It seems like you aren't really capturing the structure especially of the fingers very well. Each section of the finger is rounded but has distinct planes too, and the way you handle the joint between them is very important. I would try to observe more closely, or perhaps study some other resource on hands by someone like Bridgman or Hogarth where you are working less with ton and more with form.
>>2727293
Not bad for quick colour studies. You've lost the ease of the originals though, there is an awkwardness in how you paint. But it will come with time. Good job over all on these.
>>2727294
Is the guy on the left blind? His eye looks odd otherwise. I think he's not handled too bad but maybe try to get more descriptive shapes. The way you did the fur on his hood is really good, but then the whole head looks sort of mushy and melting, the pipe is lazy, the metal areas don't feel like metal.
The melting goo warriors don't feel too designed. I would try to put a bit more thought into their shapes and weapons and appearance.
Out of curiosity, what school do you go to? I'm guessing it's some French animation school?

i dunno, guise, what do you think? can someone recommend a bunch of tutorials on making armor look less lame and desert less like dessert? what am i even doing here
>>2727716
Figure out your light sources for starters. You painted two suns behind him but they're not lighting him, he seems to be lit sort of ambiently at the moment.
Metal reflects its surroundings, think of it like a tinted mirror.
Get some reference, it shouldn't be difficult to find star wars reference or that of people in dark clothing in the desert.
Also his feet are not sitting on the ground plane very well at the moment.
>>2727716
I think you're lazy. A lot of great artists spend time exploring there limits with details, which is what your image lacks. Your composition and lighting is there. You are not. You need to develop a style that works around composition and lighting. Might take a you a decade. good luck

I have no idea what the heck i'm doing with the shine on the bauble?
Like how do I make it look metallic with just flat colouring?
>>2727718
yeah, the second sun was kind of a recent decision because he wanted it to be on tatooine
hence the dewgong thingy behind him
I was trying to tilt and shift the figure in photoshop because it seemed disproportionate at the time so i think that might be why the feet are wonked.
most of my art experience has been in lineart so this is actually one of the very rare times that i've ventured out into digital painting. i'm sorry, i'm not very experienced, so this probably looks like bland garbage to everyone else itt.

-why is she smiling? I mean.. This looks like it hurts...
but I like the piece.
Does she look retarded?
>>2728720
Not entirely, but a little bit. The open mouth I think gives her a drooley, mouth-breathy vibe. Also, damn dude, you should probably work on the whole painting more instead of fully rendering just the face. You might end up having to scrap a lot of work if you don't figure everything out evenly, on top of making you dread working on the less interesting parts.
Can I get a red-line?
>>2728754
I will do a redline in the morning.
>>2728093
Go back to your containment thread.
Looks good tho.
Why is the draw thread so stagnate right now?
How do I draw like good anime
Just look at this, no book I found teaches you how to draw this appealing
>>2728952
If youre observant, you can look at and understand what makes this appealing. Take it one section at a time.
-use of color
-composition
-correct use of size variance
-where the values are laid down
-and of course and understanding of anatomy
-etc.
Just ask yourself what makes it appealing and then work on those things
>>2728952
It's because you're looking at a drawing planned with illustrative/graphic design-y considerations.
If you look at, say, fashion ads from the 60's, they have a similar illustrative approach.
Basically, you want to remove yourself from realism by pushing (or removing) contrast, lines, quantity/saturation of colors. Do that with a good sense of notan.
I'd be interested if any of that was formalized in some books/methods, but I frankly doubt it.
If there's any body knowledgeable about the subject, please give some ref/link whatever that may help.
>>2728952
Anything successfully stylized like this comes from a deep understanding of whats being drawn. To me, the image shows great experience and preplanning. I doubt its something you can jump straight to doing without putting in the foundation work
Any good books on anatomy training?
>>2728754
Not the other anon, but here ya go.
The pose was kinda up to interpretation because I really couldn't tell what he's doing. Could be that he is feeling his unborn child and smiling at the thought of it, I don't know. Anyways. Mostly fixed some proportions and perspective.
It's not perfect, but nothing is.
Working on this. Got these great flowers at a florist. Hopefully it doesn't take me more than two layers to get the cloth and drapery right.
>>2729045
The table looks out of perspective and the design and shapes of it are not very clear. Otherwise this one is looking alright, better than your other paintings I think. I feel it's more successful because you are doing less "muh style" bullshit than usual.
>>2729047
i think what might be making the table look confusing is that the leg of the table is three separate legs, with the leftmost one showing, and the other three hidden by the cloth. so it looks like it's extending out too far on one side. i could probably also raise the cloth up a bit on the right side, but i can't change anything right now it's too wet.
how do I into lovecraftian horror and eldritch abominations?
>>2729047

