Your values are everywhere, but that may be attributed to not being so polished. I can see you haven't established your light source yet, you might have a hard time rendering the piece because you didn't establish it first. Anyway, awesome anatomy, I love how the pecs attaches to the arms and your piece catches it well I also like the concept a lot. You might want to take a peak at some Anthony Jones pieces, they look so 3d and well formed, I also recommend some Dave Rapoza ninja turtles stuff for reference as to how you can bring your piece to the next level. Good luck.

Tl;dr values

>>2714661
Know what you can do? You can stop the noodling and get up some reference in this bitch to get your painting to the next level.
Seriously anon, look at some images to inform your next moves because up until now all you created is a nice oxymoron, that is it screams "boring" right in my face with a fury.
I think most importantly you should think about the lighting conditions in your image, think about where the scene is set up. Right now it's giving me nothing. Where is she? What mood is this supposed to give off?
By settling on a scene/ lighting condition you can create mood, story and basically inform all your next moves on this painting.
Of course if a blank stare, studio lit model shot is what you are going for, do it, but then look up ref for that and try to really nail it.
Also by looking at related images you might get an idea or strike of inspiration you just wouldn't have gotten by trying to figure it all out on your own. Maybe you really like the way the sunlight interacts with the hair or the detail on the collar of an image you find and that might be just the appeal you are looking for.

If I were you, I'd give him tripod feet for more balance and bigger forearm guns so he doesn't look like an amputee with those heavy shoulders.
Think about the weight distribution and functionality more, this thing would be very immobile (thick waist) and easy to tip over, not really a battle material.

Shadows aren't black, they are blue, black is seldomly seen irl especially in nature. Look into painting atmosphere, color temperature and going outside and painting from real life. Your values are very messy as well. Good luck.

I really want to learn how to paint, but I just don't get it. how do I avoid to make the same mistakes over and over again? how do I put down what I understand in theory? for example, I know that a bright/dark tone can make the surface look plastic, but I don't find the right tones to put next to each other. it is frustrating as hell.

>how do I avoid to make the same mistakes over and over again?

just focus only 1 problem at a time and give yourself some time to figure out what's really going on with the subject.

grandmasters' secret is that they know what's "the end product" should look like in their head. so they are just like a printer. every brush stroke has a purpose when a master paint something. so they see what's really happening when they look at the model in front of them.

to achieve that kind of familiarity they also have some kind of workflow they mostly follow. like they practice the gesture, figure, pose, composition first with charcoal. when they think they observed enough and see how the shapes are then they start painting.

it takes many years of practice and a lot of knowledge. you have to know what you are looking at and be confident. so try to use a workflow and don't rush anything. take your time. never do it half assed. always check if it's the right line in the right place.

good luck, have fun.

The nose and mouth are not placed correctly on the forms of the head, so first correct that. To make it more feminine play up feminine qualities. Usually this means things like big lips and eyes, a small nose, defined eyebrows and eyelashes, a narrow face and chin, a thin neck etc.

If you want epic tree scale keep your shapes well organized and get the drawing and values very accurate, and use know scale elements more effectively. In this case getting the normal sized trees on the ground to be more worked out, getting the mountains to look like full mountains and just boulders, and maybe getting some clouds around and in front of the tree. I've attached a paintign of a giant tree from Mullins which works largely because all those waterfalls and the mist they throw up at the bottom are some carefully handled.

Sorry bud but from a technical standpoint this is beginner tier. Which is what the beginner thread is for. Do you have something specific you'd like critiqued? BUT, really, keep drawing and keep posting here (not here though, in the /beg/ thread.)

Just wondering what you guys think.

People are born with a style. Depending on how much work they put into their art will depict the out come of that style. So no matter how hard you strive to be great, you could turn out to have an impressionistic style that lacks fine art realism because your hand is shaky.

I feel like impressionists are a breed. Do I make sense?

Before I go any further on this doodle hows the anatomy look? I rarely try anything with "dynamic" poses since I always feel like I fuck up the foreshortening of limbs, (that and I always think my dynamic poses end up looking silly), so I need to get more practice on it.

It's supposed to be built like a tall, lanky human with an obviously larger than normal clawed hand and barely larger than normal feet.

