Bring us your roughs, your storyboards, your pencil tests etc. Talk about industry, schools, the hopelessness of it all, how we all gonna make it etc.

If you're gonna post animation that isn't yours give source or state that it isn't yours.

Keep shitposting to a minimum. Don't feed the trolls.

Buy a transparent clipboard.

Buy a couple feet of white LED strip.

Put all toghether.

Put in table.

All below $20

Plus it's portable.

Yea, but I want a sexy table. Nothing too large, and I'd like one of those plexiglass animation disc.

Budget isn't a concern, but at the same time I don't want to spend too much on one.

Newfag here, making my way through Animator's survival kit.
Is this the correct way to do simple animation?
>lay down the keys
>lay down an inbetween timed evenly but spaced closer to the still phase
>repeat step 2 until good

Also, is it a good idea to do 24 or 12 frame animation? It seems stupid, you can't break it down into frames with even timing.

>is it a good idea to do 24 or 12 frame animation?

I would just stick to 24 fps and shoot it on 2s which makes it the same as if you chose 12fps but also gives you the option of making some frames 1s for when theres a really fast motion.
>>
I want to learn ToonBoom but the trial is only 21 days, why is this software so hard to get for "hobbyists", the limited version of the software is $300 so I was considering buying it but I don't think 21 days is enough to make my mind up when I have been using flash for so many years.

Here's something I made while trying to learn it.

Keep the body in one spot as if he's walking on a thread mill at a steady pace. Your frames are sliding forward and backward for no good reason. Fix the lines too and make them have a consistent thickness, although this can have a artistic effect if that's what you're going for it hurts the readability.

Lots of flaws, but you can start by working with fewer frames and try to work on making better keyframes with the up, down etc. positions of a walk. I took your animation and removed your weirdest looking ones. It looks a bit better but obviously a lot of work to do still

>>2743764
what's your skill level? besides the obvious things like practice every day (on top of drawing practice) and survival kit exercises, it depends what you hope to focus on. though is there really anything other than character animation? most backgrounds are pretty still, though it would be interesting to see someone who wants to focus on environment animations that don't have to do with a character.

Can I talk about how awful the animation industry is. It was proven recently of how Sausage Party didn't credit half of their animators. And I think they pointed this out on Rebel Taxi's Pizza Party Podcast about how animators sometimes never get to show their full talent. Like they just animate an arm moving and get a shitty pay. As someone who really appreciates animation, I sure do think it's a fucked business.
>>
>>2744446
Yeah. I initially wanted to work in it but I've pivoted toward storyboarding or just pursuing independent animation on my own. Kinda like Don hertzfelt does. No corporate animated movies even come close to his work imo and he uses like minimal animation to get the point across. If people took chances and let new animators helm stuff I think the industry would be in a much better place now.
>>
>>2744446
The internet allows for creative talents to get together and both make a living and be creative at the same time no? Of course mainstream Hollywood big budget animation must suck with all the deadlines and budget pressures and all of that since there's literally millions of dollars on the line and hundreds of people involved. More money involved = less risks taken, and being creative is literally taking risk and straying from the established path.

Of course this is no excuse for the shit that goes on like what you said with Sausage Party. Unfortunately artists are always very easy to be taken advantage of by men in suits and this will never change.

MOAR
>>
>>2745236
I know this might be an unpopular opinion but I really hate how he animates everything on 1s, it makes everything look weird and floaty
>>
>>2745258
Yea i don't know what it is about it but i prefer twos for regular actions. However is the camera is panning and the character is walking/running, it only works on ones. Othewise on twos since camera is moving and everything else is still you get a jittering motion. Otherwise I like the twos.
>>
>>2744446
This is the reality of working on a big production that requires so much manpower. How naive can you get?
I'm with you that they need to credit everyone though.
>>
>>2745258
>>2745371
I like the aesthetic. It has this element of transfiguration in the poses even though they are consistent
>>
>>2741968
Make that final frame about a second longer. I imagine the "BUMP" is the main focus of the animation, so you want people to be able to read it.

You could either draw another two frames and just repeat the three of them, or you could just extend the final one.
>>
>>2742690
Love it. I love how in some frames you've only done the outline of the body. Adds A LOT stylistically, keep it up.

I got a piece of 12" x 12" white smoked plexiglass from Amazon for 5 bucks. Shipping was $7 though.

