Something's broken, what do I do?

>The site is currently in the alpha phase of development and is being built around us as we compete so sometimes things go wrong. If you ever need any help send me a tweet @LavaFlake or shoot me an email [email protected].

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

Also critiquing is kinda hard. It does require making yourself vulnerable, in a matter, and at least 1/2 the time it just fucking crashes and burns, with either party turning hostile on a dime, or you get completely snubbed.

I mean Deviant Art autists crying about mean opinions gets rightfully memed, but in a more peer based community like /ic/ it's a grey area.

And 1/2 of the remaining time it's still a wasted effort because you're criticizing direction that was done on purpose or the like. Unsolicited advice, like this initiative, tends to do that.

I think a comment. As opposed to a crit would be better. I.e. Its fine if people just say something simple like "I like the colors" or "cool concept" because even that builds a sense of community. The way things are now, it's kinda just like dumping your art into the void and the same 1 or 2 people get mentioned on repeat. I've done my daily task and now I've done the first challenge. The one where you need to draw your workspace and if I upload that one, it replaces the other one I've done today. I see Entrants in every challenge, but now way to enter the challenge, the fuck? Am I retarded?

When people see your work and say "it's shit, read sticky(a general guide for everything)" you cannot take that comment seriously.
There are many topics in which the artist might've made mistakes at (perspective, colour, anatomy, line, composition) and technically saying "it's shit, read sticky" is correct because it offers the artist a way to improve, it doesn't say where he needs improving.

Constructive criticism helps the artist in question to see his own mistake and develop.

You might as well say "thin your paints" even though it might have nothing to do with a drawing that was made in charcoal although he might need it for his future miniature painting hobby.

Cath, your "Furry Reading a Book" could use some adjusted lighting. According to the shadows the light's coming from top-left-front-ish while the hand on our left is almost entirely dark instead of having some light on the first knuckles at least. Your method of shading/rendering could be improved as well, because having the lightest and darkest areas on opposite sides of the form don't make it look very 3-d. Instead you could look at cylinders and see how the light often falls on an in-between area and how that makes it look more curved.
Also that cup is flat as a pancake.

If you want critique on your work visit the Discord it has a critique channel.

Yes.

What's wrong is the more knowledge you get, the more you notice that your work is deeply flawed and there's so much wrong with it.

So your solution is to dig deeper into knowledge to identify what exactly is wrong and how to fix it. Then you work through that until the wrinkles are smoothed out.

Sometimes you even know what you should be doing, but not how to do it. So just do a lot of shit and try different solutions.

In the end, the fact you're still drawing at all will push you ahead a smidgen. Especially if you're mindful of your mistakes. Too many people in general just get to a point where they stop seeing because they don't know and they keep making literal shit. Not "shit" in their opinion. But objective shit.

Ok here's how it works. When you learned to ride a bike, did you have to keep obtaining more and more knowledge on how to balance your body? No. Eventually your brain just pieced the rest of the puzzle together intuitively and you figured out how to ride your bike.

Drawing is the same way. You've just got to get out of your own way and give your brain a chance to just "click" one day and understand how it all works.

One day without understanding why or how, you will understand how to pick the right colors. You will understand how to draw perfectly. It won't make any sense how this happens but you'll just be able to do it.

This belief that you have to keep studying and studying is an insecurity. Drawing isn't THAT hard. It's not rocket science.

If you keep breaking down drawing more, into more advanced things to study, it is like breaking down how to balance on a bike to the study of advanced physics equations on how your body balances itself on a bike. Eventually you're just distracting yourself from learning how it works by over focusing on a bunch of unnecessarily complicated knowledge that makes it significantly harder for your brain to figure out how to do it easily because its distracted by this extremely overly complicated perspective you're trying to feed it.

When vanishing points are too close to each other, then you get a lot of distortion. That's a common thing among amateurs; stop doing that.
To comfortably use vanishing points that are too far away to put them on the paper, learn how to draw perspective grids. In Robertson's book "How to Draw" there's a whole chapter explaining step by step how to use them.

you have to estimate it. Mentally place our vanishing points somewhere off the page and try to get your lines to point toward them. Or draw a medium sized square on your paper and a line through it, make that your horizon line. Then you can make your vps outside of the square canvas to get an idea of how perspective would work if the vps weren't on the canvas.

All of the lines are wobbly so even if the perspective was perfect, they wouldn't properly convey the rigid form of those man made objects. Tbh "Fun with a pencil" is a shitty book. Yes, it teaches basics of construction, which is very important, but there are better books about this subject: "Figure drawing" by Hampton or "How to draw" by Robertson for example. Check them out maybe.

As for your more recent studies, I see that you're working through Charles Bargue "Drawing Course".
I'm not sure is it a good idea to work on it in random order; first plates (those with eyes and faces) would teach you how to draw in proportion, without worrying you about rendering. Generally speaking it's easier to learn one thing at a time, and according to pic related, you would benefit from learning more about proportions and measuring (book "Keys to Drawing" have some nice tips about accurately capturing proportions).

Oh, and I asked if you're using graphite pencils, because on your previous submission it looked a bit shiny in dark places. Maybe consider buying yourself some charcoal pencils? You'll avoid that shiny effect and getting pure black will be much easier and faster.