That's pretty cool, I really like the blue and white patterned cloth and the overall design (except the bad head looks a bit silly). What references did you use?

In terms of painting it looks really unfinished/sloppy because of the edges. If you painted with a more opaque brush so you don't get the transparent overlaps and soft edges everywhere it would look much more finished and nice.

As an anon however, surely you can tell quite a bit about a poster from the way they write? It's no different with art.
>>
>>2716012
Gender is tough to tell through art. Plenty of men draw in "feminine" styles and plenty of women draw in "masculine" styles. I guess you can usually tell the ballpark age of someone based on subject matter and skill level, but again this isn't really set in stone.

hair doesn't read well, try breaking it up into smaller masses, or leave it as a single form.

Watch out for the legs blending into one another

Draw the feet, they help ground the figure and are very important to the entire image

don't be afraid to throw in darker occlusion shadows

honestly looks pretty good. maybe one thing to keep in mind is to block out shadows not just as they "should" appear, but for graphic intent. a big part of comic books is using light and dark very intentionally as compositional elements.

I would say you're well on your way, just keep practicing and referencing comic book arists you like and you'll get there.

Right now the lighting in your image is not really that clear, like the sky and clouds imply a sunny partly cloudy day, but the landscape doesn't show this.

I tried showing a couple quick ways to approach it, one a sunny day, and the other a grey overcast day.

Direct sunlight is warm so the colours should be shifted from the local colour slightly warmer and more saturated. The shadows on sunny days depend on the materials the the environment, but typically they are cool since the blue sky fills them in with ambient light. There are exceptions though like if there's warm bounce light off the ground.

With overcast days thing are more subtle since the light from the sun is diffused by the entire sky so there's only soft faint shadows and sometimes none at all really. Planes that face the sky will be a little bit brighter though and usually will be slight cooler than planes that are facing down which will be a bit warmer, but it can be somewhat subtle.

My overpaints are quick and shitty to just get the idea across, but if you want to do it properly you should find some good reference that has the colours and lighting situation you want, then apply it to your scene.

The little lines of light you put around the light sources is pretty odd. I think it sort of works on the lamp, but when you do it on the moon as well it really is distracting and flattens the image and makes the moon look like it is on the same plane as the lamp.

I did a little paintover showing a few things. I think having a softer quality to hair is important for it to look like hair. I know Mucha did those hard spaghetti strands but he was a master and is a sort of special case because his design sense made up for the strange way to show hair. In general keep it soft.

Also you are shading hair the wrong way. Basically because of the fact it is made up of tens of thousands of little strands means it reacts to light differently so the highlights go across the forms.

Lastly her neck is bent at an impossible or at least very uncomfortable angle, so to have her peacefully sleeping I moved her body.
>>
>>2716543
Don't use the dodge tool or layer effects or whatever it is that is creating your lights. You are blowing out your values, and can get a more effective lighting if you keep the values under control more.

Can I get a red-line?

I'm guessing it's the placement of the abdominal muscles/crotch.

Also, I haven't studied how drapery works. That should be apparent though.
>>
>>2716596
Don't bother doing these, it's a waste of time.

Study the anatomical forms for the limbs and torso. You're making up too much to learn anything from doing these, and it'll turn into habits that you'll incorporate into other drawings.
>>
>>2716600
Thanks. I'm glad you've noticed my lack of form knowledge. I've been studying from peck's anatomy book.

I mainly do these as a way to find out what I really don't know.

I guess that means it's time to supplement that book with muscle form from other teachers.

All I can say is to study everything about color.
Look at photographs, paintings, real life and try to objectively wee what colors compose the scene. This is just like drawing as an absolute beginner. Your brain simplifies and skims over what you see, but fills in the gaps itself, so you still think you are getting all the information.

You're probably working too much from imagination and if you're working from reference, you are most likely painting what you think is there rather than what truly is there. I recommend watching some Watts videos and trying to replicate his technique. Don't worry, drawing is painting and painting is drawing. You should always have a reference or better yet multiple references when you aren't comfortable. A good method to start is by sketching the subject then mapping out your values. You should watch ctrl paint videos and practice maybe Peter Han's dynamic sketching on pencil and paper to improve your lines. Learn to use masks so that your colors won't bleed out of the lines. Colors are secondary to values and your values are rough. Your brushstrokes are not pleasing to the eye and they do not fit a woman. For rendering I recommend utilizing both hard and soft brushes. Values are the most important part of a painting, to know values you need to learn how to light things, look up introduction to lighting by blender guru on youtube. I recommend learning to paint in grayscale before even thinking about color, some people can pull it off though, but I'd rather add the color later on. Good luck, anon.