Ambition...Giving all I have in each piece is one of the very few things under my control. Even if I don't ever "make it" art has already become an end on itself for me

>>2729920
thats not a crit. i don't even know what part of the painting you are referring to paintings can't have any lines in them or it's style? lines are bad? style is bad? what are you getting at? the lines aren't cohesive with the size of the other brushstrokes? everything should be smoothed out? you like getting fucked in the ass by other men? please clarify
>>2729928
And there's nothing even arbitrary about these lines. They clearly serve a purpose that the artist thought about.

Still can't figure out the ears though..
>>2729955
i mean... the answer might not be as clean design-wise as you'd hoped. it might have to have it's ears pressed against it's head because of the headband. as for "where" the ears go just look at a photo. i can't give you the coordinates there's plenty of pictures of those types of dog on the internet.

Well all of those greyish blotches are the same sizes when they should be getting smaller as they recede away and larger as they come closer. Something related to that?
experiment
is this lame? need to know if it has any shock value.
>>2730216
Not really any shock value. The creature is the centre of attention, it's not surprising it's there and the creature is pretty basic.
>>2730199
Modular design is a powerful tool, but it doesn't work well for something like this where you are combining all these things in different perspectives. It's better to do it for flat views of things.
>>2730226
yeah
>>2730126

>>2728389
Here's another I'm noodling around with. I'm finding out when it comes to these painterly fandom pieces, I can just thrown in an ill conceived light source and as long as it looks cool, it doesn't need to be realistic at all.
Oh, and cover up a bunch of shit with atmosphere.
for tg
>>2730216
is that a face at the top? If that were clearly conveyed (like the creature could actually pose as a human in some regard), and fairly subtle so you don't see it right away, and everything else was fairly realistic- that would be pretty shocking.

>>2731487
Honestly hadnt heard of him until i just looked him up. Ill take it as a compliment. But the rendering is going to be in a much different style. More beksinksi-esque. At least thats my aim.
>>2731478
I posted the blue sketch for it about 2 months ago, but that's probably not what you're thinking of. Other than that this is the first time I've drawn something that looks like this. The words and figures all relate to a very specific incident so it's not possible for you to have seen something identical (ie, words on green chick's forhead are scanned from a letter she sent). I usually just draw lizards and fish, etc, with thin lines... So not possible x2. You're mistaking my work for someone else's. But maybe that's a compliment, iunno.

>>2731582
The left side of the chest seems ?off? but apart from the pretty good. Not a fan of the shading on the left leg mind.
>>2731626
Sexy brushwork! But I think you should ad a tiny tad of atmosphere perspective to the grass the furthest back, now it looks a bit too evenly saturated.
>>2731626
Looks pretty cool. I did a quick paintover just because a few things bothered me.
-tried to get more depth with the hills--smaller hill shapes farther, bigger ones close. I also added some grass in the foreground but I get that you may have intentionally avoided that for stylistic reasons.
-clouds needed some work I think. Either go all out with keeping them stylized with hard edges, or if you want soft edges keep things reasonable. Having lost edges in there and then some areas with a crisp lasso line looks awful as it just looks too extreme. The top right cloud is a bit out of perspective with too much of the bottom plane showing.
-atmospheric perspective is handled incorrectly. Distant clouds take on a warmer hue when very far. Rayleigh Scattering takes all the blue out of the light that bounces off them so they are shifted warmer when we see them (same reason the sun is yellow, and why it is red as it gets lower in the horizon). The mountain too has the atmospheric perspective incorrect. You just glazed the cyan sky colour over it, when the way the colours would shift is a bit different. Look at photos of mountains in the distance and you will see the colour and value change is not as simple as glazing the sky colour, think for example how very distant mountains take on a purple hue. It usually begins to affect the shadow areas first too, and the areas in light are less affected. You mountain isn't distant enough anyways I don't think for these effects to be very strong, and the side of the mountain should be in direct sunlight according to the rest of your image so would have a warmer colour to it. The clouds also should be casting a shadow upon the rockface.
>>2731739
You destroyed a lot of the appeal of the original desu.
>>2731744
This
>>2731744
mm I think the added shadows on the grass are kinda nice, but the texturing in the foreground should either be simplified more or not included at all. the clouds were definitely good as they were before. maybe some more shape variation on the clouds above the building would be good.

