I liked it better with the wings. The face is still *fucked* though. Not one of your better ones dude. I'd leave it alone amd work some more on that neato self portrait from last thread.

Posting this here cause the other thread is dead and no critique :(
>>
>>2723916
The environment and mood are both very effective, but the figure itself is a little too ambiguous imho. Also the high contrast on the cube takes the attention away from the figure, which i assume is your focal point.

not really a critique, but why is the apple casting a shadow on the sky?

I would suggest you don't copy and paste images into your paintings(background, basket) unless you can adjust the colors to fit the setting.
>>
>>2724139
Its not copied at all. Its a layering issue. I lost my file and had to rebuild the whole picture with a non rendered version and a jpeg.
>>

I extended the right leg in paint and I think it looks better.
>>
>>2724139
I like the background but how would i fix the colors on the basket to make it fit better?
>>
>>2724289
I think you should extend it even more, it is the closer leg and i can tell by the upper rim of the waist being exposed that our eyeline is about eye level so because it is closrr than the other leg, it will be lower.
>>
>>2724315
I'm not the anon who painted it, but I tried extending it further and it looked okay as well. I'm not very experienced so I won't pretend to know for sure what is correct
>>
>>2724289
fix the rim lighting. it's not working. i have no idea if you intend to make it more believable, but the rim lighting is more a an outline. and don't use white as a rim light, because realistically it would not have such light hues on the armor.

These are really nice! The one on the right has a lot of character to it, the facial proportions and the posture makes his personality come through really well. I would make the pistol's silhouette more distinct, right now it kind of blends in with his form and takes a little while to notice.

The one on the left seems less defined as a character, I can tell from the staff and the filename that it's a mage of sorts, and maybe from some kind of arid climate, but their personality and purpose isn't otherwise immediately clear. There's a lot of details but they're all sort of blurry, like the potions on his waist, the bands on his turban and his facial features in general. Decide what the character is going to be about and design something based on that, otherwise the design becomes really vague and uninteresting, despite all the details.

Both of you are using just one color and so the pieces look muddy. The anon that did the paint over should make differences in values in faces, especially female faces more subtle.

I recommend the anon that made the head go back to pencil and practice value comp studies to really hammer it into their head that they should map out their values in the under drawing. Learn to recognize values in black and white first and make your painting without color for now... color is secondary to values, keep this in mind.

5:46 onward will come in handy for both of you, good luck.

Is the balloon supposed to look wrong to make it eerie?
Because if not, you should make it look rounder and like it's actually filled with gas and would float. Now it looks either solid and on a stick or a water balloon an a string and the image is turned upside down.

Too much focus on trying to get stylize pencil strokes, and not enough focus on solid drawing. ever hear the term Chiarasouro? If you haven't, look it up and learn to study it and notice it. Really strong in works like Rubens'

Your study is good, not a real broad spread of different values, but as long as you learn something you are making good work. Anon is right that it is pretty black/white, but there are some midtones in there. Your interpretation of the edge on the highlight side is at least saying you are thinking about that kind of thing. Where tones change could use some work.
>>
>>2724784

The anatomy of the girl as top priority, the wings of the birds as second, and as third priority learn to paint leaves that tree look like painted for a toddler.
The far foot is bigger than the close one, the hand which the girl is trying to grab the fruit lacks of expression. And the finger which are holding the basket are too way larger than the ones in the other hand.
Take my advise, or not it´s up to you.

What helps for me is when I keep in mind that at least one pixel must be 0% white and at least one pixel must be 100% black and go from there. Typically only a very tiny part of the picture will be 0% white such as the glint in an eye, reflection off a button, or maybe in your picture the center of a porch light. Large amounts of a picture can be black or close to black.

The hair look bad when you draw in every strand like that all the same, and especially when it has that scribbly appearance. Try to treat the hair as a larger mass rather than individual strands:
http://gurneyjourney.blogspot.ca/2008/04/hair-string-mop.html

http://gurneyjourney.blogspot.ca/2008/04/hair-ribbon-secret.html

Otherwise on the face get some reference photos of an actual person to see what the structure of things are and how light works.
>>
>>2725022
>/beg/
Hair is uniform clumps, you lack knowledge of facial proportion (eyes are too wide) and proportion in general (why do the guy's shoulders stretch twice the width of his head to either side?), faces are kind of amorphous blobs with no skull underneath, the division between the collarbone and pecs should not be a clear contour, etc.

To be honest this kind of looks traced since it seems like you got the overall figures' proportions right, but your detailwork is weak in that the bricks are all wonky, the guy looks feminine/the girl looks manly thanks to messed up face and nose, his hand is a blob, you drew both sets of their eyes as dark shadows with no actual eyes/eyelashes, and the girl's face almost blends into the background.
check the guy's facial proportions, he looks like a girl. If he's supposed to be a girl you failed since it looks like a guy. clearly show where his fingers actually are on his stage-left hand, since right now it just looks like a blob with sharp tips. Clean up the his watch too, it doesn't have the level of polish the sweater has. the girl looks okay. Like the other anon said, straighten your background lines and fix the red pail. make it align in perspective with everything else. add some darker values on the guy's sweater, it looks really flat.

focusing on giving myself prompts and developing a character design porfolio.

