What's the best free drawing software?

Photoshop.
Crit/redline pls, specially composition, as I'm trying to get /fit/ in that regard before I go into polishing this. You are doing god's work in these threads, anons.

did a pen drawing of these flowers before they died. RIP flowers

The painting pales in comparison to the drawing, honestly. Your "handwriting" is completely different between the two mediums that I thought they were by two different artists.

well I'm not in a major that has us rendering/painting everyday, so I'm sure they cut me some slack. Also the grade is also reflects progress, design, presentation and ect..

super cool mi familia!
There's been a lot of slugs on the sidewalk near my house lately.
Anyone know how to get an oily texture effect on Photoshop? I'd like to have something I can overlay on my paintings so I can add more stuff. Thanks.
>>2720320
it's varied between which majors you apply for like our Computer animation program is pretty great but it's sister major game art and design kinda sucks
and our illustration major is mixed from what i here.
just apply to art center
>tfw you feel real improvement and actually like what youre working on after hours of doubt filled turd polishing
Th-thanks /ic/
Crit? I cant get the colors in the dress and hair to an acceptable hue.
>>2720335
Whoops. Resized.
>>2720338
Beautiful but the lit side of the face feels washed out atound the eye area. Maybe darken up the shadow of the upper eyelid and saturate the iris for more interest?
>>2720338
Is there a reason you never make the pupils black? In real life the pupil is a hole in the iris and it's where light enters the retina so it's pitch black as light is going in but not coming out. Making it lighter like that gives your figures a lifeless doll-like look.
Also be careful with the collar there, the way you painted the shapes and the shadows make the form look like it is going into where her chest and rib cage should be. The cloth should hang on top of the forms of her body, not drape down as if on a coat hanger.
>>2720336
Have you tried shading/lighting with different hues? push the shadows on the red hair to a more purple tone, or the highlights to a more yellow one. Same with the dress. I think you're heading in a good direction.
But I'm just another noob tho.
>>2720340
I was trying to give her a ethereal feeling bit I will try what you suggest, see if it fits better, thanks
>>2720342
Thanks that was very thorough, I had not noticed what you just remarked about the clothes and her collar (might be too late about the former though :() . I felt the pupils kind of worked here in a stylistic way but your explanation was another thing I had not considered so I will fix them too.
Pic related is a phone sketch, I will try to finish it by tomorrow
cant tell if ok or if polishing turd. help?
>>2720347
you gotta feel it anon
i drew this pornstar named bambi brooks. she's got a very pixar look to her. lot of character in her face
>>2720345
absolutely gorgeous sketch. no real advice as im not well versed, but i love it.
>>2720348
i have never understood what that meant.
thumb reads ok to me, didnt use guidelines, no overlay to check proportions, all on one layer. i tried to push it a bit, with the chin and the cheekbones being a little exaggerated but it feels off. maybe the eyes?
>>2720347
the eye shape is a little bit longer than in the reference
try to organically integrate the pattern of the jacket into your sketch rather than just using lines–they have a shadow, a highlight, etc
the hair doesnt quite look like hair but i can see where youre coming from using the reference
maybe crosshatch instead of just using the rhythm lines rom the reference?
>>2720335
maybe try to use a 50% opacity of the bg on the hair and then take a sample from that? im sorry my tablet broke a while ago so im real rusty at digital painting but that should get you closer to ~harmony~. do the same for the dress.
>>2720197
speaking of color harmony, try to add a little bit of the teal to the red or the red to the teal
>>2720351
The entire structure is off. Look at the angles in the jaw, the way you've stretched out her eye, the size of her chin etc. Just compare horizontal and vertical relationship between things and you should see how off everything is.
>>2720184
where her knees at!?!?! also, the torso looks a little disproportionate to the head–make the torso smaller or the head bigger
>>2720181
i've had a ton of fun drawing hillary and trump these past few weeks so it's really cool to see your interpretation! i love the...blind contour??? sorry im drunk and havent been in drawing class for a while~~ ANYWAY its a unique style, try to be a little more precise with it though.
good shit yall
>>2720348
i agree with the other poster, you have a good sense of form in the face until you hit the jaw and it seems slapped on–it should fade slightly more?? this is a good caricature but it doesn't look like it has volume. can i see your reference? im not familiar with the model.
>>2720352
rhythm lines? never heard that before. is there something on that in the sticky?