>>2726928

any advice?
Hiya! I have a question for people who are really good at drawing.
How big a line would you draw with your shoulder on overhand pencil holding on? How big would you draw your using wrist using the writing pencil on? I was recently told to start drawing with shoulder and overhand holding technique, but I always want to just use my wrist with my writing hold.
So if you could, on my image I made, show me how big on an A4 sheet of paper you'd drawing your smallest overhand shoulder line, and your biggest wrist line, it would help me to see how where about I should be doing things.
>>2731494

so i should be the bear fag on the right with the hipster haircut? that tattoo's pretty cute you think he models full time?
also i can grow a pretty big beard but it gets pretty grimy. that guy trims. trimming is for homosexuals.
>>2733126
neither of these fags even has black hair. go back to le reddit with your meme hair colors. when you feel like joining the rest of the world come back and talk.
>>2733149
>Its a tunnel right?
yes
thanks for your feedback
>>2733158
You do look like a stereotypical beta, though. Not even trying to insult you. It's just the receding hairline, beard, skinny frame and glasses in that last picture. It's like a uniform.
>>2733008
At least this is well drawn. Wish I had the patience for pencil drawings, but I've gotten too used to "undo".
>>2733172
>It's like a uniform.
well when you can draw like an alpha nothing wrong with dressing, talking, and acting like a zeta.
>>2733158
you're an indian this whole time?
>>2732084
Try for reincarnation
>>2727292
LOVE this. What materials are you using here?
>>2733008
This work of art reminds me of the salty aroma my balls produce if I do not shower consecutively.
>>2733158
Got the feeling you could push the darks and lights a bit further. Noice however, love the background
>>2729860
What even is that?
>>2733227
LMFAO
>>2733227
holy shit. muh style
>>2733008
Hmm not as many meme lines this time. Looks like my posts are getting through your thick skull.
>>2733491
yep. your hard work is paying off. has nothing to do with me being better. i definitely always take every piece of advice i get on /ic/ especially the really specific ones like "muh style" and "meme lines"
>>2733158
Your sense of color is clearly evolving. Very nice work here, especially the textural contrast between the opaque whites and washed out background. I think that continuing in this direction would be very successful for you.
I still hate you tho.
>>2733526
Look at the filename, that self portrait is from over a year ago.
>>2733530
Welp its only downhill from here then.
>>2729564
>>2732341
appreciate the feedback!
I was wondering if I should ink it?
it's the first thing I've drawn/painted in well over a year. I was really depressed for a while and trying not to an hero. It's super sloppy.
>>2733792
This is the last thing I painted before I stopped. I think it was like May 2015.
>>2733795
nice. the dark cloud looks a little too close to the ground because of how dark it is. might be better if that cloud was removed altogether.
seascape im working on. either the sky is done, or not even close to finished. haven't decided yet.
>>2733844
The colors look muddy, and the brushstrokes are way too uniform in both size and application. Get rid of the little dudes with spears as they look awful and kill the scale.
>>2733844
stop using black.fuck.
>>2733848
>>2733864
so that was a whatever painting, i knew it wasn't gonna come out great because I did the colors from memory, and the drawing wasn't that infromative... but what i'm worried about is that I'm in a gallery right now that's not particularly high end, and I don't want to do paintings in the $3000-$4000 range effort-wise because I'm not sure they would sell... I could spend a long time on a single painting and make something valuable but I'm worried the gallery I'm at isn't the place for something like that.
>>2726928
Drew this yesterday.
Not that happy with the bent leg of the creature on the right.
>>2733884
>excuses for why it's shit
>>2733884
>in a gallery with this shite
if you cross your eyes and squint, it might look good. the thumbnail looks better than the actual piece.
start over. completely. you shouldn't be in a gallery
>>2733900
>you shouldn't be in a gallery
and im guessing you should?
>>2733954
>n-no you!
I don't think I'm good enough to be in a gallery, but at least I don't lead myself into delusions of grandeur.
>>2733959
Don't even bother arguing with Brian. He literally thinks he's the best draftsman on the board and he just wants people to suck his dick, and then gets a bad attitude when he gets a lukewarm reaction his his half-assed "muh style" paintings.
>>2733961
