>>2745434
Do some modern master studies
>>
>>2745434
You're being a bit hard on yourself. This wasn't necessarily bad, just the lighting was the biggest issue. You have a good grasp on fundamentals as far and perspective (which is the hardest thing to grasp imo). Honestly, the best help you can get are by doing master studies. Find a decent painting by a "master" and try to replicate what they've done. For example, if you struggle with backgrounds try painting a Thomas Moran. He has excellent use of light and color.
>>
>>2745444
>>2745446

Will be doing this. I might even finish the piece just so I'll finally have sme shit in my portfolio even though I don't think it's really worth it. I'm also going to go back to 3D shit because it's basically an easy fix to most of my issues. Plotting a scene in Softimage or 3dsMax is much easier than Photoshop and making believable texture with perspective in ZBrush is a also a lot easier... I can't thank all of you guys enough though. You's the mans.

so I tried to super simplify this entire thing into its core values.

Pay attention to the proportions, the angle and the features of the face. The face is too large, the neck is out of place, the ear has a slight tilt to it which suggests a different perspective. Make sure you pay attention to the head as well.

Primary changes:
I changed the values, so as to set up better lighting, you're guessing WAY TOO MUCH you need to stick to lighting that works around form a lot better, I would recommend learning the rembrant lighting method for starters before expanding into the butterfly method or any other lighting set up.

Green: Simplify rendering on hair, where is it dark, where is it light you need to squint, add basic highlight in a line using a textured brush, use a hairbrush/texture brush to brush our the hair through the hightlight.

red: Added rembrandt lighting method to build form

yellow: fix feature line - add bounce light in shadow mass.

blue: simplify values on the nose.

purple: add light in areas such as the side of the lip to show form.

pink: simplify the clothing to a 2 value 2 color system and add details on top.

Added a lit ball as reference, you should get to know all the different aspects of the anatomy of light. Core shadow, bounce light, direct light, highlight, occlusion shadow. If you don't know about these things and/or dont think about it whilst rendering then it can have an impact on your work.

You set a lot up so good job, good colors, and it is a decent attempt. Practice lots and familiarise yourself with the painting process.

>Because he was concentrating on fundamentals, not idle rendering.

>hitler is always concentrating fundamentals

Even then, although his version is superior on some aspects, (like representing hitler-kun instead of amerifat), his version is really cartoony, and the anatomy is far from great. Just look at the neck, and the weird way he seems to be standing. If you're so concerned about fundamentals, why don't you care about these proportions, tiny head?

You're right - it may be too late to incorporate shadows to help define stuff.

An alternative solution is to use a thicker line weight. You already have a thicker line weight around a lot of wholesome forms. I'd recommend going in with a line weight 2 or times thicker than that to help outline to most important forms and structures. Pic related is an example of that.

Just something I would do!

I don't do stylized stuff like this myself, so maybe I'm not the best at it or am pushing it in my own direction. I think in general though you can push the values slightly more in places and try to think more about the forms of the head and features. Don't forget small accents like speculars in the eyes, or darks in the corners of the mouth.

>Really appreciate it, man
No problem.

> I knew it needed more value variety but I wasn't sure how far to go in either light or dark direction
If you are uncertain then the safest way is to start with middle values and creep out to the extremes through glazing. You also can paint it out and if you are uncertain then use a levels adjustment layer and test how it looks with things shifted a bit. For things like specular highlights it's often a good idea to paint them on a new layer near the end, and then you have a lot more control what their strength is.
>>
>>2746487
Oh cool, I never thought of using adjustment layers like that before. Thanks for the tip, I'll try that when I inevitably get stuck again.

anon there's no such thing in art as a "value edge"... there's value and edges, but there's no such thing as a "value edge"

that being said that anon needs to improve his color form, and if he worked on his shading shapes or negative edges he'd be on his way to some great paintings

>>
>>2747157
>color form
You get after him for saying value edge when you go on to say color form. I think value edge makes sense since and edge occurs between two values, and he is differentiating it from other edges like between two colors of the same value.
>>
>>2747157
This!! You need to work some more on the composition control as well.
>>
>>2747162

If you're just using an opaque square hard brush like that, then I think you need to design your shapes a bit more. For example, look at how uniform many of your shapes are like all the rimlights being uniform in width and strength. Your highlights are just the brush shape too, and the hair was all painted with one size and shape of brush. Maybe look at guys like Mielgo and see how they play with shapes and make them more designed and interesting and get more variety in there.

