Having issues asking to be paid.

I did a painting for a lady I worked with a while ago, she had a dog she'd adopted from a rescue I work with and I got to know her and a dog pretty well, I studied that dog a lot and even did a few paintings of her one of which recently sold in a gallery for £180 (minus what the gallery took) when the dog sadly passed away I did a portrait for her of the dog for just the price of the materials (£30)

Trouble is she just came back to me saying her friend saw the painting I did wanted a painting of her dog that had passed and what the price would be. It would be around £120 with about 2-3 months waiting in line.

I feel like an arse charging her friend that kind of money when I only charged her £30 but I really can't just be doing free work. Even my family generally get charged unless it's a gift. this is my living.

How do I state the price without feeling like a twat? What do I do if she turns around and says "But you only charged her £30"?

You're an idiot who can't into business

1.the fuck? 120 bucks seems way to little for a nice oil painting familia. (except when you suck, then its nice cash and good on you)

2.Just tell her the price you want and say, that you made an exception for her because you knew and liked her dog. How is this even a question?

If she asks that question, shes a grade A bitch. Youre not some fucking art dispenser that works at a static price or some shit. Youre just some dude. Some dudes like to give gifts to people they know.

I sometimes do shitty design for my friends because they're my friends and I wanted to. If someone pulls the "They got it free tho/for cheap" card, they're either socially autistic or a manipulative prick.

Be an adult. "I charge X for a painting with Y of wait time and Z conditions. You have right to change initial sketch N times and request M fixes before I charge additionally".

Alternatively "What's your budget?"

You are a one-man firm. Act professionally. That doesn't mean you are a dick, you are just professional, focused etc., sometimes flexible, but a company.

Oh and what about X price? Think about the absolutely lowest you are willing to work for on said project. Lowest, like, you wouldn't ever work for even £1 less, this is your absolute breaking line. And ten ask for this price and 20% more. You can later get back to initial price if they say it is too much.

You just get over it. You've sold paintings. You've had that first awkward cherry-popping moment of selling to a friend of a friend. You've already got a grasp on the difference between a gift and a commission.

Ok, so hypothetically, you run a restaurant. You decide to treat your friend to a fine dining experience at your restaurant, the only stipulation being she pays for your base food costs for the meal. Later on, her friends come in after having heard about how amazing it was. Do you feel bad about telling them the regular menu price? What will you do if they say you only charged your mutual friend for cost?

Don't sweat it. You now have established professional gallery prices. If anything, this gift has doubly served as marketing. Congratulations! Do not ever undersell your galleries to people who aren't your mom or best friend. It cuts them out of the loop and they hate you, and it fucking devalues you in the eyes of rich fucks who buy artworks.

Just tell her the truth - the work you did for the other lady was a gift done at cost for supplies, and that your actual price is £120.
>>
120, nigga you slumming it. You ruining the market for other artists, step up or fucking stop drawing.