For the pegs, I made a rubber mold from the portable light boxes at my school, and have plastic to make as many peg bars as I want.

Still don't know how I'm gonna make the box though, or if I want to go to a hardware store or some place to cut the plexiglass into a circle. I want to make it as portable as possible without going over $40 (I already had the molding and casting stuff for something else but that stuff is over 60$ and that's not even talking about dyes or transparent plastic)

I've been meaning to say this but I can never sit through Richard Williams' stuff.

I think its both my fault as the viewer and his tho. I beleive Williams work communicates something beyond movement, and I walk in expecting to see something friendly. His work is not friendly at all. The characters move like demons. They have no beat to them. I wouldn't say they're lifeless, no, but they are hellish in a way.

Could be my simply being overwhelmed by the amount of work that went into it, but maybe Williams is also satan. maybe he has seen death and communicates it in his work. Maybe thats why he animates it all in 1s- there is no breathe for the viewer. You must see his energy without pause, that which constantly moves, lurching, mocking real life...

I dont think he draws for the viewer in mind at all. I think he is literally a demon. He is the Zdzislaw Beksinski of animation.

>Try exploring other angles, it makes things interesting.
>The way she acts goes off the way humans behave. There seems to be close to no surprise upon the sandstorm and, when talking, people move their body in a way to express their feelings.

Learn from the world around you and it's slight nuances, the way people talk, the way they move, everything is key.
Look into some key frames from animes, like evangelion and Gundam (there's a thread on /t/ with art books, look it up).

I figured that it could be done because we use a shitty ceiling-mount projector and it won't catch all the details of the far shots anyway and just make the two little buggers like in pic related

The close ups, I have no excuse for them. I see your point on angles

I thought "It's a yuge wall of sand.. I'm sure they'll be fine" then I looked through what they could do and that quickly changed. Maybe I should have them notice the big cloud of doom and book it back to their homestead and play out "Black Sunday"

the last bit was supposed to be her running to the kid and step on the front of her dress, trip, then quickly scurry to shield the kid from harm, but that has to change.

Again, thank you, and sorry if it sounds like I spewed bullshit trying to justify my crap.
>>
>>2748449
Thanks, that's the kind of stuff I'd like to avoid. OpenToonz freezes or crashes occasionally as well, and I can't paste pictures from other programs. I'd really prefer to draw and colour in different program and paste all my frames into the animation studio. OT has shit drawing tools as well.
>>
>>2749078
No, you made yourself pretty clear and concise.

Even if it's a shitty projector in the shittiest possible conditions you should do a good work. Don't be lazy, it'll sure bite you in the ass since your next step will ask for that.

Also, make EVERY FUCKING SECOND count, tell the most with as little time you can. Make frames with more story telling, be creative.

It seems like it's for uni/school, so you have to show potential. Put every thing in a touching, well done, short story. Remember you're not working with audio, so it's harder to transmit emotion.

Focus on the things that people care most, don't forget the details that people like and notice even in second plane. Add Easter eggs, like a sand Pepe really... really light, for example, those who see it will forever remember the Easter egg, even if little and in the clothing. It doesn't even need to be an easter egg, just make something memorable.

No, it's for high school.

I've always loved adding little stuff like that, but I'll put those in after the bigger stuff is taken care of.
>>
>>2749112
Yeah, tackle the big problems first and keep going down to the small ones.

I'd do every thing in 1:30 at most. You probably never actually animated to completion, so you probably don't know how time consuming it is.

Things like in and out of focus layer really catch attention in a good way, that is, if done right, being quite simple to do as well.

Look into Gobelins animation school's student's graduation works, they are really simple and short, but not even close to plain and lacking content.

Windows defender(if on windows), Malwarebytes, Sandboxie. Literally all you need.

Those still give you a false positive for keygens though, don't they? That still makes it chancy to trust what you're downloading.

