I've followed a few mobile workstation threads but they allseem to agree that the current options aren't worth the price yet.

So I want to buy a regular sturdy lightweight laptop to use with my good ol' wacom intuos 4.

Which one would you recommend?

I use it for animation and illustration and I heard 256 storage, 8gb ram and i7 processor are important

Unless you usually paint on a 10000+ resolution canvas with huge ass texture brushes, those specs are way higher than what you need for digital painting. An i5 and 4-6 gb ram are usually more than enough. Also If you have an older version of Photoshop, it won't work on Win10, just be aware of that.

For graphic software you need at more RAM to have enough memory for the history and layers before it begins using the disk as swap space.

For animation you probably want the i7.

also, OP wants to do illustration. Vector art is notorious for being CPU/GPU hungry.

Then go for a good display and other stuff you care about and upgrade/replace RAM and SSD.

Workstations begin around 1400 and you can add a 1000 more for them being actually useful.

Do you actually need the mobility of a laptop? You'll get a lot more bang for your buck building a desktop.
>>
>>2729858
What does that even mean?

I already have a desktop, so mobility was the main reason

Is Wacom Intuos 4 the ideal purchase for someone looking to join the drawing tablet world? I just looked it up on Amazon. $25 new??!

I thought the cheapest tablets minimum were going to cost me like $60.

doubt it

For what reason?

Used thinkpad is cheapest

I got a T520 on ebay, swapped in the highest end mobile Sandy Bridge i7, 16gb of ram, 250gb SSD + 1tb HDD, and a 1080p IPS panel. Other than the SSD which I already had, it was probably $350 total.

I mostly use it for programming but on the occasions I have used it for art, it runs krita with a 8k resolution canvas just fine.

Forgot to add, check /tpg/ on /g/, there's a used buyers guide and mod advice there.

What if you forget my budget fir a moment and go for the absolute best for animation and illustration software which would a longterm purchase. What would you recommend?

Photoshop is a RAM consuming monster. If you're working at high resolutions with lots of layers and elements 16GB is the minimum you'll want. 8 gigs will fill up fast.

Even CS2 works fine on windows 10, I don't know what are you talking about.

>mfw it's a price of trash both literally and figuratively
>mfw it still has better ports, less spyware, and better compatibility with software than the new 5000 cintiq

I've got a 2.1 GHz Toaster that doesn't lag with Photoshop unless you have like 6+ layers or a 10000x10000 canvas or so. I tend to work on 1 or 2 layers and sub 4000 squared so that's a non-issue. Toonboom works about as well.

Cost me about $120. Bit jank, but portable. Screen has glare issues, fucking touchscreens.

Just about anything will do, is the point here. Unless 3D is involved anyway.

Try and get a good 500gb HDD though, you'll be surprised how fast it fills.