The prompt is "molten viking", but I'd like to keep it high fantasy rather than grimdark. I'll work on some more diverse silhouettes and report back.
>>
>>2725960
I like the way you render value in the face and neck, but her wrist is messed up. There's no indication of a joint at all and the messy lines on the top of the hand ruin the elegance of the drawing. I'm also not sure if it's physically possible for her stage right shoulder to be in that position. If her shoulders are actually that tilted, you didn't reflect that when drawing her neck. The line for her boob is probably also too low since the distance from the bottom of the chin to the bottom of the chest should be exactly one head length, although it looks like your perspective is looking at her from below. You warped the head, too; the back of her head protrudes outwards a lot.
Basically your rendering skill is a lot better than your sighting.

>>2726004
those're good!! i like the idea of a forge being a part of the dude's head/helmet in the third one, could probably have a lot of fun with that. he could stick his sword into the hole in his head and reforge his weapon into a different shape or some shit.

the first one has a more obvious silhouette, though the horns don't do much to say molten viking, and it overall isn't anything particularly new. second one is also really neat, though it screams dark souls to me, so i dunno if you want that. these are definitely more high fantasy, but still darker like one of the souls games, although maybe i'm just thinking that because of the fire motif. are you gonna paint these or anything?

Boy are you getting some shit advice around here... Let me throw in some more.

1. Symbol drawing - you think you're over it but you're not. I guarantee you won't find a person with eyes outlined like this.
2. Drawing or painting? Decide. You're doing half of both and they clash instead of complimenting your picture.
3. Values. Had you done some thumbnails or value mapping before painting, you'd know that the composition is shit. Set up a focal point and make sure we can tell apart your fore/mid/background in their entirety.
>>
>>2725627
Thats some damn fine improvement, anon, keep it up. I recommend Ron Lemen's Gnomon DVDs if you want to learn how to draw heads a bit better. or you can go with Huston, too, actually.

Fuck yeah first proper snow of the winter (as in the snowflakes don't melt upon hitting the ground). These early snows before the slush are the comfiest time of year.

I looked outside just as the light was fading and the snow was coming down in giant wet snowflakes so wanted to get that feeling. Only had maybe 5 or so minutes to paint before things got dark though, so I just wanted the feeling and the thumbnail more than accuracy of drawing and shape.

you really don't know that the work is drawings of observed people by legendary artist KJG?

>legendary
>>
>>2726697
you can't deny that's how the majority see him, whether you agree or not.
>>
>>2726697
He's pretty close to being legendary actually. He's got the highest amount of respect from all the current top pros and he's drawing in a way that people literally thought was impossible until he came along. He also seems to be having a pretty big impact on up and coming artists and the way they draw, including some pretty established ones like Even Amundsen. I think the only thing holding him back is a lack of work that stands out as being historically important. People like Frazetta or Moebius created many iconic images and comics, but KJG hasn't done anything except thousands of independent sketches and some mediocre comics that only were published in Korea. Maybe all his sketchbook volumes will one day be seen as his contribution though, hard to predict.
>>
>>2726699

The other guy here but really, I never got the hype KJG gets on /ic/. He is pretty gimmicky, that's all.
>>
>>2726678
This is really nice. Like that sweet spot between a sketch and a more refines lineart
>>
>>2726703
>gimmicky
That contributes nothing. He's not popular just because he draws without construction. The quality of his art is real high.
>>
>>2726692
I thought he was just mimicking the style, which is why I called him Kim. I apologize for my ignorance.
>>
>>2726703
It's not just on /ic/ that he's hyped up. The way he draws is pretty much any artists' wet dream--no planning required, incredibly quick, able to draw almost any object from almost any angle with easy. He's also got a very appealing style on top of it all. Even if he drew normally he'd be quite popular.
>>
>>2726701
yeah I definitely see a lot of artists have been inspired to practice more with pens lately, and I believe it's partially due to his influence.
>>
>>2726692

Are the arms proportionate?
I have trouble keeping arms in proportion when they're outstretched and have really nothing to measure them against.
>>
>>2726789
forearms should be as long as the head is tall, so just give the arms a touch more length.
>>
>>2726522
>>2726522
So fucking good, I'm jealous. Would you happen to have some others?
>>

>>

thanks anon, i think ill get to symbol drawing, watched a video about it a month ago or so but i never, how to say
practised?
i dont know what kind of look im going for, i dont want to have the animeish effect of flat colours and shading, i want to paint and give dimension, i want to get to rendering, but i dont know what to do with the outlines so they just end up black and thick
like lineart, which i hate.
do you have any tips on how to get better with values? is there a value tutorial or something?

>>2726078
thanks, i noticed the breasts, the arm, the shoulders, but i was just too burned out and unmotivated to do anything about them, thats a problem i have as well
if i dont know where im going somewhere with a piece, ill get unmotivated, and it'll look like shit

I've been trying to draw realism and it's getting pretty frustrating so I let loose and tried to draw really fast and it felt so liberating. It's pretty flawed but I really like how this turned out.
>>
>>2727010
After I finish my block in stage which usually has way more hue variation and better values, when I start to blend I tend to mute my colors a lot because turning a form is difficult for me.

Anon you really need to practice perspective and proportions of humans more. I'd recommend picking up scott robertsons book.
