Looks like a digital painting, so I'm not sure why the drawing is so simplified. I am an oil painter with a traditional background and can confirm that my canvas drawings for paintings are usually not very detailed because I will be covering over them. I use them to make sure the objects are well composed before I add any layers.

Gathering different references for elements to put in the painting. Doing some initial sketches for design variations, then composition sketches, and then the final piece itself.