Kill Windows
Get gentoo

But for real, check drivers, try downgrading them and try reinstalling OS if it persists. Check on another computer to see if the problem is not the tablet itself.
>>
>>2752153
I'm still very much a beginner as well. I've only done a few basic ball bouncing and head turning exercises a few months ago, and now my friend wants me to help him make some key frames for a simple cartoon he's doing, so I decided to get back into it.
I'm not looking for much. I just need onion skinning, multiple animation layers if I need to animate something with different moving parts, some sort of x-sheet layout to organize the scenes, and the ability to copy/paste or import external images.
OT can do most of that stuff, but aside from being buggy, I found that I can't copy or import any external images into it, so if I want to draw over an existing frame as an underlay, I can't import it into OT. Also, the drawing tools for OT feel pretty limited, but that'll be more of an issue when I get better at drawing/animating.
>>
>>2752477
I think the problem is that when u draw with the tablet it goes into pressure sensitive mode, and stays that way for about 2 seconds after u take away the pen. When the script tries to click on the eraser size GUI, or eraser opacity GUI, the pressure sensitivity is at 0 because I'm not actually drawing so it can't click it.

If I use mouse instead of tablet to draw the pressure sensitivity turns off so the script works then since sensitivity is always at 100%.
Unfortunately I'm not sure there's a solution for this my animation dreams might be kill.

I personally feel like a lot of the magic is lost and don't really get the point aside from $$$. Especially with all the stuff Disney is releasing now, I feel like they nailed all of those stories perfectly the first time. Same goes for the Ghost in The Shell thing that's getting made.

It's all money, and a lot of people, especially in the west, aren't as dedicated to do a full length animated movie anymore. Our work ethic has declined because we can get away with less. Also, the west has always tied animation with children shit. If you tell an average person you're doing comics or animation, they'll instantly think you make kid's cartoons.
Western animation will be great again, one day.

just trying to learn some cool angles and shots with no context behind them.

it's fun learning from movies and shows you like. i find horror to have the most interesting/weird shots.
>>
>>2754441

Opinion time:

Playing around with cool angles is fine, for sure, but something a lot of animators do when starting out is try out all these super difficult cool prespectives and shots with dynamic cameras and crazy three point perspectives.

They look cool, but realistically speaking you shouldn't design scenes that will be such a great burden for your animators (or for yourself).

It's just not very effective and has a great risk of looking like shit if the animator doesn't have the necessary skills to execute it properly.

That first cut is quite challenging from animation point of view.

>>2754466

Richard Williams has the habit of not caring about the individuality of poses and cares way too much about smooth motion which does make his stuff look very floaty (but also smooth) because the poses mean close to nothing.

I can't believe so much people regard him as a master of classic animation principals. His work is closer to Russian Soviet era animation than classic American stuff.

I must say that a lot of the work you put into this is a waste of time. Animation is all about transformation. Change. Most of the drawings here are literally the same pose and expression drawn over and over again with tiny alterations.

You could do this whole thing with four drawings. You don't need all those frames between the first pose and the blink to get the same effect. All those useless frames are just luxury, those are the frames that you do when you're done with everything else.

So instead of doing all this and ending the acting abruptly, you should have worked smart and got a lot more done.

Smoothness=/=quality.

Please learn to draw before breaking your teeth on animation. You can't expect to juggle time and space if you can't juggle space alone.
Even Animator's survival kit tells you that learning to draw (Durer's work recommended) and life drawing is one of the most crucial steps in getting sorta good at animation.

Though I get where you're coming from in that a lot of the people you are responding to need to work on their fundamentals, I think it's more importantthat one should be working from observation and analysis, whether they are making moving or static drawings. You can develop your animation skill independently from your drawing skill, but ideally it should be interdependent.

What a lot of people do is take excerpts or scenes from books and try and board based on that.

You can also try boarding something without dialogue. Those can honestly make an impression especially since what a lot of people look for in storyboard portfolios is clarity. If you can show off that you can tell a story clearly, even without dialogue, you're good to go.

Well your rubberhose is pretty well done. And your comedic pacing is on point, reminds of homestar runner a bit. You're on track if you're aiming for the cartoon comedy shtick, just keep getting more elaborate till you can work up to a fully animated scene.

legs are fine but your clean up line for the head is too different from the rough, it's smaller and too smooth. just redo it and make the clean up match the volume of the rough's head, just a tad bit smoother from one frame to another.

The last cracked version on windows was 10.3. Last cracked on osX was 12.

The freeze trial works on version 12.0.0 for sure, no idea if it works with anything higher (even though there are some guides for 14 i also hear it mightve been fixed).

Alternatively you can use your student id and get harmony premium for 20 a month via studnet id on their site.

>>2760406
need more frames imo, frontal animation is always a tough one.

If it was me. Would have a closer shot of the torso and head then I would animate that part again. Unless you're trying to have the character walk forward, stare , reacting to being exposed.