He is the best on this board
Who else?
>>2733961
The more I see his paintings, the more unappealing I find them.
Now everytime some random fucker says "it's nice" (if it's not just him samefagging) I want him to get the fuck back to his fucking DAhugbox.
>>2733844
cool
Hey fagolas what's that traditional painter that's really good and colorful, had pixel in his name or something on dA
>>2733898
pretty cool man. I think I might start sketchin on paper again. It's been a while. the whole digital thing can get pretty gross after a while.
>>2733967
personally they just look like the smell of dirty uncontrolled farts.
>>2733967
oh you mean my DA hug box where I never got past 13 watchers and rarely got any feedback? or my reddit hug box where I'm lucky to get past 10 likes anymore? I'm so delusional, all the internet attention is getting to me.
>>2733998
sorry for the ambiguity m8, the second him referred to "some random fucker"; you, I don't care where you go, as long as you disappear.
an oil painting im working on
>>2733975
Thanks.
Drawing on paper after drawing tons digitally, is quite refreshing imo.
>>2734058
Don't use up expensive oils to paint shit. Learn the fundamentals first. Learn perspective, form, colours, composition and design.
>>2734063
they werent expensive.
that feeling wen you know you're never going to catch up to the industries standards. never gonna make it.
>>2734058
it looks pretty good.
>>2734058
except you don't learn anything from copying
>>2734077
>that feeling wen you know you're never going to catch up to the industries standards. never gonna make it.
Eh, you can make it, you just need to make sure your images are as strong as they can be. Spend a lot longer on this, turn it into a nice portfolio piece. Ask yourself how can it be improved? getting more interesting shapes maybe? How do you do that? Get some reference on how Spanish Moss hangs, and how tree branches twist as they grow. Maybe do some thumbnails one how to get the shapes of the composition really working well. The worm itself--how can you make it cooler? Maybe get a more dynamic pose, have it doing something more than just sitting there. Or what about maybe making it really gross and wet and shiny and slimy. "B-but that's hard!" Google is your friend, spend 30 minutes finding good reference if you need to. It will save time in the long run and make your end result stronger. just logic your way through every step until you have crafted a professional image.
>>2734084
well i dont know about that. that statement isnt helping much either, though.
I drew a cross dresser
>>2733226
charcoal and white conte
Feel like I need to push the contrast further, what else should I look out for?
WIP
its so hard to find time to paint when you work 10 hours every day, how do you guys do it>? ???
this one ain't workin out so well
>>2734017
beauty!! i'd do a bit more research into guns and costume design, right now it's a lil generic despite the subject matter
>>2733973
neat concept!! looks a little too arctic for there to be raccoon tails though, right? i'm sure that the really dull values in intentional, but i'm not sure if it's working just yet. i think you could afford to go darker with the occlusion shadows.
>>2733795
this looks really nice!! very sharply rendered. composition feels a little claustrophobic, probably could stand to shrink some things to space them out a bit more. the other painting you posted was great too, so don't be afraid to offer critique to others who might need the insight of someone who paints as well as you do
>>2734362
all you need is a couple hours a day, pumpkin lips.
Whats a good way to start learning how to do environment thumbnails? All of my compositions are weak and I can't put a complex scene together at all.
>>2730026
If your life is shitty maybe you should consider getting a real job. Or killing yourself.
>>2733844
This is not good. Practically indecipherable. If you are going to do impressionism, dont try to reinvent it. Use a more pleasing color scheme and smarter strokes.
>>2734362
Practice edge control and value grouping by drawing.
If you understand these two things, you should be able to draw/paint with anything as long as you understand the limitations of the medium.
>>2734260
Done
>>2733844
>>2733884
It's not terrible, but I think you really need to try different brushstrokes. I have a similar problem though.
Have you sold much in galleries yet? And if so, what prices?
I just sold a couple for 260 bong, which seems ok considering they were small.
>>2734827
Life drawing from this morning btw, looks like he's levitating a bit, hmm.
>>2734216
Too much highlights also.
work in progress
there'll be an ocean with islands underneath the clouds later on
dump o couple of life drawings
>>2734976
