I got accepted into a gallery and for the first show I have 4 paintings in it, one in the window display. I'll get to display new work there every month. Yay.

Lol Brian they are hanging your paintings crooked with a piece of string.

Congrats I guess. My advice is to stay away from the gallery though because if you are there and start talking then people will run away.
>>
what's the price tag on them?
>>
>>2730743
they range from 600-800. i don't have any paintings i'd charge over 1000 for, and nothing i'd charge less than 500 for. i'll see how those prices work out and adjust accordingly. still pretty new to pricing.
>>
>>2730735
Tuck the bottom of those wires behind he paintings
>>2730742
It's common to use wires to hang work in galleries that don't want nail holes covering their walls. They are crooked AF tho.
>>
>>2730769
yeah they were still hanging them when i got there. im sure they'll make it look proper by the opening.
>>
>>2730737
small note the lady running the gallery said i need to name it so they know it was a study of a van gogh painting and i was like "ackchooaly this is an original"
>>
>>2730790
>they told me it was derivative
>>
>>2730734
Congrats!

Good. It's right next to the light switch, in case people want to turn off the lights so they don't have to look at your "art":

You madman. I'd literally prefer nosebro and illustrat put together to Brian.

Congrats brian! I still hate you tho.

Protip: nobody wants to buy someone else's self portrait. Put up more landscapes/grill paintings

>Did I make it?

Yeah, for me it would be making it, especially if they would hang me regularly in a gallery every month.

I'm an amateur though and I wouldn't make painting my main job.

I've literally been in plenty of local exhibitions during high school. Being in a gallery is no easy task, i get it. But now you should be developing even more work and shooting for bigger name galleries. Talk to the person running the gallery too. You should be asking yourself the question: "Do I feel comfortable having my work in his gallery? Does he support my vision and my goals?" It's all aboit reputation, and if you aren't there 24/7 you're going to want someone who you trust will make crucial connections for you. If you really want to be a gallery artist, then you gotta dive headfirst and fast too. Start local, then hit a major city. Then hit as many major cities as you can in your state.
Then at that point you could start traveling out of state to where all of the big names are. From there, it gets super organic and adaptable. By this point you should have a large enough following that you can do pretty much whatever you want with a fair amount of security. Only then would you have "made it"

At least in my books as a gallery artist.
>>
Wow congratulations! You made it!
>>
>>2730734
explain the process of getting in and contribute something for once
>>
Anybody can get it, the hard part is keeping it.
>>

submitted five paintings, was judged by a jury of artists who are already part of the gallery, if they reach a majority vote on whether to let me in I'm accepted. $280 admission fee to be a full time artist there and as an artist i pay no commission to the gallery for paintings sold I get 100% of the sales. New shows every month and I'm allowed to put 2 paintings in each, up to 4 depending on how many other people submit things. Luckily the other members seem like maybe they have income from some other source so they don't feel the need to submit every month. Possibly I could have 4-5 paintings in every show every month so long as I keep making new paintings at a fairly brisk pace.
>>
>>2731336
Paying up front to get into a gallery? I've never heard of this before, is this common?

Sounds like they don't sell paintings and are just scamming you. Your art will hang there for a month then get taken down for the next schmuck to pay their fee to put up their art.
>>
>>2731340
it's common practice for low to mid tier galleries
>>
>>2731340
i dont think thats gonna happen. im a member for a year, so i get to be in 12 shows. assuming i sell at least one painting i've recouped the initial cost. and seeing the way they seem to be pushing my artwork i'd expect SOMETHING to sell. I'm in the front of the gallery in downtown of where I live I'd hope i get something sold this month. Also if something sells I get to put something new in to replace it so it's not strictly 4 pieces a month.
>>
Well done! Keep going! Don't let the discouragers and haters put you off your game!

i don't hate biggers. my best friend is a bigger.
>>
>>2731336
Ick. It's a co-op? Do you have to sit, too? This is what I've learned about paying dues:

Fees
Sitting
Commissions

Pick one. Only one. If there are two, bail. If there are three, run away. Me, I don't fuck with anything but galleries working on sales commissions. I've only made money when the gallerist has an incentive to sell. Every other structure turned out to be a wash or a loss, all things considered (with a big ball of dipshit drama). You're going to find a lot of those pay to play places are combinations of pyramid schemes and vanity space for old ladies with rich husbands. But, they do give you the opportunity to tune your work towards marketability. Eh. Well, good luck.