>>
>>2716994
I'm not usually a fan of abstract art, but these look really nice and much better than the Pollock wannabes I see in galleries
>>
>>2717006
I'm not very good at saying why I like or don't like abstract stuff, it tends to be largely a gut feeling. But uhm, I don't like your 4th image first row (bamboo) or 3rd image 4th row (rock) because they look to naturalistic and not abstracted enough, so they just look like a bad painting of a boring subject. Some of the other images like the 2nd image in the 2nd row, or the 1st image in the 3rd row looks like you took MS paint and scribbled some lines they took the paint bucket to each section so I don't like them much. Others don't feel all that designed to me, like the colours are not that nice and the shapes and compositions are a bit dull, like the first image in the first row. Something like the first image in the second row could be neat in oil paint if there was some interesting subtle hue or texture variations within each shape, but as a digital thing it look kind of plain and I worry that the green looks sort of like a sickly grey that won't look good in a room.

I don't know how values and edges work
>>
>>2717059
They all work to give priority to something.

Sharp edges draw attention, while soft edges don't.

For values, high contrast draws attention, while low contrast doesn't.

You use these things to make the important parts of an illustration pop more than the unimportant parts.

I recommend doing something with the background, perhaps pushing it to be a lot darker (at the very least). This will help the figures pop more, because they will be contrasted against the background.

Maybe you don't know where to take it because it might not need to be taken much farther, I would keep a lot of it loose and "vignetted" but I do think there needs to be a little bit more rendering probably around his mouth or maybe the shoulder closest to us to give us just a little bit more of a clue of what or who he is. Keeping it vague in other places really will help it because usually tlhings are creepier to us that are harder to see and understand.

Pretty cool man, I couldn't help but doodle on top a bit. I might have made some things worse or changed them just on taste, but whatever, hope you don't mind.

A couple thoughts:
-all those soft edges are completely blown out, and while I get that it's a bit of a popular thing these days and can create some nice atmospheric things, it seems like it is largely coming from a lack of knowledge rather than a stylistic choice. Like to me it looks like wherever you had trouble painting an area you jsut said "I'll just smudge it a bit and it looks artistic now!". Or even worse doing it at random. This can really slow down how fast you learn if you avoid things or hide them in soft edges. The far side of his face is misdrawn on yours but it's all soft and blurred so you didn't notice.
-why is the strongest highlight on the top of his skull? I painted most of his skin fairly matte so that when I put the speculars in his teeth and eyes it really pops and looks shiny and creepy
-the design is a bit boring, so maybe try pushing some things further. I gave my did more of a hunched posture and a turkey giblet sort of neck, and some loose strands of hair plus a generic shitty claw hand (might have been a bad idea on that last one).
-look for ways to add variety, like his cranium is a big boring ball shape, so maybe some stray hairs, some veins, some more planar parts of the skull or something can break it up a bit, same with maybe the folds on his neck can have different sizes and directions slightly. I also added in some of his spine and scapulas on his back, but if you want a more beefy body that's fine too.

Def dont want to turn it into a generic creature design, and it's not supposed to be creepy, more unnerving and offputting. The blown out edges are done completely on purpose, it's not a substitute for knowledge, but maybe i can tone it down a bit. Thanks for the feedback dude, appreciate it.

You need bigger boobs for them to be moving about a lot. I think too the direction/placement of the nipple is pretty important for this.

The problem with painting boobs that are flapping about though is it tends to look just like a bad boob job, so usually it is better to avoid altogether. If you're keen on the idea though I tried my hand at it.

Perspective on the forward leg is way off. Define your horizon, and on a separate layer redraw the whole figure using only boxes and cylinders. Use that as a guide for fixing that leg.

Either that or shoot/find some references, again being mindful of your horizon. You could even build a crude maquette in clay or 3D, but again be mindful of the lens needed and the eyeline.