Quick self portrait , just getting back into it after a year of working a soul less job
>>2720361
you messed up the perspective fampai.
>>2720366
how so?
man my workflow is fucking retarded
>>2720367
look at the characters slant in comparison to the vertical of the back ground , her body needs to be straightened more to the right otherwise in real life she would fall forward, the feet are in a n ok placement draw a line up to make a square in perspective following her perspective .and you will see what i mean. she looks slanted forward or at least it looks that way for some reason. or maybe one of the legs is disproportionate.
>>2720389
in either case it looks strange for some reason.
>>2720367
she's still coming towards the camera even after she passes above the horizon line
it's very very off
>>2720389
You know the body can move right? She has a different set of vanishing points because she is turned and her shoulders aren't parallel to the ground.
That said, it does look weird. I think the scale is messed up. The horizon line will intersect objects of the same height at the same point regardless of where they are, so if she is standing next to the building then her nose is still at the horizon line, which would make her nearly as tall as the building.

Erm, Hi. I want you to give me advice. For some time I've drawn stuff as a hobby but now I want to get serious with it. Thing is - I completely unaware about method and purpose of doing studies. Obviously doing studies is necessary to develop understanding of its subject, but is there a proper way of approaching studies?
Let's take gestures for example - how detailed and accurate should it be? Should I focus on particular bodyparts for whatever reason? Should I use small size brush because textured and wide one is cheating?
Also I don't know how to properly warm up.
>>2720473
Ready the sticky fuckboiii
And with figure studies it really depends on what you want to study. Do you want to study anatomy? spend an our rendering a model's musculature. Want to learn gesture? Spend half an hour flicking through photos and give yourself 30 seconds to capture the gesture of the model.
Warming up is different for everyone IMO, i usually just jump right into painting.
I mean is there exist a regimen of some sorts that tells how exactly do study and warm ups? At least I wish to see more people tell about theirs routine. Sticky has vague directions and art material but maybe I missing something though.
>>2720516
I see you are filled with doubt, welcome to the club
>>2720516
If you really want a framework you can take a class I guess. But it's really about finding out what works for you.
>>2720355
Thanks m8, it was a mix of blind contour and memory drawing. Didn't want to cheat by pausing the TV.
Made some fixes as per suggestions.
I'm attempting some counter change between the values, want some feedback on that.
>>2720473
>Let's take gestures for example - how detailed and accurate should it be? Should I focus on particular bodyparts for whatever reason?
A study is meant to help you get better at something that gives you trouble and you need to improve. There's no perfect recipe or routine for studying. That's why it's so important to do work from imagination as well. It helps you figure out what your shortcomings are and what you need to work on the most. If you realize you are having especially big problems with certain body parts, then yes, you should do focused studies of said bodyparts. If your main problem is drawing the whole figure, then study the whole figure. If you have trouble with stiff and weak poses, then do energetic, quick gesture studies etc.
Directionless studying just for the sake of doing studies is not nearly as effective when it comes to actually learning and memorizing things, although it also has its place for when you are bored, don't know what to draw, you just want to get some mileage or feed your visual library etc.

>>2721458
rather, this was my own correction, looks solid?
>>2721461
...I really don't see it. How so?
>>2721462
If you try to correct a figure by focusing on the sole part of it that looks wrong, you're going to wander endlessly while never getting anywhere.
You need to return from the start with the perspective boxes and lines, do the basic lines representing bones and joints and so on. Here you've just put the leg out of perspective and it doesn't fit the rest of the body either.

I had (and continue to have) lots of trouble with halftones...but i found a good way to make progress.
The plane that recieves the highlight is the plane that is facing directly at the light source (or is directly tangent to the light ray). Any plane not directly facing the light nor facing parallel or away from the light is halftone.
If you think of a core-shadow as a corner between a plane receiving light and a plane not receiving light. Then a highlight is just a corner between two halftones.
I can post a pic that will make sense.
Just understand that halftone does Not mean "leave white." there is a gradation from the core shadow into the highlight and it is lighter than the value of the shadkw

>>2722358
Is that a penis monster?
Get some reference on how lanterns and night scenes work, and paint with flat values to get the main forms before worrying about texture. The fact that you needed to blur the background to try to separate from the monster shows your values alone weren't working when they should be your primary tool.
>>2722364
i didn't do that to separate the two as instead to make it feel like it's in motion really, thanks for crits tho
>>2722369
Hey man, before getting all rendery with the gradations, try going simple first. Your values are messy and a little too similar so it's lacking clarity. Light comes from contrasts. Paint with a select few values, with full opacity. Narrow it down, simplify, getting the major value shapes in. Hope this helps.

