Never seen this one before. Where'd you get it? Are you sure it is him and not one of his clones? Parts looks very much like him to the point I wouldn't question it normally, but parts are not really in line with how he typically paints, especially some stuff like the motion blur on the wings. He'll be remembered as one of the better early digital painters. It's the same as many of the guys who did illustration in the past century, they are remembered by people who like that stuff but nobody in the public knows them and that is okay. it's stupid to care only about legacy. He probably did mean that. I don't know why the other anon is saying that the core shadows are pumped up like Watts does when I don't see this in his work. Mostly Ruan actualyl paints more of an ambient light, but when he does put direct light he keep the shadows fairly fat with very little coreshadow, or he overexposes the light to play with the forms and values in the shadows, but even then he doesn't put strong core shadows. I only see him playing with core shadow stuff in some of his older studies.

Yeah I didn't read the post until after I made it. I think that it's important to note that he wrote it in 2013, and Ruan has changed his process a lot since then. He paints a lot more opaquely now, doesn't spend as long on his images (at least to my knowledge he's not still spending months or years on paintings), he uses values and edges a bit differently now too. That's why I mentioned in my post that it's only in his old work that I notice that.

You can just ignore all the stuff people say though and analyze it yourself, you will probably get things out of it that are more relevant to you.

HGJ has been around for a long time and he was arguably better than Ruanjia back in 2007-2009. You could actually make the case that Ruanjia was the HGJ clone or at the very least was heavily inspired by his work, before he became the powerhouse that he is today and left all his contemporaries in the dust.

I don't really see how he's RJ's clone there (and at the time RJ wasn't doing anything as impressive), it was just a generic asian mmo style paintings and he evolved from that in his own way. You can check RJ's site to compare their progress, it got dates as well. They both became very good about at the same. I like RJ a much more though.

Can someone tell me why they love RJ so much? Not jelly here but I don't know what so incredibly godlike about his artworks. It's visually appealing and nicely rendered but it just doesn't strike me as a favourote style. Anyone care to share?

He's basically just doing some very high level stuff in ways that other artists aren't. He does it in a very subtle but very masterful way and it's very controlled. So like the way he uses edges for instance, or the way he controls his saturation and colour, or the way he uses values. It's a bit hard to describe maybe to someone without much experience, but his style and technique and choices are done in ways that impress other artists a lot because as I said, it is very very skillful.

I think he's also great because he doesn't rest on his laurels or style, so if you look at his art through time you see he is constantly experimenting and changing his approach and growing, but those built in subtleties and control in his work is always there.

I am not a fan of the anime proportions and style, but there is such a great degree care and love that goes into his pieces which strikes a deep chord. Most artists can appreciate when it's obvious a lot of labor went into a piece, even if it isn't in their taste.

The main thing for me is the values and hues - it's a transcendent experience to be lead from focal points into high-key shadows and subtle contrasts. The dark, mellow greens, greys and blues of recent pieces communicate a natural, organic and dreamlike feel that I sorely miss in art today.

His unique way of rendering is more reminiscent of classical realism than any prevalent modern concept art or illustration. One look at communities like art station reminds me why I enjoy Juan so much; it's all safe, samey, unimaginative designs and harsh palettes. Juan's work is filled with "anti-industry" elements like chiaroscuro, obscured details, low keys.

Additionally, he doesn't appear to photobash. I can't stress what a plus that is for an old school artist like myself.

As I said, there's a pretty high chance Ruanjia used a photo of some girl as reference and that guy did a watercolor study of that same photo. Ruanjia's version has the proportions idealistically stylized, almost reminiscent of some old master portraits. It's very unlikely a mediocre artist who relies on tracing / stealing other people's art could use that painting as their only reference and somehow end up with a face that looks far more realistic and natural as far as proprtions go.

Are you?
