How important is the skill of freehand straight-line drawing? I mean, I can draw straight lines but not without the help of any straightedges. If rulers are always available, is freehanding really THAT important?

Depends what type of art you want to do, but in most cases it's less important than you may think.
You should be able to make whatever type of line you want. So whatever it takes you to achieve that. Yeah you can use a straight edge, but it will slow you down.
It's important in terms of being able to make a quick confident straight when you want to without having to pull out a ruler. Same as being able to draw a circle without a tool.
Think of it like being able to figure out what you're going to tip after a meal without needing to break out your calculator. It's convenient even if the calculator can do the job. It's just convent, and it's good for your workflow to not have to interrupt it.
what the fuck? do none of you idiots actually care about draughtsmanship?
