Careful of pushing facial value shifts too much (minor plane scape stuff) - remember that each value shift indicates a change of form, so you're in danger of rendering form that isn't there.

On the same note, be wary of not pushing it enough, since then you're failing to indicate form.

Basically you've given yourself a really lumpy, flat head and wasted time rendering details instead of concentrating on the major values first.

The major values in most pictures are the planes facing the light sources and the shadows cast by those planes.

For example, in this statue head, the major values are the cast shadows on and under the head, under the jaw line, the eye sockets, and the bright area facing the light source.

It's not dissimilar from working with line. You start with major shapes and work down.

To make it less "lumpy" you'd just make the value shifts.

As for colour, I've found that good management of value allows you to sell most combinations. Right now I'd just say to continue to experiment.

You'd make the value shifts subtler. Try working in small shifts for that sorta facial detail, say 5-10%.

While not really correct or accurate, good yardstick until you get around to value studies.

Shit advice, You don't need 5 but you should spend a few hours on it. Sit in front of a mirror and carefully measure and check your proportions constantly. I used to do quick only quick studies and I never learned anything or got better until I started taking my time
