Hi there 4chan. I need some advice. I always thought I wanted to draw sexy pinups featuring my oc's or other peoples, and make a living off the porn art industry. But after thinking things over I realise I'm no longer comfortable with that world. I think I'd rather just try to get work as a concept artist or do illustrations for people. Maybe game art for card games or video games as well. I'm thinking of taking a course to improve my art. But after i'm finished studying, what are good ways to get work in these areas?

The easiest way is through connections. If you know people already working in the industry they can recommend you to places, they can tell you of job openings, they can give you the email address of art directors etc.

Otherwise be visible online and ideally interact with the art community too on sites like facebook and artstation. The more visible you are the more likely you are to get work.

Build lists of companies you want to work for and do work that you think fits their style, then send them emails. Keep your eye open for postings about needing artists.

Pro-tip: Unless you are incredibly dedicated and incredibly skilled, you will fail. Just "taking a course to improve your art" won't be enough. It's an extremely competitive market right now and the minimum bar for skill level is constantly rising. Many of the smaller companies that are for artists who are less skilled and experienced don't pay enough to support yourself on.

Yeah I know its a very competitive buissness to get into. I'm hoping after taking this course i can draw well enough to at least make a little money on the side of my regular job. My teachers in the past have told me its best to do the art things as a side job, and artists at conventions i've talked to have told me the same thing.

I do know some people in the art buissness, i'll talk to them once I've finished the course.

What's the course? What does your art look like now?
>>
>>2733091

Its an illustrative design course, I don't really have much to show. But I was told by artists at conventions if I want to make money, i really need to take a course or study something similar.

They scammed you/lied to you. You just need to be skilled and have connections, art school is really the least important thing and most of the time it's a huge waste of time and/or money.

>art school is really the least important thing and most of the time it's a huge waste of time and/or money
I agree that it often can be a waste of money and time. It also can be a great way to gain skills and build connections. Don't over generalize all art schools and all students' experiences.

>I'm no longer comfortable with that world
are you the guy complaining you can't make money on commissions? there's so much money in porn i have no idea why you want the stressful, competitive job of a concept artist.
>>
>>2733190
Because it's the cool thing to do now. Everyone likes games, so now they can combine games and art.

You'd think an artist could do a better "hire me" sign.

Anyway the best way is to craft your portfolio close to what a studio's output is, try to outdo their current talent, hope to fuck that one of their inhouse artists is dead and beg for a job.

Why the fuck would you want to be a concept artist? There's no turnover, massive downtime between gigs and the same few studios get all the work anyway, 99/100 times you'll either not get a job or get one at some shitty d-rate mobile studio with no chance for career advancement since there's no fucking turnover.

While I agree with you, what do you suggest artists to do except concept art? Game illustration is even more oversaturated and that is where most people's interest ends. Medical/historical/architectural illustration come to my mind but that is not everyone's thing.

This might be someone else your thinking off, I know there is money to be made in porn. But I want to see what other options there are besides doing nsfw stuff. I want to be able to share stuff with things like family and friends. Porn you always have to keep hidden away. Plus sites like deviantart and furaffinity kind of turned me off the whole porn commission thing.
