I am completely lost here. how do you do studies? is color-picking helpful when you start out, or is it useless? it's almost impossible for me to see/get the right colors on my own. will it get any easier when I just keep going? any advice would be appreciated
>>
>>2721484
>is color-picking helpful when you start out, or is it useless?
Try eyeballing the colors first, then color-picker to check.
See how close you're getting, and try to figure out why you're off. And also, which looks better.
Remember that the relationship of the colors in a picture is far more important than the color of any one particular spot.
Also, read some basic color theory while understanding said relationships.

>it's almost impossible for me to see/get the right colors on my own
Then if you are painting from a reference be it life or photo, your task basically to find which swatch on your color chart is closest to area on the reference source. See color in hues, saturation, and value (brightness).

>will it get any easier when I just keep going
Yes. Practice, practice, practice.

How do you lads hold your pencil?

I'm from a shithole where the schools used to beat us, so obviously I was never taught how to properly hold pencils so i just did whatever worked, all my life i've been holding it wrong (I know because people always say 'you hold your pencils really strangely anon' etc) and i'm wondering if maybe it's holding me back? It hurts to draw for more than 15 or so minutes. Though I'm scared I'll lose whatever shitty progress I've already got if I change after all these years.
>>
>>2722115
Usually like this unless I'm drawing small scale / detailing. Good for broad, wide movements... loose and free. It's convenient that I hold a paintbrush in the same manner.

Don't worry about 'losing' your progress. Your work will be shittier while you get used to it but you won't lose your knowledge. It'll take some time to get used to but don't consider it backwards progress.

>>

Well, the windmill looks really misplaced in this environment, what purpose does it fulfill for the image, why is there?
And the train is driving into the distance I assume? Why, the action is already over then?
Where is the excitement in this image.

I gotta say the thumbnail is alright, same with the values although the foreground could be a tad darker. I think you problem is the purpose of the image. Tell a story.

>>2724197
Nice one, the rendering looks solid except the tree in the upper right. Feels like another artist randomly pasted that in. I think you should get rid of the tree, I know you're going for the lady to pick that apple but the birds and the ballon are actually more interesting and also very dominating. Could the girl do something more interesting with the open space in the upper right?
>>
>>2724197
The air balloon should showcase more ambient light throughout...
but I'm affraid it would hurt the composition
One thing I would suggest is dilute the greens from the trees and desaturate/darken the browns. It's unnecessary and distracting.

I can tell your anatomy and drawing skills are not that developed, but the design and some of your choices are pretty interesting.

The orange sphere looks a bit out of place on it, perhaps put some pattern on it, maybe some black design, or a gold inlay would be nice, or maybe some sort of indication that it can open up like the segments of an orange or something? Just a shiny sphere there feels wrong.

Take a better photo of it. It's hard to tell what is a result of bad painting or bad photography. I will say that the uniform looks a bit mushy. That soft edge along his sash is not really working i don't think. Military uniforms like that look best when sharp and clean and looking brand new and crisp, it makes it look professional and well groomed in the same way a well fitted tuxedo might, so you don't want it looking dumpy or old.

Requesting your own style on this, preferrably digital. Critique if you want but I don't aspire to improve, I just draw shit like this for fun occasionally
>>
>>2729764

It's hard to say anything because it's really confusing and fucked up.

Those should be 2 separate drawings. That thing on the left was drawn in different viewer position and not on the same ground plane.

Moreover, disregarding ADDITIONALLY fucked up perspective and proportions in lamp (base too small in regards to head of a lamp) light works also differently on it.

You seem from the upper part to have light source from upper right, but from the base more in a back.

People don't comment on it because it is unclear mindfuck. I guess that you did draw head of a lamp, then at different day rest with base or moved it for convenience and then, on yet another day crammed drawing on the left there.

Don't fucking do that. It's fucking bad.

Also you are lazy for not putting detail/shadows inside head of a lamp.