>>2722538
Looking at this makes me feel queasy. It's too garish and messy. Colors, details, all those lines, the shapes -- just eugh. Next time try blocking out your shapes and colors better, because honestly you waste your time detailing this.
>>2722576
The lines are all over the place and just frankly don't look thought out. Why do you throw different cliched late 20th c. patterns and shapes into random parts of your drawing? Also your light is inconsistent so the drawing loses any depth that it gets from your individual shading of the eyes and mouth.
>>2722594
spend more time studying, these look rushed. Take the time to really measure and understand why he puts certain shapes in their angle and placement. Also don't forget the feet/hands.
>>2722642
some of your figures are really stiff - that bottom left corner in particular. It's hard to tell what's really going on since you have so many unnecessary lines. Also you should think about overall lighting schemes, adding something like AO with drop shadows and general splitting of layers with shadows will help define the forms and keep these from looking as flat as they look now. Check out how pic related adds real simple shadow shapes with hatching to add to the depth of the drawing. Adding these shapes and hatching instead of more lines will make your work look much cleaner and give it more depth.
>>2721758
Just paint the creases with less contrast to make them seem not as deep?
>>2722683
cool cool thanks for the critic
food for thought
>>2722683
First of all, thank you. Secondly, the next time you plan on critiquing others i advise you don't use the word "your". You're just criticizing the person rather than the artwork itself. I personally don't believe I waste any of my time when I work on my art, nor does anyone else who enjoys drawing, painting, sculpting what ever it may be.
Thirdly. How does it feel to have the same style as every other fucking asian on this planet?

Quit symbol drawing my friend. You need to understand what you're seeing in 3D and translate it in a 2D appealing image. There you're just drawing things like your brain is tryin to tell you what they are instead of what they're really are. Stylization can't work without a strong understanding of fundamentals imo.
>>2722798
Been drawing faces too much so I decided to do something for Inktober and try to emit some graphic novel style. But I don't think I should have tried it because my perspective is obviously lacking, proportions, too. Though, I don't know truly bad I am because I went on hiatus because of school and medical drama for three years.
I feel like this piece is weak, but wanted to do something spooky.

>>2722803
Could you give me the definition of "symbol drawing?" I've read it so much in critiques specifically here but everyone just throws it out like the person being critiqued already knows.
And thanks.
>>2720172
Is this working so far?
>>2722814
Well, the definition stands in the name. Since I'm not a native speaker, I'd tell you to google it to get a more concise definition.
>>2722827
The perspective on the cubeish building could be better and you should vary your lines more, specially on the background. Seems kinda flat from there. You should use more atmospheric perspective.
>>2722827
Gustave Dore in the thumbnail, 95.64% of /ic/ in the full scale.
why would you do this to us anon.
>>2721224
I really like this, it looks very comfy. but the folds from the upper part of the skirt look weird
>>2722683
thanks, I definitely still draw too fast
I end up deleting most of what I draw and only keeping what I like which is a frustrating process

Sniffing his own farts.
Hes so far up his own ass at this point that he things hes good at abstraction

Parts are brilliant parts are just lazy. Reel it in brian.
>>2722932
lmao. there are bits I do enjoy. The eyes are cool. and the lip is oddly rendered so well. its the white tones that are killing it for me lol
>>2722740
>it's too garish and messy
"It" is not you, rather the painting. The only time "your" is used is when giving advice. As in "try...your shapes". If you want to render pieces with poorly thought out compositions, be my guest, however it will waste your time. Also the "pic related" was never implied to be mine, and not only is the file name a 4chan file, but the signature of the artist is in the image.
>>2722741
>assuming that was implied anywhere in the text
2/10 for making me reply
>>2722872
Yeah that is something every artist does I think. Take it easy though, there's no point rushing through a drawing book if you don't take in everything. Try taking some of these figures further than the shapes too, spend some time figuring out how the features and muscles look on top of these forms.
Ruin me
Decided to forgo the beginner thread for this one, sorry if it just bothers people here. Not gonna be posting shitty pages full of lines if that helps.
Any of you guys have experience with pen displays? Through strange occurrences a Cintiq 27QHD has literally fallen into my lap and I'd like to make use of it but I have no talent at all.
I've been doing the fundamental Drawabox exercises on paper for a while now and I'm quite confident with them, but it all goes to shit digitally because the screen is too slippery, or some other reason I can't put my finger on. I can't get confident strokes of any sort in Photoshop. I'm constantly spamming undo and waiting to get lucky on the next one. It's virtually impossible to even do a rough sketch because I don't know exactly where strokes will land.
Peter Han says digital and traditional are just tools that work the same exact way, so what the fuck gives? I'm not sure how far this extends to other digitizers but the shit's driving me insane if anyone has any insight.
>>2720336
>>2720335
Like the other anon suggested, mess around with the hues. You got a gorgeous palette on the lower part of the pic (birds, sky, dress) then the red is a little too red and clashing with the green right next to it. The green shadow and red shadow don't match the rest of the pick very well. Worth with the color wheel to pick a red and green that follows design principles.
>>2722985
OK, first thing, make sure you've calibrated the thing properly and that you didn't get gifted the tablet because it's busted. Still here? OK.
>Peter Han says digital and traditional are just tools that work the same exact way, so what the fuck gives?
Digital is a lot harder to control than traditional, it's just a fact of life. Parallax, lag, lack of tactile feedback, low friction. Digital is great, but its advantages are geared towards finishing pieces. For a beginner doing exercises and studies, paper is the best, keep using it.
BTW you're really lucky, screenless tablets are a LOT harder to get used to.
>>2722999
I have it calibrated, I've kept an eye on the parallax, tried different programs, taken care of it like it's more valuable than my life, etc. I'm guessing it's just an issue with my hands, then?
even disposable markers on whiteboard seem to have more "bite" to them. I've tried a few different art gloves because I'm scared to let my bare skin touch the cintiq (or paper really), and they give some friction but it always seems to be a variable amount depending on the orientation of my hand.
Should I be lifting my hand from the surface altogether and only letting the pen touch down? That would give me some direction in traditional practice at least.