Alright, so I'm trying out 14 since it seems to be working, but now my tablet's pen movement isn't be recognized.

I have Lazy Nezumi and it can hook into the window, but whether I've hooked Lazy Nezumi or not, wiggling my pen doesn't wiggle the mouse unless I'm outside the program.

Anyone have any ideas?

How is Toonboom for full frame-by-frame animation, especially with bitmaps? I'm using TVPaint because it's the only decent animation program with raster drawing I'd seen, but the interface is ass and now I know you can use rasters in Toonboom I'm wondering if it's worth the switch.

hey, CG animator here. you need to tighten up the spacing a lot and add some more interest and contrast especially in the rotations. watch out for the swimmy drift you're getting, like near the end. watch those elbows too. good start though.

>>2759547
really cool except mechanically, the recovery is too quick. he definitely needs more time down on his hips when he lands, and he jerks from right to left really suddenly after his first footstep when landing - like he rebounds back when the force should keep him moving. his ending pose is pretty twinned with the arms as well. it's also like they're locked in a plane flat to camera, when if he comes forward they should really have some swing to-and-from camera.
>>
I know this is probably an awful question but which program do use for animation purposes? can you suggest me some that's relatively easy for beginners?

These few frames I find really awkward, I imagine you tried the sequence without it? The quick double back rather than it coming in as profile seem unneeded and ruin the really nice flow you have going.

Fantastic short all the same though. You might appreciate an ongoing anime called Fune wo Amu for its reserved character animation.

I’m mostly just playing to my strengths and trying to widen my scope bit by bit along the way. I’ve been lurking these threads for several times longer than I’ve been animating though and it seems like people are more interested in fancy software or arguing about east v west than actually just animating. I get a lot of shit for doing flashy gifs without doing proper animation exercises first, but by doing things I find appealing I can actually stay interested enough to put in the hours. Walk cycles may be the most important thing, but they’re just not that fun, being an animation snob won't get you anywhere if you can't stay motivated.

>>2760384
Yeah, I haven’t seen it in a while though, I was going to actually make it lupin but I can’t draw faces at all so keeping on model through all of that would’ve been impossible.

>>2760602
The right to left thing is just me failing to convey the camera movement I originally planned. I also wanted to have a couple more frames of him running I’d been at it all day and just wanted to be done.

2760858
Originally there was no whooshing/blurring off screen it was just going to smoothly track around, but there was no sense of speed so I added that in and then didn’t think to remove those unnecessary frames, may have just subconsciously kept them because they looked nice on their own.
>>
>>2761457

I should follow your route. I lose motivation whenever i do exercises
>>
>>2761457
>Walk cycles may be the most important thing
So This.

Btw Your animation style reminds me of okiura a little bit or leans toward that direction, kind of floaty with some of the movement.

the large movements side to side take focus away from the boobies which I'm guessing you want to be the focus. less side to side, more up and down would be good on the body as a whole (head too). also watch the spacing on the ponytail and hands so they don't teleport as much and you should be good.
>>
>>2762001
different anon, but you think if the body moved in a figure eight and has better tim8ng and spacing, youd think itd add to the boobage?
>>
>>2762005
>body moving in a figure eight
no, as that would make the viewer's ability to keep an eye on the boobies even worse than just side to side as it is now.

I think when boobs are that big the strength to move their weight comes from the lower back, so the body's movement should be mostly up and down as in a usual walk or run and also a bit of forward towards the camera on the way to the up position and a bit away from the camera on the way to the down position. does that make sense? idk, just my thoughts on how I'd tackle it. so then the boobs are dragged as usual, down as the body goes up and up as the body goes down.
>>
>>2760789
It was good but the animation was pretty simple so not much to crit there. These type of gag animations that are more focused on the writing/humor than making nice looking animation would probably get better feedback on /tv/ or /lit/ or something

>keep an eye on the boobies even worse
tru tru, but wouldnt the simple up and down bob make the animation feel static? The figure 8 doesnt need to be extreme, just subtle enough to where it complements the boobies.

@3:16 in the video the anon posted, rocky bobs up and down, but theres a sway every time he bobs. I think a figure 8 that has a bit of an arch would be a way to emulate rocky's run. But youre probably right, the figure 8 might take away from the boobies

we shouldnt take away from the boobies
