We get cringe art threads pretty often of modern artists who are shit. I usually find them petty and not that interesting since they're a dime a dozen, but I struck gold the other day when I found the works of Frederick Gokliz (circa 1889).
Can we have a thread about bad / funny art from times gone by? I'll post a few of Gokliz' masterpieces.
Apparently these are from a range between 1894-1889, so
>five years
I've also got a small collection of some classic medieval stuff that I can dump later if anyone's interested.
Also a recent review on Gokliz's work.
>Gokliz's work eschews much representation of life in captivity in favor of remembered and imagined episodes of community life. His drawings depict hunts, meetings, and ceremonies, using perspective in interesting ways to show motion and conflict.

no

it's confirmed
the fine art world is poop because of the art critics
instead of setting a minimum bar of quality which should be raised after each century, they just race into who can drop the standards lower

I like it, it can get pretty silly.

Was looking at some Japanese prints the other day and came across a few pieces of gold from 1836 that made me laugh pretty hard.

>these are all pretty cool imo
I agree actually. They're technically shitty but have a lot of charm and the naivety of them is working in their favour.

The whole series can be seen there. Also worth mentioning that this series is just a throwaway thing he did at the beginning of his career. I don't want people associating that with Kuniyoshi since he's actually an amazing artist and possibly my favourite when it comes to all the ukiyo-e masters. I basically see him as what Frazetta would have done if he was born in ancient Japan...like he's a real master at doing energetic fantasy battle scenes and things.

I actually think this is a pretty cool style. Never really liked the fictional-skeleton rape fetish but the community can make a few good pieces, I guess.
