I appreciate the effort because it's been a while since we had a study thread, but you just had to go and use a generic pretty girl again. They're always the same shit.

Try slowing wayyyy down. Use a pencil and draw in lightly the main proportions getting it as accurate as you can. They build upon that a bit darker and put in the details. You're rushing and making all these sloppy lines that aren't even placed correctly.

I agree, but the "post any image of old wrinkly skin to balance it out" thing is just as generic imo.

Also study threads with more than two references fucking trigger me. It's missing the point.

Well I didn't post those other images. I think it should have been started with a more interesting initial picture, doesn't even need to be a photo it can be something like a master painting too.

I'm kind of a beginner, so sorry for the stupid question but

I've done mostly figure drawings and faces and I'm currently trying to get into environmental stuff.

The question I have is: Where do I even begin with something like this?

Do I just place rough shapes onto the canvas and then "cut" the objects out of it and add the shading?

I don't know how to do it.
>>
>>2743362
start where you feel like starting it really doesn't matter
>>
>>2743362
Same as in Figure or Portraiture, you can block in with line, or tone, or both.

>>
>>2743823
No lines, no. A good start is to paint on a canvas which is homothetic to your reference. Be more precise with your colors? It will be fine.
>>
>>2743840
I'll try to be more precise next time, I just decided to push the colors and squint my eyes more. What do you mean homothetic?
>>
>>2743846
Your reference is a 500*400px image, use the same format or the same ratio. Maybe your can use way bigger brush. Also, at the beginning, fill your canvas with a color.
>>
>>2743867
Ok, I'll do that next time, thank you. Do you know what kinda brush that anon used before, by the way?

>>2744380
>>2744384
I'd say without the filter. I think it'd be cool to get some nice textures in there, but I don't think that particular overlay is the best approach for the job.
>>
>>2744380

Not feeling the filter. Really good job. Missing a few details usually happens with this, I don't think it's particularly egregious that you went a bit rogue on facial features like the eyebrows. Something you should think about however is that you went way easy on the reds and emphasized the yellows

>doing right
For someone new to art (you have some obvious experience already :^) ) , I think you're doing a great job of confidently laying down strokes and clearly defining dominating shapes.

>doing wrong
I would personally avoid jumping into fine details (around the nose/nose ring) before getting other things worked out. Working big -> small is always a solid way to work.

>learn first
Since there's not much to go off, I'm not entirely sure what your biggest weaknesses may be. Would you consider working on it a bit more and posting it then?

Very nice, must be the first one in here to properly capture the highlights. Textile looks good too, got some good reds in there. Only crit is that you didn't quite capture the waxy glow of the nose. Lower-key highlights and a little more desaturated browns could've helped to help the reds stand out. >>2744380 kinda got it.

>>
>>2747664
Really not bad for being very new. You're obviously trying to draw what you see rather than what you think you see.

I can't see anything suggesting you did any construction, though. Do you understand what I mean by that? It looks like you're drawing it feature-by-feature, instead of building the framework from a head and drawing on top of that.

That's what Loomis is (and other approaches to head construction, you don't have to do Loomis) - it's a standard base you can memorize to help in the construction of heads.

Hope that helps!

If people are going to post images to study from can there be an effort to make the references at least somewhat good, too often images are low quality or with unclear light sources. If looking around is hard at least fuck off to /hr/ and back.

The metadata your phone uses to remember the rotation has been used in the past to smuggle CP, so 4chan deletes it from images that get uploaded.

There are no tutorials you can follow for basic fundamentals.

And those would be lessons, not tutorials.
His point stands.
You're not going to learn how to draw by just looking at tutorials akin to "How to draw eyes", "How to paint flowers" "How to colour skin".
They're just superficial techniques that might work in specific usage cases.
Fundamentals would be the equivalent of knowing how the light that hits the skin/flower works. How it creates the various colour and value relationships, and how to replicate those in whatever medium you're using.
Or things like how to draw the eye, comes from knowledge of general anatomy, for this case being the head, and then adequate understanding of perspective to be able to place those features correctly.
There are no tutorials for this sort of thing, because it's not a skill that can be taught like that. It's too vast in subject matter and knowledge.
Not like a tutorial for how to knot a tie, just learn one thing and replicate.
That's why you learn the basics to be able to understand and extrapolate from the bottom, you learn essentially the common sense attached to painting, it's like another language, with it's own grammar and spelling, only in visual format.
Try to find some tutorials for learning a language, and see how much luck you have outside of getting some basic phrases for tourists.
If all you want to be is a tourist when you draw or paint then be my guest.

I'm liking on your pic, but want to make sure you're not just using fun colors to avoid studying true colors.

Look at the folds. Try to draw/paint what you see. Also helps me to count and group the rolls, ie: three main rolls going down to the sholder, and then the edge of the hood on the left, and the back on the right.

If you want to go crazy you could zoom in further and paint the hair, cloth, and skin. Add texture and detail by studying the photo I mean. Otherwise it's pretty good by my eyes.

Fun colors like looking in a rave themed kaleidescope vs true colors like looking at real life with real light properties.

Naw, that's just because I'm an impatient sod, and wanted to practice painting. I'm practicing the usual basics of construction & anatomy elsewhere.
