How do I acquire the drawing style of another artist I like? Pic related. If you read Gantz then you know this is by Hiroya Oku. He's really in the middle of drawing people inbetween anime and realism. I want that. How do I acquire the style of another artist?

Just copy his drawings. Master studies, they call it. You gotta copy a shitload of them, but hey thems the breaks.
He actually makes models (I think from clay but I'm not sure) of the characters and rotoscopes them, which is why they have that realistic look to them. I don't know how much he draws on it's own, but there's more to his style than just drawing well.

He uses something like maya to create a 3d render of a character that he draws over, hes actually a little bit of a hack, desu. He does the same for backgrounds except with photoshop. (A lot of mangaka do this)
He did actually create a technique in one of his earlier award winning pornographic mangas, it was nipple blur, essentially.
nobody on this board knows
Yeah he uses 3d modeling extensively in his work. Like the only thing he really draws are the faces.

He doesn't. That super complex giant woman made of smaller women had no 3d behind it, you could easily tell because the shapes of the sub bodies weren't consistent to have been copied from a model. If something so complex was made without the need of 3D he really have good anatomy skills. Same for most other monsters of the Osaka arc, they were far too diversified for that.

there's creatures on the giants planet that he 3d rendered and din't even draw over, man.

Reread what I said, I was answering the anon who said
> Like the only thing he really draws are the faces.
Oku has got lots obvious parts where he makes 3D models and doesn't even bother redrawing them (last arc), but I pointed at that he still have the drawing skills to do something complex and that necessitate good anatomy knowledge and inventivity without 3D. He was at its best in the Osaka arc.
I only read the early volumes, but I definitely got the feeling he traces over photos or something for the characters and just uses photos for most if not all of the backgrounds.
The white stroke around the figures against the background killed the art for me, made it look like cutouts.

Considering it's Japan and not a made up setting, it would only make sense that they look "traced" because they are legit real.
Would it be similar to the thread that I ask the same question but the art style is different? Picture is the example. I've been really interested in the Blizzard videos of the painted animations. I really wish to adopt that style or acquire a very similar style, it's perfect for what I wish to do.

Nigger, did you even read that post?
He was talking about the characters.
>>2726607
you learn what their techniques were
the Gantz artist literally used 3D models to create scenes and drew over them
do that

>Not reading the thread
>Parroting bullshit because one random guy said so
The Oku can't draw and traces over 3d models meme is perfect proof people never actually research whatever shit they wanna talk about.
Dude is an accomplished mangaka, he's obviously got the skills to draw whatever he needs, the 3d trace stuff is for the sake of saving time. Remember these guys have to shit dozens of pages of complex stuff each month, sometimes twice a month.
You'd be a fool to not use digital tools when justified in this day and age, but that doesn't mean you should skip the basics before you even get there.
He has come a long way...

That's fucking lame desu
the reality of the workflow disappointed me at first too, but then I realized that this is really a result of the high demand for media that essentially requires too much skill and has too much risk. And nobody complains, they enjoy gantz for what it gives. I think only a select few really are turned off by "legitimate-ness" when it comes to anything, because these are the types of people that wish to admire mastery over the story. Where does that put people like me who got into drawing because I looked up to wise and knowledgeable masters that dedicated their life to it? in a pretty awkward spot. I'm young so I don't know much about the world, and to me it seems like cooking is the only creative route where shortcuts are not appreciated at all.
People just don't care when it comes to visual media it seems. Preservatives and artificial stuff in food might give it flavor but will have adverse effects on your body, which is why people will always have such high and unwavering standards for food. those that consume junk food are seen as low lives. but nobody can tell the difference when it comes to art.
reasons why I'm pursuing a different career.