Notice how the chin and jaw is slimmer on your reference, it is closer to a v shape, but your drawing is closer to a u. I recommend you take this into Photoshop and flip your drawing horizontally and you'll see your mistakes you will especially see how unbalanced your drawing is, it's meatier on one side. Don't sweat it though, it's just a sketch and you can really get away with messing up on creatures, unlike with humans.

Glad I'm not the only one who immediately thought that. Figure out where you want to put your saturated tones, since it pulls focus. I'm not really into framing circle with another circle, and I bet you shouldn't too. It creates horrible force and makes everything unbalanced. But keep working on it, I'll bet it turns out great.
>>
>>2717660
Like this very much and would like to see more of your stuff.

Very Disney.. for better or for worse, I guess. Agree with what the other anons said, it's generic and too tumblr-diverse. The piece as a whole is cool, annoying that your main character is the generic white guy. Claims diversity, but hey, white is in the middle anyway always! Although honestly I couldn't care less, I say this only because your piece says this.

That aside, looking at the art - your main dude looks like that guy from Kingdom Hearts 2. It literally looks like both his design and colors, and green-shirt guy is SO fucking stiff and awkward and that hand looks like it's hidden on purpose. All of the other character got cool poses/gesture, but it seemed like you didn't know what you were doing with the green guy.

Thank you for the feedback.

I think people would respond better to the characters if they knew their purposes, and then the races would make sense too. I live in a very diverse city (San Francisco), and I'm pulling inspiration from people I see every day, not doing this to be some kind of tumblr SJW.

The main dude too, I know looks plain but he has super powers and wears a suit that makes him look more unique. The design of the suit is not done yet, I realize it still has a lot of design and functionality to figure out.

I think it's way too dark. It's just a character standing there and not an illustration, so presumably you want the design to actually be shown, but you hid it all in darkness. Even in an illustration you don't want a dark object on a dark background with no clarity to it at all.

I put a middle grey value as background instead so now we can actually appreciate the design more, which is actually kind of neat. I also added a sword because he looked odd without a weapon. He was off balance before too (you probably didn't notice because of how dark everything was!) so I corrected his stance.

>>
You guys are giving that cartoon character line up a lot of shit.
>>
>>2718351
If it's too generic then it won't appeal to anyone though. Better to focus on what you find interesting and trust that others do too imo, not only will it have better results it will be more fulfilling.
>>
>>2718356
Because it's good. Bad art never gets attention.
>>
>>2718363
I don't think people are hating it because of it's good. It's obviously pretty well drawn. The problem is the subject matter, which is obviously not going to appeal to the people who go on 4chan.
>>
>>2718366
But will it appeal to a animation studio? I assume that's the intention.
>>
>>2718368
Probably not because it's so generic and lacking in personality. There's lots of people who can draw well, so if you want to stand out you need to be able to bring something new to the table, which is exactly the opposite of what he's doing.

Started this piece about 2 weeks ago. Had to take a >1 week break because my computer broke. Now that I look at it I don't think I'm even gonna finish it...

I'm at a skill level where If I'm just doing a simple study, it'll probably look pretty much like what I'm referencing and if I'm doing a simple illustration it'll probably turn out okay. Not great but good enough to get dem likes and good enough to put in my portfolio.

Has anybody else struggled with this shit? It's so fucking frustrating when you can do a simple character with a simple background but when you try to do ANYTHING that's a little more elaborate you eventually fuck up and quit.

Tl;dr. Painting is so fucking hard...

looking good anon! composition wise the focal point is framed pretty decently, however i think you should incorporate some more foreground elements. it looks a little flat right now because you have the figure at the midground and everything else pushed behind it.
its hard to say much in terms of colour at this s tage but the rendering on the balloon is a bit boring, try to have some more hue shifts and maybe some refs so you can render the form better.

Maybe it's because of the clothes etc, but I find the scene would work better if it was in a large room with columns, something like a church-like star planet observatory. Right now it feels a bit claustro, like she's in a closet. (and perspective of the background seems dosgy, maybe it's correct but it doesn't look like it)

colors are pretty nice.

there's a slight difference in dynamism in the piece, if you consider the clothes that just fall down, while some powerful force is sending objects flying.
