If I'm a poor character designer, can I learn the basics of design to get better, or is it something innate to the mind of the artist regardless of art fundamentals?
Is conceptualization the "talent" that people speak about?
If I don't have much of it, but I have plenty of technical skill can I make it as an illustrator?
Design is all about knowing what looks good nowadays.

It's a combination of having a strong visual library, your personal taste and an understanding of the principles of design. No one has the talent to just be good at design.

That's very comforting to hear.

You can improve with other methods, but you need to have an interest in people to build on.
And get over the embarassment to show your knowledge and view on people.
I don't have much of an interest, so you could all be replaced by badly working robots and I probably wouldn't give a shit.