How do I strike a good balance between form and strict observation?

I keep dancing between the two, and it's really distracting me, so I can't really put all of my mental energy into one or the other.

Is the best thing to do is to do it once from observation, and then mentally wrap your brain around what you've drawn?

REEEE STOP POSTING-

Anyway love the general vibe, very oldschool book cover. Worried that the ships in the background fuck with the silhouette, though, you might want to at least screw with the back ship by applying a little atmospheric perspective to it. Just a thought.

The girl's face doesn't stand up to closer inspection, either, but you're not quite done with it.
>>
>>2747621
Very impressive, I like it. Are you a working artist?
>>
>>2747621
Honestly I think you really completely lost your way when doing this piece. Instead of fixing issues, you introduced new ones.
If you wanted it to be busy, you should expand the canvas and give more room to breathe. It's just not so appealing than the simpler versions you had.
Sure, the thumb reads, but when looking the full size I find it really confused.

And yet the sausage legs of the gunner are still there, as well as the strange leg proportions of the legs, etc etc.
>>
>>2747621
push the ships back by desaturating them and iintroduce clouds to break them from the foreground even further because its cluttered right now
>>
>>2747648
I will seriously consider expanding the canvas, that's something I haven't thought of.

As for the sausage legs, the guy is supposed to be like a doll... thing, so his legs are made of fabric stuffed with shit and his knees are kindof just stitched to form joints, and with all that in mind he doesn't follow traditional proportions. Is that what you're getting at?

As for the girl I haven't touched her in months. She'll be last but I'm keeping track of the criticisms.

If I can be brutally honest.
Your problem doesn't lie just on the colors.
You need a lot of improvement on your linework and you should choose between animu and conventinonal caricature, both aren't working at all.
But if you want to discuss just the colors, this kind of coloring doesn't suit the style at all.
You're at risk of ending up like one of those wikihow pictures.

Yeah I would listen to anything you had to tell me. I did what I normally do in my fanart drawings, like I'm completely clueless what I am doing here.

maybe if that guy could learn to draw a face i wouldn't have to fix every single one. doesn't help his canvas size is super tiny so im literally drawing the face with pixels.

i did more to this, pushed the values and added a background.

Hey anon thanks again for the paintover, I think helped my decision making a lot. I studied it for a good long while looking at value and temperature and how you defined the forms. I still want to see if I can finish the one you edited but I did another one to experiment with what I tried to learn from your edit and though this still isn't great I think the value breakdown is much better, even though it's oversaturated. Maybe now I can use your adjustment layer tip. Just thought I'd share my progress. I won't bug you for another paintover but thanks for the advice you gave or might give, I appreciate it.

How can you not tell that there aren't nearly enough mistimed in your painting? Everything is all white or black around the edges or with random ines tossed in. Well, I can see _that_. But what are the lines below the two busts? Do you think anybody could make sense of those lines? Maybe you should crop it, but it cannot be parsed as a volume.

What do you guys think?

Is it flat even for a photo study?

Were the muscles created incorrectly?
>>
>>2749287
Also, this is less of an observational study and more of trying to hit the forms in the picture I'm looking at. I have a huge issue where I know where the muscles insert, but I don't know how to really construct them. I'm trying to fix that by studying photographs and various references/books.

>>
>>2749969
I basically meant doing the reverse of a life study on a gray scale. When you do a life study in black and white, you get a scale of values derived from the colors before your eyes.

What I thought you're doing is taking those black and white values and trying to apply color to them to further ingrain it into your mind.
>>
>>2749905
Look at your own body but negate your rib cage.
Look at the pit of your clavicle, and pretend your Trapezius isn't there.

You get a square like he's showing you. Then just bring that flatness above the sphere of the rib cage down. That's the shoulder girdle. The deltoid inserts along the frontal 1/3 of the clavicle, and the back of the trapezius/scapulae

Look at this biodigital human if you need help seeing where everything connects:

You should make sure the colors you're using look good together before you drop hours painting them. Compounding matters, you obviously really don't know how to draw, and you should refrain from creating abominations such as this. It looks like you're wasting a shit load of time creating ugly paintings because you're exercising an incredibly inefficient technique that you've made up.

You're better of downloading/watching a bunch of Ctrl Paint videos before you continue to do this stupid shit.