>how could I make the characters read better ?
To be honest I would have composed it differently and changed the layout of the room. Even just cropping out the left half of hte image would help I think.

Using what you have though I think just controlling contrasts to control the eye.

So:
-the banners on the left grab my attention too much, there is that intense saturated red amplified by the cool blue behind them
-I made the clothing of the beggars white so there is value contrast
-king is blue for colour contrast and gave him a crown for a more interesting shape
-put a subtle vignette with a soft brush and multiply layer to keep less important areas darker
-added some guards
-made those bowls gold so that there is some more colour and material contrast
-made small value adjustments everywhere

You're not looking at your angles at all.
You're completely fucking it up.
I'm seeing you draw an obtuse angle for an acute one.

It's fucked, and you need to stare more at your reference.

work on composition
Angles are dynamic is fuck but it looks cool
To make the characters "read" better is to, first off, direct the attention to the characters.
My eye lost all attention to the characters to in fact going away from it.
Maybe add some guards facing to the King so a few other objects that face towards the the figures,
And like the other people said, lessen some values outside the characters like the flags,
assuming they are the ones to be focused.

Stop jacking off to 3d models and scale and perspective if you want to focus on character.

Dig it. But i would try using a large brush and blocks of value next time. Either that or use an actual pen and piece of paper for that sketchy style. Using normal ps brushes for that make it look very scratchy.

This is why you should never do studies from a fucking photo.

Lens Lens distortion is a very real thing and you aren't learning jack shit about anything other than how to copy a photo.

The artists that use photos for for their "studies" are shit artists. Like noah bradley (his "gf and crew as well), ricksucksadick martini, nudurrrr, ect.

photos are great for references but for studies? Yeah, nah.

>>2733705
the idea is neat, but pretty much nothing else.
>needs better anatomy
>needs better composition
>colors are flat and bland
>lacks detail in key areas
>foreshortening/perspective is off

Pretty sure he's ripping off a Fenghua Zhong painting. Your points are all still pretty valid though I guess.

values are boring but thats just my opinion. it's very well done
>>
>>2733786
Studying photos is fine so long as you don't do it to the exclusion of other things like life painting and master copies, and as long as you are aware of the limitations of photography.

He did seem to have blindly copied a lot of that photos weaknesses, honestly the colours and values are worse than the lens distortion.

I could could rant for a lonngggg time about why photos are bad for studying and the reason artists like kr0n, nadar, and the like do it isn't to improve their "art" or to improve as "artist" but it's a lazy acceptable way way to steal and get attention.

I realllyyy don't want to try to argue this and I'm not saying I'm 100% correct but if artist's like Leyendecker think photos are terrible for improving as an artist then maybe...

I never really did many life studies and I'm aware of the issues I have with my art. I really wish I started doing life studies earlier to avoid the bad habits I picked up.

I mean I agree with you there, but you are cherrypicking examples. Many digital artists who are actually technically skilled have studied photos to learn--Mullins, Jaime, Ruan Jia, Brad Rigney, Min Yum, Algenpfleger etc. In fact I would argue that the majority of pro artists have learned at least in part from photos. Many fine artists and traditional illustrators work from photos too, like Donato Giancola, Mian Situ, Phil Hale. The key is that none of those guys worked exclusively from photos.

Leyendecker is an outdated example. Hell, he was outdated even in his own time. Frankly it's not financially feasible anymore to hire models to pose for everything you do, and even in Leyendecker's time he was pretty much the last artist to continue doing that and could only get away with it because he was a superstar who got better rates than everyone else. Even other big name guys like Rockwell switched to using photos because it wasn't possible to hire models to pose any more. And rates have only gone downhill since then.

See, this is why I don't don't argue this shit online.

I specifically stated, and I quote:
>Photos are great for references but for studies? Yeah, nah.

As well, you CAN learn something from photos but you're going to fuck up the way your mind processes imagery that's going to be a bitch to straighten out later. It's far far far far better to study from life than from photos.