the single redline he needs is savage blood

You wouldn't believe me but I did construct her face, maybe I'm just stupid

Senpai if you don't use that other anon's redline I will throttle you. Even if you don't get it just use the redline. Trust me. It looks leagues better since he actually knows anatomy and how a leg should look in that perspective.
Can i get some crit on my anatomy.
did more to this yesterday. i posted it to reddit with the title "Suge Knight Killed Michael Jackson" and it got 0 upvotes
>>2723029
you seem to get better Firez, keep going. may I ask how long you work on such a painting?
>>2723260
there is none
>>2723360
Only zero? fuck, people are such faggots.
>>2723379
I agree there is no critique to give in regards to anatomy. Its perfect and immaculate in every sense of the word.
>>2723360
well no wonder. Time to start studying for real m8
>>2723393
fuck does that even mean. i draw from life constantly what is this "real study" im missing out on. inb4 "imagination"
>>2722168
picccc
Same guy from Leonard Ugly Americans attempted drawing. I just started using a Huion pen tablet and actually got back to drawing after some good 2 or 3 years of none. I need tips and suggestions. I just made this caricature for a friend of mine, I know it's unrealistic and the colors are all off. That is why I'm posting here. Be terrible, I need advice.
>>2723445
Shit. Sorry for the size.
End my shit
What's wrong with this? it doesn't feel quite right and I cant put my finger on it
warm up figures
>>2723535
rocks are flat. you've started detailing to soon. when you detail too soon the image starts to stagnate.
just scrap it and start over. this is what I call the beginning of a polished turd.
>>2723535
too spooky
what is this?
>>2723581
aw you even included me in that post. that's pleasant.
i did more to this. gotta wait for it to dry before i do anything else.

nice on everything but the face.
Her face makes her look like a doll made for people that hate themselves
>>2722327
Then why the fuck are you posting on /ic/?
You know, Artwork/CRITIQUE!?!
Also, your art reeks of the cal-arts/tumblr/burton meets anime style
>>2723596
It was better before imo.
>>2722750
Makes me think of Beksiński, love the abstract world. Do you have a blog or something?
>>2723595
Dude, I know you're not being mean. But a simple phrase of encouragement can make the difference to anyone. Presumably from people that already went thru this shit. I went from the first one to this (still shit, but thou) just by being answered on what I was doing wrong.
>>2722465
Thanks. Had to start again for the seventh time.
>>2723611
no. but I really want to start one. I just can't come up with a good name for it.
>>2723596
very lazy and uninteresting. i can tell you're uninterested in painting and the only reason you continue to paint is because you cling onto the belief you will become famous for your outsiderish paintings that everyone dislikes.
i don't know why you put zero effort into any of the work. i'm sure you could do so much better if you get away from the whole pacasso/van gogh thing.
>>2723661
>the whole pacasso/van gogh thing.
wtf is the "picasso/van gogh thing"? they were two completely different artists how can i be both of them at once. isn't that a good thing? its almost like its intentional cause it's hard to recreate. why emulate anyone other than the two greatest painters, and if I'm successfully melding the two as you imply it's only a matter of time until im successful.
>>2723661
heres the finished one btw. if you can come up with a crit for this piece other than "stop making art" i'd be happy to hear it.
So I saw this 3d sculpt a guy was working on and redlined it.
How do I stop redlining everything I see? This is starting to become a problem.
And yes left half is shitty has I was tired and didn't want to figure out a better way to stylize the proportions
>>2723713
1. brush stroke is similar to vangoghs
2. the abstract hues and over saturated colors picasso.
>>2723718
this is not finished. you have to dedicate more time to your art. it's disrespectful to your canvas to have that minimal amount of oil on a canvas and call it finished.
>>2720181
blog? also fix the filename
Is the dress tacky? Also general critiques/paintovers are graciously welcome!
>>2723618
when you tear into anything you always try to point out at least one thing that was done good or that you liked. it's far better that way if for no reason than it gives you credibility as someone who isnt just around to fling shit and hate and daddy issues.
>>2723713
You forget that style =/= skill.
tons of people on deviantart mix sonic with anime, but do so horribly.
>>2723029
Good god, how is this still not fixed.
